This is why I love blogging about cakes. Cake decorators are amazing artists who constantly keep coming up with astonishing new ways to decorate cakes. Since I began Between the Pages, I’ve looked a photos of thousand and thousands of cakes. It doesn’t get old because every time I turn around I find a cake like this. This Ratatouille cake by Dolce Dita is breathtakingly beautiful and pushes the envelop on cake design. The translucent chef’s hat (a toque blanche) with Remy inside it blows my mind. This is one of the coolest uses of wafer paper that I’ve seen.... Continue reading

This is without a doubt the prettiest minion cake I’ve seen. Minions are cute, silly, and funny. I never would have thought to make a minion bridal shower cake. This gorgeous cake was made by Sweet Little Morsels. The cake features a pretty girl minion with wavy dark hair. Minions don’t usually have lips, but this girl minion has pink lips. The band which holds on her goggles is white like her wedding dress. She is wearing a white sleeveless and strapless wedding gown. The gown has a fine pattern on it. She is wearing white gloves and a bracelet.... Continue reading

These terrific superhero cupcakes were made by Cute Little Cupcakes. The characters featured on these cupcakes are: The Flash – This is the chest emblem on the Flash’s costume. Batman – This is the Bat-Signal or the chest emblem for Batman. The Hulk – I had to ask Heidi which superhero this was. I saw it as black with a green target on it and guessed Green Arrow. I totally missed that it was the symbol for radiation. Martian Manhunter – I love the fact that J'onn is included in this set of cupcakes. Even though he was in the... Continue reading

This Avengers Cake was made by With Love and Confection. The bottom layer is covered in a wall of gray bricks. Bricks are flying through the air as Hulk’s green fist has smashed through the gray wall. Individual bricks are attached to single thin wires to place each brick in mid air flight. The middle layer is blue with a red and white striped belt with Captain America’s shield in the middle. The top layer represents Thor’s helmet. The helmet is silver with two white wings, one on each side of the helmet. Multiple views of cake with Thor’s helmet... Continue reading

This Awesome TARDIS Cake was made by Little Cherry Cake Company. This TARDIS will be a big hit at any Doctor Who birthday party. The TARDIS is painted blue and airbrushed with a darker blue overtone. There are two tiny metal looking handles and a metal lock on the front of the TARDIS. The white windows are slightly inset into the door frame. Beside the TARDIS is a white dog with black ears and nose. It looks like a Pug wearing Matt Smith’s red Fez hat and red bowtie. The cake board is purple and black with small white dots... If I go to Google and enter the word Steampunk, I get the following: What if steampunk wasn’t tied to the Victorian era? Can you take all the physical attributes of steampunk and apply them to a totally different place and time? Imagine taking Steampunk’s love for alternate history, inventions, and fashion and applying it to somewhere and somewhen else. If you could move steampunk to another place and time, where and when would it be? Now, I know what some of you are thinking “Cool idea, but isn’t this supposed to be a cake blog?” The idea of applying... Continue reading

Steampunk Sugar Geeks is a collaboration between cake decorators which celebrates steampunk. For the last few days, I’ve been featuring a bunch of these awesome steampunk cakes. Today, I’m featuring steampunk cakes that focus on fantasy. This includes a flying pig, a mermen, and a unicorn. The amazing steampunk flying pig cake shown above was made by The Wicked Little Cake Company. I can’t figure out if I’m supposed to say “Aw” because the pig is so cute or “Wow” because it the cake is so gorgeous. Henrick the Wonder Pig is easily the cutest flying pig in town. That... I love this cake! The image of Albert Einstein fishing for love is just so cool. This was Imaginarium Cakes contribution to Steampunk Sugar Geeks. Steampunk Sugar Geeks is a collaboration between cake decorators celebrating all things steampunk. The second I saw this cake, I started hearing two old song playing in my head. Johnny Lee’s Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places: I was lookin' for love in all the wrong places Lookin' for love in too many faces Searchin' their eyes, lookin' for traces Of what I'm dreamin' of Hopin' to find a friend and a lover... Chef Mitchie sent me these photographs of her awesome contribution to Steampunk Sugar Geeks. Steampunk Sugar Geeks is a collaboration between cake decorators celebrating all things steampunk. Chef Mitchie’s contribution is this amazing cake which resembles a steampunk cake decorating machine. The idea of a cake that decorates cakes is too cool! Chef Mitchie and her awesome cakes can be found on her bakery’s website, Facebook, and Twitter. When she began planning her contribution to Steampunk Sugar Geeks, Chef Mitchie really liked the idea of bringing old world fashion, mechanics, and lifestyle into a more modern world. She also liked... Continue reading

Avalon Cakes made this stunning Steampunk Supergirl Cake for Steampunk Sugar Geeks, a collaboration between cake decorators which celebrates steampunk. I love how Supergirl has the classic up, up, and away pose. Notice that the cake which Supergirl is standing on is bronze and covered in gears. This Supergirl isn’t powered by a Yellow Sun. This Supergirl is rocket powered. The flames shooting out of the rocket pack are so cool. I love how the rocket pack is covered in gears. I really like how Supergirl looks like a cross between the traditional Supergirl we all know and love and... Continue reading

I’ll be posting a bunch of the cakes made for Steampunk Sugar Geeks over the next few days. The Red Riding Hood figure is amazing! Snow White Sugar Skull by Sweet Janis The Day of the Dead is a holiday in Mexico, that uses art, music, cooking, and storytelling to celebrate the memories of family and friends who have died. These stories focus on remembering how the person lived and include family adventures, fun times, and lessons learned. Prior to Spanish colonization in the 16th century, the celebration took place at the beginning of summer. It was moved to October 31, November 1 and November 2 to coincide with the Roman Catholic triduum festival of Allhallowtide: All Hallows' Eve, Hallowmas, and All Souls' Day. Traditions...
