I came across this today and it really touched me. I look at my post-baby body and often get down on myself for what it's become. I think we're fed images of perfectly air-brushed, liposucked, tummy-tucked Hollywood mommies and feel somewhat inferior because our bodies don't look the way theirs do after giving birth. Well, next time I look in the mirror at my less than perfect belly, I'm going to try to remember this. It doesn't mean I can't strive to be healthier, still, but perhaps I can start to beat myself up less about what I see today.... Continue reading

I've been finding so much inspiration in quotes recently. I'm thinking I'd like to put a framed one in every room... For the living room, a family motto: For the kitchen: Near the computer: For the Master Bedroom: For Jake's Room: For the Play Room: And some other good ones to sprinkle about: Told you I was obsessed ;0) Continue reading

A few tasty morsels from blog land: 1. If you haven't discovered Anna & Kristina's show on the OWN network, you totally should. Each episode they cook a variety of different recipes from one popular cookbook and tell you if the book is worth buying. They're sweet, funny, down-to-earth girls who make cooking look like fun, especially if you do it with friends! 2. To that end, if you're thinking of starting a cooking club (like my Mothers & More group did this month!), here's some great tips. 3. In case you hadn't heard, the move towards sustainable, all-natural, non-toxic... Continue reading

The Royal Wedding fever, that is... I do, a little bit. Not crazy enough to stay up all night or wake up at 4am, kind of fever. But crazy enough to record about 6 hours of coverage of it tomorrow on ABC. When I'll have time to watch that, I'm not sure. But I do recognize it as a part of history, especially when I hear people talk about the spectacle that the Diana/Charles wedding was. And Natalie's at an age where I feel like she can understand a bit of what's going on, and she's pretty excited about seeing... Continue reading

So everyone knows hockey fans are a little crazy. Well, these guys have taken it to a whole new level! They're the Green Men, super fans of the Vancouver Canucks hockey team. They sit right next to the opposing team's penalty box and try to get in the heads of the players. Um, I don't know about you, but I kind of think this WOULD get in my head! I saw them on E:60 last night and I'm pretty sure they're flippin' brilliant! Makes me proud to be a hockey fan! Continue reading

After a crazy busy week and family and fun-filled Easter weekend, I finally find myself with a few spare minutes to blog about my trip to Chicago to see The Oprah Winfrey Show. I just brought my tiny point and shoot camera with me, so I didn't take many pictures. A reminder that I really need to invest in a good quality PAS b/c I'm bummed I didn't make more of an effort. But they don't allow cameras or cell phones in the studios so it's not like I missed a golden opportunity to photograph Oprah herself! *You know I... Continue reading

“First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the FSU logo stain her tender haunches. May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty. When the Crystal Meth is offered, may she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half And stick with Beer. Guide her, protect her when crossing the street, stepping onto boats, swimming in the ocean, swimming in pools, walking near pools, standing on the subway platform, crossing 86th Street, stepping off of boats, using mall restrooms, getting on... Sorry for the absence of a weekly obsession the past two weeks -- it's not that I haven't been obsessing over anything (let's face it, I always am!), but I figured you didn't want to see pictures of my spring cleaning (which is what I was obsessive about last week) or my journey into another round of jury duty (which was the week before). This week's obsession is easy, however. Holiday decor! Specifically, Easter decor. One of my favorite things about having kids is having an excuse to decorate my house for the different holidays. We are not a religious... Continue reading

Yesterday was Natalie's first soccer game. Cold, rainy and windy = not ideal conditions to be outdoors playing soccer, so I stayed home with Jacob while Brian took Natalie to the field. Consequently, I don't have any pictures of her playing this week. But I DO have a few pictures of her in her uniform. Check her out: She looks so grown up! Brian said she was actually pretty good, considering she's never played organized soccer before. And, most importantly, she had a great time even though her teeth were chattering! Here's hoping the weather is better in 2 weeks... Continue reading

Okay, I need your help, blog devotees. As I said yesterday, in less than one week, I'll be taking a seat in one of the most coveted audiences in all of television. Harpo studios, here I come! But, before I go, I'm having a bit of a style crisis. A few weeks ago when I was shopping with some friends, I picked up this dress with the intention of wearing it to the taping: I really love the dress and it's very flattering on me. But it's black. And when I look at the Oprah Show audience, I don't see... Continue reading

So a few weeks ago, I got an email from a good friend asking if I was free on April 20th to go to Chicago to see a taping of The Oprah Winfrey Show. First of all, I thought it was a joke. A heartless and insensitive joke. I mean, seeing a taping of the Oprah Show has been on my bucket list ever since I first found out what a bucket list was! I have been trying to get tickets for YEARS, but have never been able to. With this being her last season, I just figured it wasn't... Continue reading

A few weeks ago, my mom shared some devastating news from a family member in Florida - her 2 year old daughter, Samantha, got out of the house, fell into their family pool and nearly drowned. She was pulled from the water and taken to the hospital where she clung to life for several days. Sadly, her tiny body couldn't hold on any longer and she passed away last week. As a mother and family member, I'm just heartbroken for my cousin, Stefani. There are no words to convey the devastation of losing a child. I just can't imagine a... Continue reading

So, it's been two weeks since we've been off the cleanse. My eating habits have been less than stellar post-cleanse. I think I dived in and had everything I was craving - all at the same time! Pasta, cheese, chicken, cheese, chocolate, sugar, CHEESE. C'mon, Stacy (Modern Family reference alert!). And here's what I've learned... No food tastes better than being healthy feels. End of story. I'm starting to feel the way I did before the cleanse - tired, irritable, constant mildly upset stomach, unmotivated... The difference is, this time I know WHY I feel like that. And I know... Maybe it's just because I have kids. Or maybe because I'm just a kid at heart myself. Just wanted to take a minute to wish my best friend, Kyle, a very Happy 33rd Birthday!!! Kyle and I met in the sixth grade and have been best friends ever since. That's over 20 years! We went to college in different states (me at Michigan State, her at Graceland College in Iowa) and have often lived long distances apart. But our friendship has always survived and she is very much a part of my family. My kids call her Aunt Kyle and they absolutely adore her. Honestly, there is NOTHING like having a friend who you know would absolutely... Continue reading

Confession Time: I'd be lying if I said I found myself full and satisfied all of the time while we were on the cleanse. In fact, some days, I just couldn't get over how un-satiating some of the meals were. I mean a big 'ol salad just does NOT fill you up the way a cheeseburger will. What kept me going was mini meals, or snacks, throughout the day. Sometimes 3 or 4 a day, far more than I snack on my "regular" diet. But I tried to make my snacks relatively healthy and tried to refrain from falling into... Continue reading

One of the things that helped me the most on the cleanse was keeping a few things pre-made and stocked in the fridge. I find that when I don't plan and need to grab something quick, that's when I'm most likely to make unhealthy choices. So this is a practice I plan on continuing now that we're off the cleanse. And it's one that I recommend implementing if you're like me and dial the pizza guy whenever your fridge "looks" empty. So what did I make ahead? These ten things meet the criteria of being delicious, multi-purpose, and keep well... Continue reading

Happy April Fool's Day to all of you who celebrate! I've decided I'm rather lame for never fully embracing this "holiday" and vow that next year will be different. Feel free to share any of your favorite April Fool's pranks that would be especially effective on children. I'm planning to officially join the ranks of all you practical jokesters and get the kids good next year! On to some fantastic finds: 1. Continuing along the pathway to superstardom, my favorite television family is the latest crop of celebrities to appear in a Got Milk? ad campaign! Check out the final... Continue reading

Coming from a meat and potatoes kind of family, the thing that intimidated me the most about starting the cleanse was that I knew that my cooking repertoire included very few things that would pass as "cleanse-friendly". So I headed to the library and checked out every single vegetarian/vegan cookbook they had. Yes, I left with TEN cookbooks (the maximum allowed) on my first trip and came back for the other five at a later date. There were a few I found to be the most helpful, and here they are: Supermarket Vegan by Donna Klein 15 Minute Vegetarian by... Continue reading

So by now, I'm sure all of you who are as big of a fan of Mad Men as I am have heard that we won't be seeing new episodes until 2012. Apparently, the creator, Matthew Weiner, has taken issue with a few things AMC/Lionsgate is asking to change about the show. Namely, AMC is looking to integrate product placement in the series, cut two minutes from the show to give more time for advertisements and eliminate/reduce two regular cast members to save money. I can't imagine AMC takes a "loss" on Mad Men, so basically it sounds like it's... Continue reading

Thank you so much to all of you who have been so supportive about my cleanse "experiment." Really, your words of encouragement kept me going during the cleanse and your kindness since I've completed it have me just beaming with pride. Many of you have commented that you, too, are interested in starting the cleanse in hopes of reaching your own higher level of wellness. So first let me say, "Whoo Hoo!!" Honestly, I gained so much from those 3 short weeks, I just want to shout it from the rooftops. If you're sick and tired of feeling sick and... Continue reading

So here are some shots from my last photo session of the 2010 season... You've seen these adorable kids on here before - they're my good friend, Diane's, kids and I was lucky enough to photograph their family around Christmas last year, just after baby Andy was born. As you can see, he's turned into quite the charmer! And it's hard to believe, but I met Diane when she was pregnant with Joey - time goes so fast... Gotta love toothless grins, whether they're on a little baby or a first-grader! Okay, Diane - next time, you and Gabe need... Continue reading

With the invention of E-readers and iPads and phones that read books aloud TO YOU, sometimes it seems as if the days of actual paper books may be limited. But I, for one, would hate to live in a house devoid of books. In fact, I'd rather there be stacks and stacks of them around me. To me, the number of books in a home speaks to a person's commitment to learning. To education. To expanding their horizons and having an open mind. To that end, nothing tickles my inner bibliophile more than a huge, wall-climbing bookshelf, rich with leather... Continue reading
