Smaller businesses are the key to driving Europe’s economic agenda. To catch their competitive edge, smaller businesses have to understand and leverage their talent strengths. They operate with lean and less sophisticated HR systems and carry specific talent risks, e.g. lack of critical mass for in-depth talent approach, limited role and compensation flexibility. On the other hand they offer entrepreneurship and talent opportunities and a strong people/owner culture base. EAPM will start a survey to make an inventory of smaller businesses views on talent, share successful practices and offer pragmatic advice on how to create business impact. The ‘green light’... I do not dream about giant innovations. For me it's about small changes in everyday work. Creating a culture where everyone wants to improve and develop rather than to manage "as it has always been" is my challenge. I face the challenge with humor and encouragement. Clear objectives with regular reconciliation meetings also create a climate of success. Success breeds success! Today's managers face great demands. A militant leadership style such as giving orders without justification is out. A good leader is good at reading and interpreting different types of human beings. Managers with clear views create a healthier workplace... Continue reading

Continue reading

How to break the performance barrier The performance barrier should be broken, but don’t let it mean everything: "Too many people are chasing an illusion that we call the future. It will never come. Then we die." (Quote from the book "The Three Laws of Performance" by Steve Zaffron & Dave Logan) Performance is what matters. Which companies have not added an extra gear to increase performance without increasing costs, it’s in time. The performance is also clarified and measurable in order to lay the foundation for career development in the long-term and wage trends in the short term. "Customer... Continue reading

„In 2009 HRM has faced various forms of optimization: the importance of the personnel cost reduction has substantially increased alongside with the decrease of staff and wages. All forms of HR management functions have been also optimized. This year the optimization of the costs continues in many organizations. Speaking about the main activities of the Latvian Association of Personnel management (LAPM), at the moment this association organizes the annual HRM conference – HRM... Continue reading

Thought-through training makes the difference between the best and the mediocre The Czech chess champion Réti once played 29 simultaneous chess games. Afterwards, he forgot his briefcase and complained of poor memory. Quoted from the book "Talent is overrated" written by Geoff Colvin. It is an interesting theme to try to see what separates the best from the mediocre. The book also concludes that the once who’s getting the Nobel Prize gets it at an increasingly higher age. Not because they live longer, but because it takes longer to master the subject and do something that is rewarded. My personal... Continue reading

With great pleasure I have supported the organization of an ambitious conference of HR-students at Tilburg University on the theme of strategic Talent Management. By Even Bolstad, Managing Director, HR Norge www.hrnorge.no Norway has a very low unemployment rate. The participation rate in working life is high, where women are mobilized almost at the same level as men. The flip side of the coin for Norway’s sake, is a very high number of disabled as well as a high absence rate due sickness. For several years, there has been a strong tri-partial effort under the label “inclusive working life” with focus on sickness absence, senior workers and disabled. The results of this “soft” and company-oriented approach have so far been disappointing. High absence/disability rate... Continue reading

Defend the company brand in turbulent times One could never afford to drop ones company brand – not even in times of recession. It’s groundbreaking for future recruitments, and also contributes to the productivity and efficiency. The employees are the strongest ambassadors’ the company’s got. It’s never as important to hold the flag up high as when a company has to give notice or dismiss personnel. Defend the company values, the company philosophy, and the fuel for the motivation and for the engagement the most when it’s turbulent! We, the human beings don’t really need much to create the feeling... Continue reading
