Good stuff Manny. Way to keep us engaged while we have no bowl game. Any truth to rumors that NCAA ruling will come down in Jan before Feb signing day? Heard that from a buddy in Indy.

I meant beat BC of course, not FSU. My bad...

I'm torn on this one fellas. I thought that repaying the measley amount in impermissible benefits and sitting out the games was punishment enough for this team. I also thought having the 15/16 extra practices with the young guys would be huge for the team. But I also see the point of getting the punishment started now. But if most of the really bad stuff happened with previous coaches and ADs, then why punish this team so much in one season? There was about $4000 in benefits repaid and 40+ games missed across the suspended players. The bowl ban is just over the top. And what if we still get a multi-year ban from NCAA? What have we gained? Just have to wait and see and hope this move was the right decision. But we played some tough teams this year. The landscape of CFB has changed. USF, UVA, KSU, MD and of course FSU all have guys that will play on Sundays--just like our guys. We couldn't say that 15yrs ago about USF, UVA, MD and KSU for the most part. Kids are going anywhere they can play and get a shot at the league. So with no bowl to prep for, the coaches can do more digging on the players we're recruiting. Forget the star systems and go see for yourself. And put in an off season workout sched for the guys coming back. Beat FSU and walk off the field with pride. Hell I'm checking flights now to see if I can make the game. What time is it anyway? Go CANES

Not sure why we did not make offensive adjustments in this game. Quick slants, screen plays and more toss sweeps should have been thrown at a defense that was plugging up the middle and coming hard on delayed blitzes. A hurry up offense would have been nice to see. Would have kept the D guessing at least and maybe put a spark in the game! I do like the way our D stood strong the whole game for maybe the first time this season. Either way, we need the bowl game to get the extra practices for the young guys! Do not self-impose please. Go CANES!

Team did not play scared. They just weren't forceful enough on offense. Plays took to long to be called and too long to snap the ball. I like the speed at which Oregon calls plays and snaps the ball. Keep the pro-style offense but speed it up to throw off the D. Hopefully SM17 is smart enough to make the reads at the line and execute for us next year.

Yes the switching threw us out of rhythm. Use SM17 to throw play action deep or quick slants with his elite arm. FSU scored 1 offensive TD. We scored 3. Without the punt return and our mistakes, the score is still 19-16 UM wins. Golden era I want to believe in you, but I leave each week feeling unsure. Go CANES!

Dumb penalties caused 90% of this loss. Bad playcalling caused the other 10%. But that 10% is what sticks out the most because we were in position to tie the game twice even after the 90% penalty errors! First we got the ball to their 16yd line. We had 3rd and 4 and got maybe 2yds. We previously converted 2 fourth down plays with a short quick pass to TE or WR. This time coach calls a power run which had failed all night! Bad call period. Next we have 29sec and first play takes 11sec to execute for 0yds. Bad call. Simple 10-15yd outs in the middle of field for 1st downs would have taken us to 30yd line with 15sec to go. Spike ball on 1st down then you have 3 viable shots at end zone. Instead caoch keeps calling long routes that kill time. Final play does not even get to end zone so we could have a MSU moment. In all of our loses one thing has seemed constant to me. We continue to be outcoached and out-schemed by the opposing team. UVA just lost at home to NC State last Saturday! How do we let them beat us. And that is what they did for sure. They beat us. We did not lose. They came here to win and they did. They executed to perfection and they out-schemed us again. I know it's easy to point at penalties and players, but when you still have a chance to tie or maybe win after all that and you don't get it done because of very bad playcalling in very critical situations; you have to point the finger at coaching: AGAIN! Go CANES!

Some of the comments are killing me. First, it was a good win against a team that came into the game 5-1, runs the ball well and has a strong D. Next, The Canes should immediately find another stadium to play games after the BS pulled by the Dolphins today. I'm happy as hell they got beat and it was fitting that a former Hurricane did it to the fish! Most NFL teams have 2-3 former Canes making impact plays. But the fish have only one--Vernon Carey. They have a college team that has put more star players in the NFL over the past 20yrs than any other school. Yet the fish do not select former Canes??? To hell with the dolphins. Finally, I wish Itcdolphin and other J12 haters would just lay off the young man. He's doing what we need and NOT costing us any games! And enough with the Randy Shannon bashing already--canesjunkie. RS beat the GT triple option twice including a road win. And to doubtingthomas telling us to be worried about a "strong" UVA team; you mean the same one that lost to an NC State team that was 1-5??? The Canes will win and win big on ESPN Thursday night. Just need the coaches to establish the run first then we can air it out. Let the O-line build their confidence by taking the first series and pounding the ball through the tackles. GO CANES!

Solid game and great win for the Canes. Happy about the way this D played. Nice coaching and preparation by the DC. He's off the hot seat with me for now :)

Wow! I remember when Coach RS called out TB and blames the OSU interceptions on him. The fan base went crazy and said RS was doing a terrible thing. No one said, "coach knows best." Everyone killed him on this blog. I like coach calling out players to get them to improve, but Coach Al picked the wrong player in this case and I hope it doesn't negatively affect the team. Go CANES!

Agree with you on GT struggling against UVA defense. We have the stronger unit for sure but what I noticed in that game was the aggressiveness of the VA defense. There was no waiting for the play to come to them. Each lineman and LB had an assignment and they all went to the gaps and stayed there to cut off any cutback runs. This will be key for us. And I know coach will use some of that tape for our guys. And starting hot on offense will help too as GT's offense is not setup to come from behind. They had a better more veteran offensive line and running back last year and we still shut them down.

Sammy Watkins is a beast! Glad we don't see him in the regular season. Maybe in the ACC champ game if we get there, but the kid is for real. Looks like Julio Jones now and he's only a freshman. Went to South Ft Myers HS. Wish he could have come here but best of luck to him at Clemson. And that's what I like about Coach Al when he talks about getting the right 20-25 recruits. Not everyone is meant to come to The U and its not because they aren't diehard Canes. There are some kids in south FL that need to get away from here in order to have a chance to make something better for themselves and families. Sometimes you have to get away from the idiot friends that are heading nowhere fast. So although a kid may have the talent and heart to be at The U, we don't need him here if his cronies are going to negatively impact his ability to perform and succeed here. There are few kids on this team that show signs of having the wrong folks around them and in their heads. Coach needs to watch carefully for that in his future recruiting classes and I'm sure he will. Go CANES!

Forgot about that big hit that TB took. Good point about heart and coming back strong after that one. Its amazing what's happening with the WRs now that this coaching staff is truly practicing what they preach about putting the best players in the game. Byrd can no longer see the field now that the other guys are being rewarded for the hard work they're putting in at practice! And that's what I do like about this staff. But some of the gameday play calling has got to get better. C'mon Wake! Need that win over VT.
You're right Eudo, but those scenarios are falling into place right now. We beat GT next week and that gives them 2 losses and they still have to play Clemson. VT loses to Wake tonight and that gives them 2 losses and they still have to play at GT. So all we need to do is take care of every conference game in front of us and we play in the title game! VT will end up with 2 or 3 losses and same for GT. We win in those very likely scenarios.

And Wake is up 10-0 on VT. This thing could be lining up nicely for us.

Folks, UVA just knocked off GT 24-21!!! That's big for us if we can take care of business next week. GT only scored 14pts on offense. They had a pick 6 that gave them the 3rd and final TD. But VA moved the ball with ease! Things are really looking up if we can start each game fast and finish strong, not like we did today. D looked a little better today but something is wrong when teams keep picking up 3rd and 14 or more! But I did see more stunts and blitzes and penetration so I'm glad to see the DC making some adjustments. Stay focused team and do it to GT again!!! Go CANES.

Folks, I was looking at the VT schedule ahead and we actually still have a chance to rep the Coastal div in the title game. VT plays at Wake this Sat and they also play at GT in a few weeks. If they lose those 2 games they will have 3 conf losses. We need to win the remaining 6 conference games and all of them are winnable. We finish 6-2, GT hopefully finishes 6-2 (one of those losses to us, the other to Clemson) and VT finishes 5-3. We win all tie-breakers in this scenario. I'm sure the coaches are walking them through something similar but it's all for not if we don't step up on D this weekend! Go CANES!

Anthony is spot on with many of his comments. There is nothing I read in Coach D's comments that filled me with confidence. We all know where the weaknesses are on defense but the key to winning on D is NOT to play passive ass football. Be aggressive and if you get burnt, so be it. We have the offense to keep up with any team we face the rest of the season. Bump and run with over the top satefy help is what we have always played at the U and this coach needs to figure that out ASAP. Do not make excuses about not being able to run the full package. Hell, that may be part of the problem here; a system that's too complicated! The formula is simple. Rush the 4 linemen but have them use stunts with a LB or safety coming on a blitz. Have the corners man up and force the receiver to the boundary. Only the middle will be open and if the QB has time he hits a TE or checkdown to the RB. That's when the other LB and safety must come up to make a play. But if the QB has all day to make reads and throw 5-7yd outs, then our D stays on the field too long and we get scored on anyway! So in a nutshell Coach D, we'd rather you be aggressive and we lose than play our ass off on offense and lose because of your passive, protect the corners defense. If you don't want players making excuses then you can't make excuses. If want them to make a play, put them in a position to make a play. How the hell can any corner, experienced or rookie have any chance to make a play on a ball when he's 7yds of the line of scrimmage? How can any LB make a play when he's falling back off the line of scrimmage at the snap of the ball rather than filling the A gap? I'm not calling for Coach's headset but it needs to get rattled a bit by the head man! Need to see some differences this weekend! Go Canes!

So please tell us the reason he didn't send the LBs or Safeties? If he saw that no pressure was being applied by the front 4, then what the hell is plan B? Just get beat down the field with a bunch of 5-7yd passes? C'mon man. I'm sure he's got more upstairs than that. So why no adjustments? Why no rush or blitz? Please tell me how you're going to defend that lack of coaching adjustment in now the 5th game of the season. We got UNC next week and GT after that. Neither of those teams have a Travis Benjamin or Tommy Streeter that can burn our corners on every play. So what will D'O do to stop the run? Be aggressive or go coach defense at Wake or Duke where they have to protect corners due to lack op talent. We have the damn talent, just put them in the right system!

Eudocimus... I totally disagree with you on the point about CBs not being able to cover. I'm not overly impressed with our CBs but I don't see where they're getting beat for deep plays every week. McGhee got beat after cramping badly in the MD game. The other long pass we've been beat on occured when the safety was out of position. Outside of that, where are we getting torched by WRs to the point we have to layoff 5-7yds every play? I never said the DC was clueless. I just don't believe in what he's doing and the scheme he's running. And if the key is to not get beat with the big play, then what is the D supposed to do to keep the other team from scoring? We're supposed to turn it up in the redzone, but we have not brought pressure there either! So why keep the D on the field for 8-10 play drives which tire them out even more? Champs all that matter...watch the name calling my man. No idiots over here. Just longtime Canes fan that's tired of seeing our team work too hard to come up empty because some DC is trying to "prove" that his system can work. Create schemes based on the talent you have rather than trying to force a "system" where it doesn't fit. Again, we have the speed at corner, we have speed at the D-end slot. We are weak in the middle. So play the damn cover two, let the corners force the WRs to the boundary and the safeties cover the middle. Send one or two LBs up the middle to stop the run in the backfield or sack or disrupt the QB on pass plays. I'm not sure why its so hard to call the coaches out by some of you guys. Just because you criticize does not mean you want them fired. I'm just saying for a guy that came to the interview with a 300pg notebook on how to run the program, I'd expect him to make these changes by now. BTW...I always supported Golden making J12 the QB while some of you because of your hate for Jacory criticized Al for that decision. The real criticism has been play calling in critical game situations. That's what I see as needing improvement!
Folks,Golden is doing a great job recruiting and running the program. But we have to be honest and call him out on HIS defensive coordinator! We cannot allow teams to dink and dunk their way down the field each series. We have to pressure the QB at the point of attack. In Golden's initial press conference he talked about the great tradition of Miami and the defense. He said we are the best brand in CFB. We built that brand by punishing teams. And don't give me that crap about not having the talent. Look at the hits we put on guys during special teams plays. And look at the hits we delivered on those few plays where we did attack instead of sit back. We have the speed at corner to stay with any receiver in the country. We have the speed at D-line to pursue any sweep plays. We are lacking some size and depth on the D-line, but so is Boise State, VT, GT and damn near every other program in the country except LSU and Bama. So those other programs are making up for that lack of size and depth with blitzing schemes. We gashed VT's d-line on the run, but they did not just sit back on pass plays. They came at Jacory damn near every play. Sometimes we picked up the blitz, sometimes J12 got rid of the ball in time and sometimes he was sacked or he ran. Bottom line is their DC did something to disrupt our QB. Why aren't we doing the same? Make all the excuses you want, but that's on coaching. And it's on Golden to get it right. BTW...RS never started 2-3. And the D was never consistently gashed 5 games in a row! I want to believe in Coach Al, but I need him to bring some fire to HIS DC. Go CANES!

I'm amazed at how some fans are giving this coaching staff a pass. I'm die hard Canes like most of you guys and kudos to the folks that are keeping it real about this staff. I see a lot of great things from this staff except for gameday decision-making. 3 losses are squarely on the coaches. Plain and simple, the DC's scheme is NOT working! These guys play their best when they're attacking the ball. Stop dropping back and being so passive. That's all I'm wanting to see from the defense coordinator. There's nothing to protect. Our guys have the speed to keep up with any receiver. Go back to the cover two we played in years past and let the front seven attack the damn ball. It's taking too long for this staff to make adjustments. Golden as CEO has to make the right adjustments with his DC behind closed doors. Say what you have to in public, but get on his ass in your next private meeting. Let's hope he makes those corrections on D like we've been seeing on offense. Beat UNC. Go CANES!

I've always heard that when a team loses by less than 7pts, it falls on the coaches. We have 3 losses by less than 7 (late MD pick 6 is the exception). And this is another one I put squarely on coaching and play calling. Opening series we made bad play calls from the 11yd line. Fake FG was suspect but I don't consider that the worst of the play call from this staff. Last VT possession and our last series are the clearest examples of piss poor play calling from this staff (again)! No blitz or pressure or stunt or fake blitz or anything to shake up the QB. On the last play where QB scores, we have no safety or LB containing the middle (again)! But the coaches could have redeemed themselves on our last series with 47secs left. VT has a 3-man front and instead of running the ball or throwing quick 5yd outs, our genius coaches call deep routes where their 3-man front eventually got pressure on J12. Lamar would have been good for at least 10-12yds per carry. That's 30 of the 40yds we needed for a FG. And with timeouts we could have dialed up a play action pass. So once again the players do the best they can with the scheme created by their coaches. And the net result is an unforced loss. VT did not beat us. We lost the game to VT. We gave the game to VT. Hope we get it right for UNC. Go CANES!

TonyCane, SteveB & Championships... You guys are killing me with the excuses and typical of what I posted earlier. The jury is still out on Coach Al my friends. Steve B...his only mistake is sticking with J12? Well that's a major fricking mistake don't you think? And I like J12. But he has not delivered for our team. He's the head man and he should make the call on Morris. TonyCane...Miami simply does not have the talent? Did you post last year about how much talent we have and how we could do much better with a coaching change? We got our change but we have not seen the results against teams we should have defeated. And we will get nowhere near the SMU sanctions. Maybe even lighter than USC as there is no physical proof like the bagman and Reggie Bush. So easy on that timeline. Champs...agree with you for the most part. Lots of teams get to play some cupcakes to build confidence by winning big. Unfortunately, we don't have that option! We only have BCC, BC and Duke as remaining lightweights on the schedule. So lots of growing up and toughness has to come over the 3 game stretch of VT, UNC and GT. 3 wins and we're on to something strong regardless of the sanctions. In Al we trust??? I hope so!

Ed Pope is spot on when he says we fired Shannon for this! Yes we expect immediate improvement, not a nat'l champ but definitely improvement. And where was the improvement on D? And where was the improvement in play-calling? And where was the improvement in preparation for a mobile, option QB? There's no free agency folks, we can't go grab some D-linemen off the waiver wire. And the Golden fans / Shannon haters can't have it both ways. These are the folks that said we have so much talent, if only they were better coached. If only they were better prepared we could win 10+ games a year. Now that we have the new coach, these same folks are saying we're stuck with Shannon's poor recruits. Now all of a sudden there's no talent for Coach Al. BS folks, pure BS. Reality is that through 3 games so far I am not seeing a better gameday coaching product on the field. Don't misread me here. I see a much better manager and representative for the program as a whole, but that has not yet shown itself on gameday. I'm just hoping we don't have another Butch Davis on our hands. Great recruiter, great face for the program, but piss poor on most gamedays. Players look to be in better shape and that's a good thing. There is better rapport with local HS coaches and that bodes well for recruiting. But playcalling is still suspect. Penalties are still killing drives and defensive preparation is still lacking especially against the run. In those 3 areas, there is no difference from what we saw under RS. And that's where Pope was spot on. But after watching VT,UNC,FSU and GTech; none of them are world beaters. We can win all of those games if we get better gameday production from our players, but much more so from our coaches. Go CANES!
