A few months ago, I got a letter from the people at Kenneth Cole---the clothing design company---about contributing an essay to a book they were putting together called Awearness. (Get it? A play on word here...) I immediately said yes because I remember way way back as a teenager (that's 15 years ago), buying Kenneth Cole shoes that had a smiling cow on the box. He was one of the first designers to put out leather-free shoes before it was cool and helped veggie-folks like me find them. Unfortunately, this was way before non-leather shoes were hip, so it was... Continue reading

I was in Las Vegas last week to kick off new models of my Simmons Natural Care by Danny Seo mattress line to furniture and sleep center dealers. Four days in Vegas? About 3 days too much. But I loved meeting everyone and did have a great time. I'm just happy to be home...literally on my own bed! I'm really excited to be offering a healthy, eco-friendly option for moms who want only the natural best for their little ones. This one features natural latex, soy foam and an all-natural covering on top (none of that terrible PVC covering). It's... Continue reading

Rancho La Puerta has a new cooking school called La Cocina que Canta. It's a school and culinary center that features an all-organic garden as well. Who better to lead us on this tour (and my cooking class) than the resident cat? He just sat there waiting for me to take his picture.... First, grab a hat. It's bright and sunny outside and you need to protect your skin from being scorched! My cooking partner Beth came from San Francisco for this trip. She has a new book coming out next year on detoxing your home from Rodale and told... Continue reading

I recently purchased a new computer for the craft room that will serve a few purposes. One, whenever I'm working on more graphics-heavy presentations, I think it'll be easier to work on a larger format computer. And for all my out-of-town guests, now they have a place to check their email at their leisure. Doing a little bit of research, I found this new computer system from Dell called the Studio Hybrid. I loved how compact it was and (from some of the reviews I read online) how whisper quiet it was. Here's some info right off Dell's website: Size... Continue reading

I can't believe Halloween is almost here. Remember the hot summertime months? Time is flying... Speaking of flying, I drive by this white barn all the time and I never get a chance to take a photo. But this time, I was stuck in traffic and managed to get a photo. I just love this jack-o-barn and think it's adorable. Anyway... This month in Better Homes and Gardens, my column focuses on going green this Halloween season. I thought I'd share some tips with you. Go check out the issue if you get a chance. PUMPKINS: Crack open ghourds and... Continue reading

Last week, I was in Texas to give the keynote speech at the The North Texas Clean Air Coalition's "working for clean air" awards. I had a great time meeting everyone involved with this important organization and I was impressed with all the amazing ideas the award recipients had. The beautiful venue was an old train station that was restored back to its former glory. Train travel, appropriately enough, is actually one of the greenest ways of getting from Point A to Point B. This upcoming Thanksgiving, I'm thinking of taking the Amtrak train to my holiday destination as a... Continue reading

Last week, I was invited by the good friends at Benjamin Moore paints to attend the Hall of Fame Awards hosted by Interior Design magazine. The awards are the Oscars of interior design/architecture of sorts, and it honored some incredible designers for their many years of innovative work. It was held at the famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, so of course I had to take some snapshots to share with all of you. Up above, is the entrance to the hotel. As you know, I am obsessed with LED holiday string lights. With the technology improving on... Continue reading

Last Friday, I had a photo shoot at my new house for Philadelphia Magazine. I love Philadelphia Magazine because A: it’s a very well written and researched regional publication and B: I live in the Philly area! So, it was an honor to have them come and shoot my home for their April issue. In this first pic, I asked to take a picture of one of the staffer’s feet to show that I have a very strict “no shoes” policy in my house. I’ve written that 80% of all the outside dirt, lead and pesticides are dragged in from... Continue reading

Well, it's been a while since I've had a contest on this blog, so here's a new one. The prize? TWO---yes, count 'em up, two whole boxes--of Jurlique skin care products. They were sent to me as gifts by Jurlique, but I'm re-gifting and recycling by giving it away to one lucky reader on this blog. (I must admit: I am rather fond of this packaging. It is a lovely gift). Anyway, to win the prize, answer this question: "What would you like to see me cover in my debut column in Better Homes & Gardens in August?" I need... Continue reading

Last week, we had a photo shoot at my house for my new organic bath and beauty line. The line is called Wholearth and will be launching on Earth Day (April 22nd). It's been a product line two years in the works with my partners at Boom, LLC and I'll post more about the line, it's ingredients, USDA certified organic fragrance, eco packaging and much more in the future. But for now, in 10 degree weather, I thought I'd share some behind the scenes photos of the shoot. Above is a collection shot under a vintage glass cloche. The weather... Continue reading

I've been having a lot of fun blogging over at the website ReThink What's Possible about a variety of eco-friendly living ideas and solutions. Check out the website for some of my past posts. This week, I'm going back in time and remembering my field trip to the Marcal paper plant in New Jersey. About 1 and 1/2 years ago, I taped a segment there for my TV show "Simply Green with Danny Seo." It was fascinating---in a school field trip sorta way---to see how office paper become pulped and pressed into recycled paper towels and toilet tissue. You can... Continue reading

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you! I'm taking this weekend, Christmas Eve and Christmas off from blogging. Here's a photo from my Christmas tree from last year: a live balled tree decorated with a tea party theme. If you haven't decorated your tree yet, why not raid your pantry for tea bags, strainers, Chinese food fortune cookies and tea cups? Enjoy the time off and relish in every second of this greener, kinder holiday season! Posts will begin December 26th. -Danny Continue reading

Happy Weekend! Hope you're enjoying it as much as I am. I thought I'd answer some questions---well, more like comments--- that have been popping up on this blog, other blogs and in the inbox at dannyseo.com. Question #1: "You talk about the environment too much." Answer: DUH! I kid... but seriously, that's like saying Mario Batali talks about Italian food too much.... It's my entire livelihood! Question #2: "Just because it is green doesn't mean we should consume it! If we have a bed that is not green - and we get rid of that bed now or later it... Continue reading

1. Watch the first of several online episodes of "Watch Isaac." See as I show Isaac a cute JCPenney t-shirt as he guesses what eco fabrics it's made from. 2. Bid on a Simmons Natural Care by Danny Seo mattress to benefit Bette Midler's charity, The New York Restoration Project. Head on over to CharityBuzz to bid online! 3. See an actual office detox online. I raided the offices of Sprig.com and showed them how to detox, declutter and "green" their work space. It's a fun piece! 4. Pick up some eco & cheap bed pillows for just $12.95! Filled... Continue reading

Congrats to "KIEREN" for winning the handmade tote bag. Many thanks to all of you for entering. I have learned that we all love chocolate, wine and tofu on this blog! I chose a number at random to pick this contest's winner; if they left a way to contact them, they won! Congrats to Kieren for leaving "Fruit. Berries. Wine" as her additions to the grocery list. Plenty more contests to come! Continue reading

A fun new eco product came in the mail today for me try out and test. It's called the BRELLI, and it's an "eco-chic umbrella that packs a style punch rain or shine." In other words, it's the world's first 100% biodegradable umbrella. The umbrella features a certified biodegradable "plastic" canopy. The innovative new material has a unique composition which allows it to totally biodegrade in landfill environments. Made from a bio-plastic that comes from renewable resources, the Brelli will breakdown in landfills in just 1 to 2 years (it takes hundreds of years for a traditional umbrella to breakdown).... How many dress shirts do you dry clean every week? A: I wash and press them myself. B: Just a few C: My frequent dry cleaning punch card is full ANSWER: It’s well-known that dry cleaning is bad for the environment. Almost 95% of traditional dry cleaners use a chemical called Perc, which is a solvent to get all the stains and spots out of clothes. Perc, unfortunately, is a carcinogen which has been linked to bladder and cervical cancer and eye, nose, throat and skin irritations. Even freshly dry cleaned clothes brought home, the perc residue can continue to... Continue reading

I've been in Los Angeles for a while working on a big (and fun) home makeover project and I've gotten used to the idea of hotel living. When I say that I've gotten used to it, I don't mean that I've grown to love it. I mean, I am starting to accept the fact I have to live in hotel rooms as part of my job. I digress... I've blogged about using newspaper around the house to detox things. You can stuff shoes with newspaper to absorb odor. You see, newspaper is designed to absorb ink, so it'll absorb other... So, I've started what I call "pre-production" on my new book and part of that fun work is that I take off some time and just create a bunch of different projects to get the creative juices going. Actually, none of these projects will probably ever make it into the book, it's just an exercise to get my mind out of "business" and into "creative" mode. So, here's something that I'm not sure I like or not. I took a dry cleaner hanger (who doesn't have one of these flimsy hangers?) and I took some vintage wooden beads in a... Continue reading

Last weekend, I was in New York City to help train the sales associates at the Crate and Barrel store on Madison Avenue (by Central Park) about the Natural Care line of mattresses. I'm proud to say that Natural Care is now also available at all Crate and Barrel furniture stores nationwide, in addition to JCPenney stores and many fine sleep specialty stores nationwide, too. In between training sessions, I walked around the empty store (it was done in the morning before the store opened) and felt like I had a private store all to myself. There is something very... For a while now, I've been using this super adhesive glue (E6000) to glue random plates, cups and mugs together into tall serving tiered trays as gifts. They are so easy to make and all you have to do is have some of this glue and patience to let it fully dry. So, imagine my surprise to see this lamp in Anthropologie recently: stacked plates, cups and a teapot to make a lamp. I'm thinking these were vintage pieces that they repurposed into a lamp and the end results of kinda fun. I do love how Anthropologie is always pushing... Continue reading

Happy Valentine's Day! Just a funny shot to post about today: my laundry ghost. I washed some t-shirts and a hoodie today and hung them all up to air dry. Lately, I've been air-drying a lot more because A: it's good for the environment and B: it doesn't shrink my shirts. I've even gotten to the point of piling t-shirts next to the vents in the guest room to dry more quickly. The forced air from my heating system gets them dry in minutes. But as I looked at the laundry area this morning, I thought this looked like a... Continue reading
