David Pickering walking the recently dropped Goulburn searching for rising fish The fishing has been pretty good the past few days, at least it has been for those that realised that the fish are mostly sitting mid-stream. While the usual methods have resulted in some nice fish being caught, it has been the hardcore, led by GVFFC head guide David Pickering that have had the most success on the Goulburn of late. Scratching through his long list of ‘things to do when the Goulburn is being a bitch’ he eventually found the fish sitting in the middle of the river... Continue reading

A great week of weather is forecast for this week and will coincide with a falling river level as releases of water from Lake Eildon are reduced. We have accommodation and guides available the next 4-5 days for those looking for somewhere to stay or some assistance with their fishing. That aside this is a great week to sneak a day away and fish on your own. You never know how long the fine weather will last into May and forecasts like this one should not be ignored. Get out for a fish if you can. Antony PS- Details of... Continue reading

It was just the other day when listening to a customer speaking of the current 'high water levels' that Werner and I both said at the same time that 3000 MLD isn’t high. It was then that we realised that we are just so used to the higher water flows that 3000MLD is seen as a low river! I never would have thought it would be that easy to condition us to have this response. I guess having large releases of water right through spring, summer and most of autumn during one season is enough to affect how we perceive... Continue reading

The fishing on the Goulburn has been a bit hit and miss the past few days despite the drop in water levels. While there is little doubt that the fishing has improved markedly (some exceptional captures like 4 x 2.5lb fish in one short evening rise session) and that the hatches are much stronger, the fishing has yet to fully switch on. I say this based on the experience of the past few days drift boats trips. Perfect river level, strong hatch and only the odd riser to be found until that last 15 minutes of daylight. Reports filtering in... Continue reading

The Goulburn river below Lake Eildon is set to drop in the coming days according to the latest update on Goulburn Murray Water's website. This is welcomed news to all who enjoy Autumn fishing in the Goulburn Valley around Thornton. The fishing in recent weeks has been patchy due to the high water releases that have restricted daytime hatches of aquatic insects. Fortunately this is about to end with perfect levels for drift boat fishing and hatches predicted for the coming days; and its only going to continue drop in level from here on in. Evenings have seen huge hatches... Continue reading

Hi Glenn, I totally agree with you. We have altered the natural landscape in this country to such an extent that someone from a century ago wouldn't recognise it. Catch and release is the one thing allowing many of our more fragile fisheries to survive and it would appear that Fisheries managers are unable or unwilling to make the changes that are so necessary to improve things. The damage we have wrought on this continent in not much more than 200 years, is incredibly difficult to comprehend. Farming practices that belong in a different climate and century still blot the landscape, sustained only by the damming of every river of any size. Anachronistic irrigation methods that see upwards of 90% of the water released from the dams lost. Flood mitigation practices (capturing water in lakes) restricting the spring floods necessary for successful native fish spawning. This is not even touching on de-snagging, salination, carp etc We have really screwed the pooch when it comes to the natural environment in this country. Without kicking the living shit our of Fisheries and the various people we often point fingers at, perhaps the best thing in terms of the direction we as fisherman are now headed, is that a younger generation are starting to make their presence felt. Most of these younger trout fisherman support the efforts of those seeking to repair and improve our native fisheries. The same is happening on the other side of the fence with more and more of the younger native fisherman coming to the same conclusion; that together we have a much stronger chance of improving things for all anglers. Too often in the past we have been fixated on the smaller issues that divide us, instead of focussing on the larger issues that unite us. While this doesn't do much to fix things right now, there does seem to be a growing solidarity amongst the guys who fish for natives and those who fish for trout. If I can give you one positive thing to take from our discussion; it’s that the next generation aren't as dogmatic as the generations that preceded them were. Thanks for the comment. Catch and release is no cure all for incompetent management but it is all that we have for the moment. I am quietly optimistic that we will see some tangible improvements in the years to come. Cheers Antony

The fish in the Goulburn were much more settled today. As a result we all saw fish on the fin in backwaters as well as rising in the stronger bubble lines. There were also plenty of caddis coming off throughout the day with a massive spinner fall at about 4.30 pm and a trickle of early kossies from about 5pm on. But tonight it was all about the late show; the kossies. A very large hatch of them came off once the sun was well and truly down and we fished to them with two oversize patterns used as a... Funny old conditions up here today with guides suffering vertigo type symptoms as a direct result of seeing 7,500 Million Litres Per Day coming down the river in April! WTF GMW FFS GYST. For those not up to speed with web acronyms I may still look like a decent chap whose spell check has gone mad. Other more web savvy readers should take into account my 'diminished capacity' before sentencing as I have something known as 'battered guides syndrome' as a result many years of abuse by GMW. In all seriousness though this is nothing we haven't experienced many times... Continue reading

We had a great caddis hatch today that started mid-morning and went on until about 3pm. Only the smaller fish rose to the adults with the larger guys taking the pupa throughout the afternoon. There were a few duns about but we never got to see the spinner fall as we were off the water about 5pm. I think tomorrow night and Sunday (plus Wednesday) night could see fabulous spinner falls given the steady trickle of duns over the past couple of days and a big evening emergence of mayfly. Even better we have a couple of bright, warm days... Continue reading

The fishing has been pretty good this morning and I am kicking myself that we have had to knock back a lot of work in the coming days due to not having enough guides to meet the demand. Sorry to those that wanted a float or wade session either tomorrow or Friday but we are flat out with travelling fly fishers and those taking advantage of our father & son school holiday specials. We do have guides available over the coming weekend but the accommodation is not free again until Sunday 14th April. The fishing in the smaller streams has... Continue reading

It has been a pretty typical Easter. Manic at times. Quiet at others. The roads, towns, supermarkets and caravan parks are the stuff of nightmares. But the rivers have been ok. The key has been picking some water that is not being camped on by using assistance from us and by the evidence of your eyes. Driving about and checking the access points for cars is the main thing to do. To give you some idea I did an evening drift last night and leaving our place at 5pm there were about 35 people fishing in the 500 metres from... Continue reading

Hey rob, Glad that you liked it. Me being me, with the undiagnosed OCD, I am continually tinkering and have tried perhaps 20 packs. The Camelbak has been the stand out amongst illustrious competition. The beauty is that it falls in the mid-price point for high end military day packs. drop by when you are next about as I have improved on the lanyard in terms of securing the magnets and the overall look. Half an hour of adjustments and it will be much more robust. Let me know if you are coming up and want to see mine/possibly have me alter yours. There won't be any charge of course as I just want you to have the best set up. Cheers Antony

From 8000 to 6000 last week. From 6000 to 4000 Yesterday. From 4000 to 3000 today. Unfortunately the half day drift I did yesterday was coming off the water just as the hatch started. Plenty of caddis coming off and quite a few duns. Today should be superb with my float set to start at noon and another one at the same time tomorrow. There should be a lot of fish up on the surface with this drop in river levels. The smaller rivers are also in great nick with plenty of options around. I won't mention which ones though... Hi guys, I am just sharing some pics of my most recent lanyard build before it heads out the door en route to an eager client this morning. Most of you that have followed this blog will be aware of my search over the years for the best vest/pack combination. I have played with every conceivable piece of equipment and come up with umpteen versions but this most recent one, the one I have been using almost without change these past two years, is the best that I have yet found. The main idea behind this is to be self... Continue reading

.....but there is some respite on the way. This coming weekend's weather will provide both us, and the fish we love, with a well deserved break from the intense end to summer that we are currently experiencing. This can't come soon enough for some of our guides, especially those just back from New Zealand and struggling to even get a good night's sleep. Lucky climate change isn't real or one would start to panic about what the future has in store for us as a species! ;-) The Goulburn is at a terrific level for edgewater sight fishing and the... Included below are a dozen or so pics from my recent two week stop-gap visit to NZ. I deliberately chose images that were different to the usual grip and grin shots, that as guides we have to take. While liimited to a small compact camera when guiding, you can still get some interesting angles and get creative with framing. Hope you like these shots that I fired off while guiding in NZ this past fortnight. Cheers Antony Continue reading

There are now only 8 spots remaining for next summer's trips to NZ. The dates can be found below and more information can be sourced here . We would ask that you take the time to read the information on the aforementioned page if you have even the slightest interest in joining us in 2014, as the spots won't last long. We offer a unique service under the banner of our New Zealand trips. They are extremely good value and offer a level of service that is rare in this day and age. To put it bluntly I know of...
