It has been a few weeks since our last blog entry- BUT we have been busy on the other end working on the development of a new blog presence. On or about March 1 we will officially "power this blog down" and begin posting and promoting our new blog, which will have its own dedicated URL address. The new blog will be more focused on small businesses and feature posts and contributions from our strategic partners that deal in the business community. For the time being- we appreciate those of you who have read this blog and commented or responded... Continue reading

contributed from the Financial Network Group and Simply Money; a strategic partner of Emery Federal Credit Union This isn’t good—a new study says one in five Americans ignore their finances. Javelin strategy and research found 19% of Americans say they don’t check their finances at all. That means they don’t look at their accounts on bank websites, use personal finance software, or anything like that. And javelin found that those of us who *do* check our finances regularly, using either the bank’s website, or our own software program, are doing it *less often*. It’s not too hard to figure out... I came across an interesting read on a few weeks ago entitled "Chasing Lost Brands," for the complete article click here Products and Brands come and go all the time. Anne Kadet, the author of the article, mentions different name brands for coffee creamer all the way to Flex Shampoo. i used Flex Shampoo back in the day, I hardly noticed when it disappeared. I want to add to her list a bit. Wang Computers- anyone remember that? Emery's main offices are a few streets over from a building that used to be known as the "Wang" building.... Continue reading

For a brief moment this week I have felt what it has been like to be "y2k'd." I regularly back up data to an external hard drive, albeit monthly, so I am assured to not have lost nearly as much as I could have. Almost as a religious ritual- on or about the 1st of every month I back up the hard drive. Unfortunately when the lid of my 3-year old ThinkPad closed on the night of Nov. 30 after watching a streamed version of the Office on it would be the last opportunity I would have to view... Over the next few days our Blog may be "offline"- our web administrator's (who happens to be me) computer had a fatal crash this morning. Funny thing is, Emery FCU is looking into beginning to offer a Service Organization (CUSO) for computer services... we may have our first client in line... To be continued... Continue reading

We've done this a few times over the years and have always attracted a fair amount of feedback, so we'll pitch another one out and see what happens. No, this isn't financially relevant (unless you're in the movie industry) but 99.9% of those who may come across this I'm willing to bet have seen these. So, with that in mind, here are my picks for the "Top 5 Christmas Movies:" 5) "A Christmas Story" Set in Hammond, Indiana in the 1940's, and poor old Ralphie only wants one thing for Christmas: "an official Red Ryder cabine-action 200-shot range model air... Well, hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend- I, personally am not going to eat again until Christmas. Did anyone take in any Black Friday Weekend shopping? I am proud to say, I did NOT. Unless buying a few strands of Christmas lights to replace broken ones from last year qualifies. I did treat myself to a warm cup of Caribou Dark Chocolate Mocha though, but I tend to do that on most days. Case-in-point, I'm not the shopper of the family. USA Today predicts that Online shopping is on pace to make another round of significant gains on traditional... Continue reading

Anyone in my family knows, as is with most guys also (I think)- shopping isn't my thing. Wandering around aimlessly in retail stores for hours on end hoping that inspiration hits me just doesnt' rank on my top ten. Yes, I am one of the working souls today; no shopping for me. Today is truly one of the only days of the year I gladly take my place behind the work desk and forgoe the shopping ritual. Upon my arrival at the office today I sat down to begin the day with the orderly reading of the various daily newspapers,... Continue reading

If you live in Cincinnati it's hard to concentrate on much else- unless you had been living under a rock the last few days as the Magic Number slinked down to "Clinch." Last night around 10:20pm (or so) Reds Right Fielder Jay Bruce swung the bat on the first pitch of the bottom of the 9th and sent the ball over the Center Fielf Wall to the extreme delight of 30k+ fans at Great American Ballpark. The win brought the Central Division Championship home to the Reds for the first time since 1995 and represents the return to prominence for... Continue reading

In my morn ing scan of the financial news of the day I came across an article on the CNNMoney page entitled "Bank Fee Whac-a-Mole." I couldn't have worded it any better. For the full article, click here . Back in February Congress passed a sweeping financial industry overhaul bill that was intended to protect the consumer by limiting the interchange rate that banks (and Credit Unions) charge retailers for credit cards swipes (among other things). The intention was that by limiting the interchange to a flat fee as opposed to a percentage, then retailers would then pass those savings... Continue reading

Over the weekend, Emery FCU was able to partner with the Liberty Twp Mom's Club to sponsor an exhibit at the Liberty Twp Fall Festival. Yes, it was a Fall festival technically in Summer. Word is that they wanted to add a 5k to the event and this weekend was the only spot left the sponsoring organization could do it. Either way, it was a great event that we were happy to not just to sponsor- but also to participate in. Emery FCU has been involved in the Fall Festival for the past three years and by far, this was... Continue reading

From SimplyMoney Blog, 55KRC. One of the fastest ways to sink a budget is to give in to impulse buys. Yeah, we’ve all been there. You go to the mall for one thing, then you walk by a window display and suddenly find yourself spending fifty bucks on something you don’t *really* need. Or maybe you go to pick up one or two things at the store, and end up at the check-in with a cart-full of stuff. So let’s start there. Your first mistake was getting a cart. Retailers know that once they get you to buy stuff that’s... Continue reading

First of all, thank you to our Members, Vendors, Partners, Clients, and concerned bystanders and anyone I may have missed that participated in our 2010 Charity Golf Outing! This year, despite the economy that continues to lag- we "oversold" our event and had to expand! 38 teams of 4 or approximately 150 people participated in our event! We are humbled by the response that we received from those who came out! In a few days we will post a full line of those who helped sponsor this event. As in the past, all proceeds from this event will go to... Continue reading

I am not a big defender of Big Banks... I mean, hey, I work for a Credit Union right? I will concede that not all of the things they do or fees they impose are entirely their fault though. Legislation passed a few months ago by Congress is going to limit the amount of money, or maybe percentage is a better way to put it, that Banks (and Credit Unions) can charge as "interchange" for Credit Card transactions. I guess the thought of this being that- if the "Fat Cats" (as they are usually referred to) are limited by what... Continue reading

You’ve probably heard that credit inquiries can *hurt* your credit score—but just how big is the *ding*? Well, it depends on the kind of inquiry. If you apply for a loan or a credit card, that’s a *hard inquiry*, and it will affect your score, typically shaving off one to five points per inquiry. It can cost you *more* points if you have a short credit history or few accounts. But you can also get *dinged* for things like applying for a new mobile phone contract, or renting an apartment. The general rule is that if an inquiry means you’d... Continue reading

Sure, Facebook is fun—mostly, but it’s also a great place to find *free stuff*! Companies know few young people read the paper, or watch as many TV commercials as they used to, but they *do* use social media like Facebook and Twitter. So those companies are using those platforms to reward loyal customers and promote new products. Which means you can find everything from free food coupons to free weight loss products on Facebook and Twitter, and free and discounted event tickets, too. Sometimes it’s as easy as clicking on a Facebook fan page. Sometimes the promotions are contests, where... Continue reading

ANYBODY who knows me will tell you that I am not a morning person. I woke up out of a dead sleep at 4:30am with a strangle-hold on my cell phone (which doubles as my alarm clock) because I couldn't get the thing to shut off. Then nano-seconds later when a begin to come to I realize that the noise I was hearing wasn't my alarm clock, but a chorus of fire alarms going off in my family's house. My family and I live in a 2-story, plus basement house, so for fire alarms to be going off on multiple... Continue reading

Through our association with Nathan Bachrach and the Simply Money team we get the opportunity to contribute stories and expertise on Cincinnati's 55KRC (AM 550). Yesterday, our Business Development executive, Britt Scearce, was called on literally at 3pm to contribute to an exclusive interview regarding the banking practice of "batching" that would be aired on the 10pm news. With an extensive background in lending (and lending practices), Britt was able to pull his information together in just under 30 minutes to complete the interview. I'm not being paid by an attorney to write this- just writing from a "fresh" personal experience. If you or a loved one passed away tomorrow- what would become of your hard earned savings? What about the cherished "Grandfather" clock that has been passed through generations? Or how about trivial things like your car or baseball card collection that you've had since... whenever? What about the important decisions like: "do not resuscitate" orders, whom your savings should be directed to, who makes decisions regarding your care if you are deemed incapable to do so?--- Etc.... I recently had the agonizing... Continue reading
