I got an email the other day in which the writer had much to say about how the taxpayer and school districts were spending tens of thousands of dollars on halftime shows, thus rendering the band director basically useless. The writer thought the taxpayers were being ripped off-- all that money on a single halftime. So let's talk a little about how bands get their shows. As usual, things are humming along on th school music scene. Tonight is the best night for college halftimes in our area, as you can see the UTEP Marching Miners and the NMSU Aggie Band in the Sun Bowl this evening. High school shows are coming together, and the audition processes in all areas --band, choir, and orchestra, are underway. It will be a busy and somewhat unusual contest season, with a few competing events sure to have and effect on some contests. UIL music contests are finally finished for the year, but there are still many musical events ahead of us. Competitively, many area students will be traveling to the Austin area for the Texas State solo and ensemble contest held on May 24 and 26. Students who received a first division on a class 1 memorized solo or a class 1ensemble in band, choir, orchestra, and piano events at the local UIL contest are eligible to compete at this prestigious event. The school year is starting to wind to a close for both the public schools and the universities, but there are still many musical events in the next several weeks, including one last contest. For the local high school bands the competitive season is over, but there are still a few out-of-town contests and spring concerts to prepare for prior to performing at graduation. More music contests are filling the calendar the next week. The 3-day Del Valle concert band contest started yesterday and will continue today and tomorrow. The contest is being held at the Ysleta School District theater, located in the Ysleta central office at 9600 Sims. This contest is a concert and sight-reading contest, so bands will perform their three concert selections on stage for a panel of three adjudicators, and then adjourn to a separate room to sight-read a selection of music for a second panel of judges. The next three months will see a flurry of school music events as area music groups of all types go through their spring contest seasons. This weekend is offering up four contests for the music fan. The West Texas Colorguard Association is presenting two more guard contests tis weekend. It is the third of four weekends for the area guard groups, which are working towards the championship weekend taking place next week. As could be expected this time of year, there are more seasonal music events taking place this weekend, with two concerts on Sunday and a special brass event happening on Saturday. The event tomorrow is Tuba Christmas. Tuba Christmas concerts have taken place all over the world, with the first occurring back in 1974, so this year marks the 40th anniversary of the event. Marching season is over so it's time for concert season, and there's no time like the present! On Saturday, November 16, the TMEA Middle School All-Region Bands will perform at Coronado High School, starting at 5:00 in the afternoon. The two bands will be under the direction of Barbara Lambrecht and Charlotte Royall. Organizers are Marissa Gamez and Janet Lynch. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Finalist results, in order from 1 to 10 were: Coronado Hanks Onate Eastlake Franklin Del Valle Centennial Montwood Bel Air Mayfield In the class competition, Class AA visual and music to Coronado, music to Hanks Coronado, Hanks, and Franklin were 1,2,3. The Las Cruces Public Schools will livestream Tournament of Bands again this year. The contest will start at 8:00 a.m. November 2; the schedule is on an earlier blog post. Hanks High School and Eastlake High School will represent El Paso at the Texas State Marching Band Contest in San Antonio. Currently Anthony High School is competing in Amarillo in class 2-A and Fort Davis and Van Horn are competing in Odessa in Class 1-A. Results of those contest will be posted when I receive them. The Region UIL Marching Contest was held on Saturday. It yielded some pretty spectacular results for El Paso Bands. Out of 30 entries, 23 of them were rated as "Superior" ( first division) and 7 were rated "Excellent". The contest will take place at the Socorro Athletic Complex. General admission for all spectators is $5.00. The contest is in a prelims/finals format and the top 10 scoring bands from the early round will advance to the evening finals. Seven of the participating bands are 4-A bands who have already advanced to the Area UIL contest to be held October 26 at this same venue. This will be a great warm-up for them! A heads up for band fans-- there are two Thursday night high school games that will provide some great band viewing. Both of these are 5-A games, so it's a pre-game/halftime split. On the westside of town, it's the great rivalry of Franklin and Coronado, played as usual at the Sun Bowl. Franklin is listed as the home team, so expect the Coronado Band to step off at about 6:45, with the Franklin Cougars at halftime.
