Currently I am studying business process improvement at the University of British Columbia as part of the Web intelligence course (totally online course). One of our text books is Jim Collins' Good to Great book (the other is Business Process Change from Paul Harmon). Hereby I would like to share with your my reservations regarding Collins' Hedgehog concept and other theories from the book. Despite of my reservations regarding the theory, I think golf course owners should consider these ideas. Collins says by placing the emphasis on people before strategy, it allows companies to adapt more easily to change. In... Continue reading

We tend to speak about putting as golf's game within the game. The putting stroke is the least complex of all the ways there are to swing a golf club. It requires no special strength, speed, size or artfulness. Unfortunately, many golfers underestimate due to its simplicity, the importance of a good putting. It seems to me that Ping Golf is trying line up to its competitors who have already developed some mobile applications (TaylorMade, Puma Golf). Ping Golf's new mobile application iPING is a free app that runs on iPhone, iPods and also on Samsung Galaxy S III. To... Continue reading

Recurrent excuse why people do not want to play golf is the conservative dress code. The regular answer to the accusation is: we are traditionalists. Somewhere this debate reminds me a previous dispute about the belly putters. It seems to me golf attire in any era reflected the understanding of golf in those days. This is why we want today a more relaxed, easy going golf attire and less formal. Those who support this change can justify it easily. Everyday we are dressed very formally in the office, when we want to have fun it should be lightsome and off-handed.... Continue reading

Hi Seth, Originally the chart is from Groupon. Since I wrote this post, Groupon made some changes on their website. However they left some useful information: https://www.grouponworks.com/why-groupon.

As I wrote in my previous post, average American mobile user is spending cca. 2 hours 38 minutes on his mobile and tablet on daily basis. Americans are spending twice as much time today with desktop media as they do with mobile. If mobile media will keep on growing in the same pace as in 2012 (+51.9% growth vs 2011) then I can imagine the two could reach parity or tablets and mobiles will gain slight advantage. It seems to me, that smartphones became also part of superintendents' everyday life. John Kaminski Ph.D. (Associate Professor, Turfgrass Science at the Penn... Continue reading

Hi Darren, Thank you for your insights. It seems to me that all major players of the golf social media presented his point of view. :-) Yes, Facebook is the determinative social networking platform. At the same time I would argue with your statement that why to socialize as a golfer on the internet ("Golf is already social so do golfers really want to socialize online?"). First of all why not? Life and conversations don't end in the golf course. This why I think social media can have important role to keep up relationship with friends from the golf course/country club beyond the game and at the same time it can also endear those who have some interest in golf. Last but not least, we should bear in mind: social CRM. Clubster.com is an interesting initiative in the US for private clubs. It is like Yammer.com. By the way, I have not met any golf course website that would enable members to organize games on their website (see: KLM's Meet&Seat service: http://www.viralblog.com/social-crm/klms-meet-seat-social-seating-is-live/).

I think this is the first time in my life when I hear about Mother's day in relation with golf. Wilson Staff found a very nice concept to help us to praise and to express our honour to our mothers (or any other special woman in our life). You have to tweet about this lady/mother why is she so special for you. If you want to win you should add to your tweet also this tag: #fgtourtc. If you want to do it on Instagram it is also fine, but don't forget to add there also: #fgtourtc. The lucky winner... Continue reading

I am sure you are familiar with that feeling when you struggled throught the fairway (let's suppose, you have got a good chance to finish the game under par) and you are standing on the green. Suddenly you feel self-confidence. Although many people can think, if the game went well so far then the putting on the green will be child's play. If it would be so, then Dr. Joseph Parent would not write another book about putting: How to make every putt. I was really happy to receive this book's "advanced uncorrected proofs" version yesterday. Thus, I am not... Continue reading

There is a hot debate in these days about golf club dress codes and in general about the style of golf attire. What I see at Ashworth is that they are still designing low-key clothes. As they say "actions should speak louder than clothes". However they should think about how Ashworth can fit to the younger generation's lifestyle. I have to admit, I am not in favour of very lively and flamboyant colors like some of Puma Golf shirts' colors. Although Ashworth tries to bring modern style to his collection, they are still far from being modern in design. In... Continue reading

In June 4 amateur golfers Graeme Dawson, Gary Davidson, Ally Love and Angus Watson set out to complete each of the 189 golf holes (of 11 golf courses; par of 740, playing time of 22) in and around St Andrews including the infamous Old Course, which hosted The Open on 28 occasions. The game will take place on 20th June 2013. The Winner who is able to complete the 189 golf holes within 24 hours will be a World Record breaker for the Most Consecutive Different Holes of Golf Played in a day. The St Andrews 189-Hole Challenge is about... Continue reading

Adidas Golf has good reason to be happy in these days. Since the foundation of the company in 1999, the first part of 2013 was the highest sales period in the life of adidas Golf. According to Golf Datatech, adidas Golf became No.2 footwear family (dollar share, on/off course) in the US. The company holds the same position in the UK with 25.6% market share with the new adizero tour leading the field at nearly 13% alone (source Golf Datatech, dollar share, on/off course). In Japan, adidas Golf leads with a 30% market share and adizero tour ranking third among... Continue reading

So far I have not found reason to write explicitly about Callaway Golf. I "upbraided" Callaway Golf for not exploiting and utilizing social media (e.g. crowdsourcing). Yesterday Callaway Golf launched a social media networking campaign (as a matter of fact a sweepstakes "packed" in LinkedIn: for those who are legally residing and physically located in the US) in partnership with LinkedIn. The campaign is based on two obvious facts. We golfers tend to network during our game to develop our businesses. The other fact is LinkedIn is the largest professional network in the world with 200 million+ registered users. Just... Continue reading

I have just received from Titleist UK an eDM with a weird headline. I found something is strange in the wording of this headline: "loyalty is rewarded". When we say we reward your brand loyalty aren't referring to purchases in the past? How do they know that I am playing with Titleist golf balls? As a matter of fact I am playing with Nassau QX and Nassau Pro Cyber. Entering a pro shop and buying 3 boxes of golf balls it not necessarily means that I am loyalty to a specific brand. It can mean many things like I would... Continue reading

Hi Carolyn, It is a great idea to add golf as a possible interest. Which female friendly hotel has golf facility? Do you mean outdoor facility or indoor facility (e.g. Wii game or other golf simulators)? What do you think about HSBC's report on golf?

In 2009 I started to realize when I talked with my business partners from various industries that there is a dramatic shift toward women as primary influencer in many business situations (tourism, health, car etc.). It isn't a surprise if we know that women are contributing 44% of family income in dual-earning couples in the US. They are also gaining senior leadership positions as well (e.g. Ginni Rometty - President and CEO of IBM, Marissa Meyer - CEO of Yahoo etc.). American women now represent 5 Trillion USD of economic spending. They are an incredible source of business. This was... Continue reading

Are you also excited about the Masters Golf Tournament 2013? Because I am. Now every attention is focusing on what is going on in Augusta National Golf Club. Wilson Staff is not an exception to this. I feel a little be handicapped in the latest promotion of Wilson Staff, because this promotion is only for US citizens. Anyway, if you are able to write a great tweet about your Augusta memory with the hashtag #d100limitededition (quite challenging when the length of a tweet is max. 140 characters) or on their Facebook page with the same hashtag you have great chance... I have been watching people around me for a while how and what they have been using in their mobile. I noticed a trend. As people are getting familiar and comfortable with their smartphones (I hope soon I do not have to use this phrase anymore) they will use more + different mobile applications. Today an average American mobile user is spending cca. 2 hours 38 minutes on his mobile and tablet on daily basis. It is simple and fast. Probably this explains the extent of our addiction to our mobiles and throughout it to mobile solutions and services (e.g.... Continue reading

All started in April 1983 when Joe Catford invented the world's first powered golf trolley out of frustration at having to carry his golf clubs around the golf course. Short after launching it, Tom Watson started to use PowaKaddy in the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. Please forgive me if I do not add comments to PowaKaddy Classic, but in 1983 I was merely 8 years old. 1983 was an interesting and eventful year. I will tell you at the end of this post. Today such design is considered as a vintage golf trolley. Probably this PowaKaddy model run without... Continue reading

Hi Lashbrook Burchfield! Thank you for your compliments.
Hi Whitney! I would recommend KPMG's: https://www.golfbusinesscommunity.com/ and NGCOA's Golf Business magazine: http://golfbusiness.com/ and UK's Golf Club Managers' Association's: http://www.golfclubmanagement.net/. If you need more help, then please feel free to ask or drop me an email: mikibreitner@gmail.com
Hi Brad! It is questionable that Tee it up marketing is the right choice. In my previous comment I wrote: Although I am not convinced that any golf course owner should turn to golf industry specialist digital agency. I am sure you can brief other digital agencies who can come up with nice solutions. However if they think so here are two major golf course specialist digital agencies: - Coursetrends - http://www.coursetrends.com/ - Legendary Marketing - http://lmgmc.com/portfolio/websites/ Both agencies are offering tee time management solutions, but I think it is worth to check out Active Network's solution: http://www.activegolfsolutions.com/.
Hi Duppstadt! I am happy that I could help you. Please let me know which golf social networking you selected..
Oakley and Bubba Watson teamed up for a special project called Bubba's Hover. Bubba's Hover is based on Neoteric Hovercraft's technology solution that enable us to fly smoothly over land or still water by rising above it all on a cushion of air. Although this video (see below) is merely an advertisement for Oakley, it is a good lesson for golf cart manufacturers like Club Car and E-Z-GO. Let's be honest, there are no big differences between current golf carts that are available in the market. I would consider this technology to provide us better experience on golf courses as... Hi Golf Courses! I do not sell golf insurances. I just wanted to highlight the importance of golf insurance. For US golf courses I recommend to read this: http://www.ngcoa.org/pageview.asp?doc=2044. QBE is the preferred golf insurance company of NGCOA. Allen Financial Insurance Group and Travelers are from US, Bradley's Insurance is from Canada. If you are interested in British golf insurance, here is my another post in golf insurance topic: http://golfbusinessmonitor.typepad.com/golf_industry/2012/12/are-we-safe-on-golf-courses.html.
