Today it rained, yesterday it poured.....Literally the clouds just dropped down on our heads and drenched us with a half inch of rain in five minutes. It hailed too.....We were given a sign....that summer is at it's end. Our black locust trees, latest to bloom in the spring, seem to be earliest to change colors this fall. Their yellow leaves litter our desert home like flower petals in the sand. What else is yellow? Our once glorious gardens, now withered and pecked to death by our free ranging chickens..The eggs however, are divine, though with the cold weather moving in... Continue reading

My friends! We've finally settled down into our new home. It is such a joy and blessing to be where we are. There is such a feeling of peace and connection with nature here. In the mornings I have been enjoying running to the sounds of spring and the sights of our desert habitat. Before I lacked motivation to run, as all it was always so ordinary, jogging down the road. This is so different. The first view I see in the morning as I start my run is this....Incredible! I head through the gate on the side of our... Continue reading

I know..I'm only the bazillionth person in history to utter those words, but I've really been feeling them lately! Maybe it's springtime, and the urgency of planting and cleaning, birthdays coming one after the other, holidays, etc. Whatever it is, the time is fleeting. This week we're moving into our new house, and right now it's all about cleaning and preparing for the move, moving, then cleaning out our old house. We are so excited! Our new home is beautiful, cozy, and nestled in the middle of 15 acres with a gorgeous view. Hosanna's birthday is next Sunday and we... Continue reading

Sara, I am so pleased that you posted pics of your soil block method! My husband just discovered this method, (yes in the Johnny's Seed catalog) a couple weeks ago and he's very excited. Although we've already started this years crops in the plastic pots, we'll be ready for soil blocks next year! I love the picture of you carrying the eggs. Your hard working mama hands are so beautiful. I love Asher's sweater. You must be loving that feeling of accomplishment that has come with it! Blessings, Laura

This weekend the kids and I were blessed to visit some friends a few hours away. Jennifer has been my best friend since we were 12 years old, and her daughter was turning 4 on Saturday. I made her a birthday crown, cape and wand, and it was a lot of fun. Every little girl loves to feel like a princess! Last year my friend made my daughter a beautiful felt crown for her birthday and since then I have been inspired to make 3 crowns. I just love the fact that it's an heirloom quality gift that you can... Continue reading

I'm glad you clarified! I was wondering for a moment who's tummy that was. What a precious angel...Just today I was looking at my 4 year old and remembering the day I gave birth to him and how those years have gone by. It takes my breath away how quickly life passes.. Blessings to you and yours.. XOXO Laura

We had the opportunity to spend a day out with the family and attend a local St. Patrick's Day Celebration last weekend. Many of our friends and family participated by belly dancing in the parade. They were beautifully costumed and I was lucky enough to be able to take pictures of all the fun. Excitedly getting makeup and hair done before the parade... Davis won the "Judges Choice" award and $50 for packing around this cute bundle of joy while he drummed for the dancers.. The girls were so high energy and everyone loved the dancing! This was my sister's... Continue reading

So this has been a slow re-entry into the blogging world. Just when my loyal following is checking my blog often, I go on hiatus for a couple weeks. Well, the good news is, we're all in good heath. ALL of us have had sinus/cold issues and like the cold yucky weather, they are finally GONE. I am SO happy that the weather has warmed up. The kids have been playing outside for hours on end. I love the way the sun warms my skin, I just want to relish in every minute. I don't even want to think that... Continue reading

I am very pleased with your explanation of the no-till method. We have experimented with both the traditional till method and also Ruth Stout's no work gardening method (which is no till, heavy mulch). We have had great success with Ruth's method but the only downside is that straw is quite expensive. I know about using green manure but I thought it was supposed to be tilled into the soil. What a great idea to use it as mulch instead! I have a lovely friend in her 70's who swears by the no till method and is a big fan of Masonobu Fukuoka. (We have "The One Straw Revolution" as well, next step is to read it! lol) She has always stressed the importance of keeping the top soil intact. I hope to do an extensive blog post on her as spring progresses. She is truly amazing! I am very impressed that you and your husband are going all out in the no-till adventure. I pray that this year your farm will be wildly successful! You have inspired to try it out this year as well in our own gardens. Blessings to you and yours.... XOXO Laura

The sweater looks gorgeous! I love that style, and the drawstrings on around the hood and the kanga pocket is definitely my fav. You are such an inspiration as a lovely hardworking mama. Blessings to you and yours... XOXO Laura

Our family is becoming more and more frugal, making changes in many aspects of our life. Food is one of our big expenses, and it's a fun challenge to find ways to cook tasty, healthy meals and treats without breaking the bank. One of my favorite desserts to make has always been chocolate chip cookies. I loved using good quality semi sweet chocolate and loading them up with nuts of all kinds. As our purse strings pulled tighter I would frequently end up putting back that bag of chocolate chips on the shelf with a sigh. I just couldn't justify... Continue reading

I am trying to get in the habit of sharing recipes from my kitchen. People are always asking me,"How do you make that, I've gotta have that recipe, etc.", but I can rarely duplicate anything since ingredients are thrown in on my whim. So here's something new and yummy... I've discovered frittata! My mouth always waters at the thought of quiche but pie crusts aren't my forte so I rarely make them. Frittata is so much easier and doesn't require a crust so of course I've fallen in love. The other big plus is that you can use basically whatever... Continue reading

We've started a new tradition of having a tea party every week, inviting family and friends and sharing good food and of course, tea. My daughter Hosanna is the host, and it's her job to lay out the tablecloth and set the table, invite everyone in cordially as they arrive and of course demonstrate proper etiquette (we're working on the last one). It's something she can count on every week and I love the fact that my great-grandmother's tea set is being put to use instead of collecting dust. Lovely friends, scrumptious food, and great conversation. What sort of weekly/monthly... Continue reading

We've been having lots of snow in our desert habitat lately! Just a few nights ago we had 18 inches in less than 36 hours. I know my east coast friends might rightly be chuckling at that amount, but for us it's a lot! Hosanna's been asking since last winter to go sledding at the Coral Pink Sand Dunes ((remember last fall?) Well we finally made it out there and boy was it worth it! David's checking out Hosanna making the long trek back up the hill to hand over the sled. She wanted every turn to be her own... Continue reading

We have a couple thrift stores around here that I love, some more than others. At this one that benefits the local animal rescue I got a bunch of fun stuff for under $10. Why would anyone want to buy anything new? Wooden knitting needles can be so expensive but I got these for a buck a pair! I also found this brand new matching crocheted washcloth and scrubbie set for $1. I've never seen a scrubbie like that, isn't it clever? Lots of vintage tins for 25 cents a piece. Hope these will help my sewing space become a... Continue reading

Everything looks beautiful! I love seeing familiar books in your home that we enjoy in ours. I have such a soft spot for vintage childrens books, and our collection is growing by the minute. We are in the midst of moving to our new farm house and my mind is still turning over what will go where. I'm so pleased that things are coming together for you. Warmly, Laura

Thank you so much Violet for inspiring me to have a good day today! You are such a beautiful woman and your life is the picture of what I dream that mine can be. I understand all to well your situation with your husband's diagnosis. My brother-in-law passed away 4 years ago from the same cancer. I'm sure you know how serious it is, but he was much like I envision your husband in that he greeted each day with joy and humility. He touched and inspired so many lives while he was here and we are constantly reminded of him and his acts of kindness and example of a hard working person. I am overcome with that same feeling when I read your story here, and I'm sure your attitude and work ethic is representative of your husband's. What a wonderful thing you have done putting together a life story! I would love to read that. Really, I don't know you but you seem like an incredible person and that interests me! God bless you and your family. My prayers go out to you and your loved ones during this time. (And thank you so much Larissa for taking the time to share with us this beautiful woman's story. I have been truly touched today.)

01 - Your Cheatin' Heart ON a very fun note...I was able to do some recording in "The Studio" today. My awesome brother has offered to pay for me to record a full cd of some of my favorite songs. This is such a wonderful opportunity. I recorded a Christmas album this past season in one day, and it felt very rushed, so it's nice to be able to work on just one song, and add different instruments to liven it up. I hope the above link works...This is my first time posting music on the blog so if it... Continue reading

Last night we had a lovely dinner of lasagna, a simple salad, and these delectable marbled brownies. It was a birthday celebration for my amazing mother-in-law, 72 years young today. We're heading into the big city today to go to our biggest annual book sale. We are so excited. There are over 600,000 books at this sale, and people come from all over the country (some even the world!) to sleep in line and be the first ones inside. My hubby will be the one sleeping in line tonight, and me and the kids get to visit with family. You... Continue reading
