Image from graphicdesign.com Right now I have figured out a way to fit going to the gym into my life and the difference has been amazing. (Diary of a Fit Chick soon to come) Jay seems to be in great head space. Making brave decisions, having great ideas. Elm is like a sponge and has become a great leader in SK. Peekay is using so many advanced words and is starting the beginning stages of printing. We are missing the sun we soaked up in Florida over the holidays and wishing our toes were still in the sand. What are... Continue reading

I started my week in the life project a day early. Last Sunday because the weather was perfect and the leaves were beautiful. Today, again such a beautiful Sunday, and even though this time we had to have toques and winter coats on I got some of my best shots that I can use on the 8 X 10 pages. I was much more conscious as well of placement of my subjects to have room for some of the scrapbooking pieces when I go to make my album. I took out our 50 mm lens and had some fun at... I can't believe how fast this week is going. Having Halloween as a backdrop to this week has been fun. Has given us lots of photo op type of moments that may not have been presented another week. These are mostly from Wednesday but some from other days this week as well, I can't wait to start putting this album together! These are just a few of the zillion pictures I have taken. HOME Our four pumpkins. Elm checking them out all lit up. Jay and Peekay cleaning up the leaves We made ghost pops to bring as treats to... Continue reading

I have been having fun and possibly blinding my family during the last few days documenting our Week in the Life. I am writing down less than I thought I would as I document as I feel I am going to remember. Possibly a big mistake. I am finding I need to know so much more about this camera. Frustrating that I can't seem to get the lighting right in certain settings. Here are some of the images from a week in our life: Brushing teeth before bed morning sanity in my special mug seeing peekay off to school sick... Continue reading

With the sun so beautiful and the weather so warm, my "Week in the Life' scrapbooking project took life a day early. Erin has a double ear infection and has had on non-stop flow of fevers but she needed a bit of fresh air and some fun off the couch so we headed to the leaves. A friend on facebook had posted this quote about Autumn the other day and I could not agree more: "Autumn, The Year's Last Loviest Smile" ~ William Cullen Bryant Continue reading

image from Ali Edwards website So..the week of October 27th to November 2nd I will be immersed in capturing our daily life, the routine, the places we go and the people we see. Scrapbooking a 'Week in the Life'. I love this project as it will be interesting to be able to look back at what our routine was and how different it becomes in just a year. (or not) It will also force me to do something with the pictures that I take that just sit on our hard drive. So I asked Jay and the kids for the... Continue reading

Illustration by Mike Graston Okay fellow Windsorites, it is almost time to step up to the polls and make your big vote! I have tried over the last few months, of what feels like a very long municipal election, to get inspired by a candidate and fnd a clear choice. I am not left with that feeling for Mayor, Councillor for Ward 1 or Trustee. Having said that I am feeling more comfortable leaning toward Drew Dilkens for Mayor. Yesterday, the list of campaign donors came out. I felt it was fairly telling and although I am sure there would... Continue reading

In Apri of 2013 the largest and deadliest accidents in the internatial apparel industry occured. Rana Plaza in Bangledesh. More than 1000 people died. Thousands more injured and now a year and a half later are still affected by the loss of income from family members who died, young daughters now having more pressure on them to work to feed their young siblings. Fear, trama and the chilling feeling that it won't be the last accident weigh heavy on their minds I am sure, as they head each morning to mass produce the latest deals in the fast fashion industry.... Day 405 ~ I have been in a losing battle but I am not giving up. Since day 1 I have had patches of success and new patterns woven to lead me in the right direction. I have also had so many other days where I am picking up the wrong foods and making bad health choices. Balance: Balance is a such a struggle for me and so many others. Working full time, trying to spend meaningful time with the kids where I am present and not either worrying about something from work or doing dishes or laundry. Navigating all... Continue reading

A few days away from it being a year since I last blogged. How did that happen? Right now we are soaking in the warmth of the sunshine... Enjoying the change to fall colours in my beautiful garden... This happens a lot right now as Elm is reading up a storm these days.. ....and this is always what PK can be doing at any given moment When things aren't so hectic we have even started a new family tradition of movie nights (with popcorn of course) Right now it is all about easing into the season and the routine that... Little Elm's things she knows for sure (at 4 years and 1 day / all answers spurted out of her mouth within 30 seconds) ~that we are going to buy her a box that she can put her little toys in (so her brother can not touch them) and she is going to paint it pink and purple and sparkles ~that she wants to learn how to draw a pony ~that she can eat like a grown up at a restaurant, sitting quiety and eating nicely (where on earth did that come from) The things I know for sure* ~As... I had this idea for a weekly blog topic that just came to me the other day. I would blog about 'the things I know for sure'. After thinking about it for a bit, it seemed like such a great idea, I starting considering that it was not my own. Sure enough, a quick google search displayed that it was the idea of the one and only Oprah. So Oprah, I am borrowing your idea for the purposes of my little mommy blog. Thursday's here at Little Elm are now - *the things I know for sure* Thanks Oprah! The... Continue reading

I am sure some of you wonder.....why do I blog? About a decade ago or so, I was told the sister of a young man I went to highschool with who recently killed in a car accident wrote a blog. I checked it out for curiosity sake. She was cool, from a big city and so different from me. Her links section led me to a blog that opened up a whole world to me of woman who shared stories about their lives, their struggles as working creative people writing books, photography etc..many going through fertility journeys, many already young... Oh my sweet little girl. I didn't realize how many times it would be so hard to let you get a little further away from me before you are even four. It is your first day in kindergarten. You are three, your birthday in a few weeks. How did all those days and nights happen between when I first held your tiny body and now, a person who carries a backpack and eats lunch on her own. We worked hard to get you ready for today, but you have been ready for so long. All the gathering of stuff, the... Continue reading

With my sweet girl only days away from making the big leap to grade school, I have been pretty nostalgic lately. I read my very first post on this blog (a love letter to her) out loud to her. It was an interesting experience sharing those words with her, knowing she actually understands some of it now and that some of it maybe she will never fully understand. Anyway, here it is. A blast from the past. 2009 to be exact. http://littleelm.typepad.com/little-elm/2009/10/my-sweet-elm.html Continue reading

As little elm approaches 4, I am realizing how quickly her perceptions of life are being formed. I feel this nagging pressure to start cultivating our family's values more formally. In order to best support our children as they grow into the beings they will eventually become I feel my husband and I have to agree on some guiding principles. I feel I am constantly trying to find one fitting message that I can hang from our walls that from now until they come back with their grandchildren will be understood as to who we are here. Some that I... Continue reading

Day 1 ~ I came across the above truth on the Carrot's & Dates facebook site a few months ago. (which since then has developed into a beautiful web site!) It made an impact in my brain and heart but not in my actions. I knew the time was coming though. Since then healthful recipes and posts on: > the Carrot's and Dates site, >the always inspiring Bites for Babies site, >and a naturopath friend of mine Shelley from Waterloo all have been making me want to live differently, eat differently. These are things I already know. I know how... Continue reading

In a small town in India we walked by the scene of a new house being built. This woman struck me. She carried the bricks with ease from one side of the construction site to the other. A process that here , in North America, would have been done with the use of machines, not people. That would have been done quicker and more efficiently, but here her hands would touch every inch of the work she did, it seemed. One process, mutiple ways of completing the task. She is helping me today. Helping me to remember there are different... Continue reading

It is always only a matter of time until this blog pulls me back. I have been craving blogging for a few months now and of course always get stuck in the, 'I am going to start a new blog with a new name that is professionally designed and more a reflection of me.." phase and it paralyzes what I actually want to do here, which is write and share. So once again, I am keeping it simple and coming back to this place that I created almost four years ago (where did the time go!) where I can carve... Continue reading

It is incredible how four years can pass in a blink of an eye, but that deep ache in your heart from missing someone never quites heals. I am typing this from the house in which Jay's mom passed away four years ago today. It feels stranger yet as the election is brewing as it was four years ago that I was able to tell Jeanne, before she passed, that the US elected their first Aftrican American President. If felt good for her to know that before she was gone for some reason. Like, if this terrible thing is going... Continue reading

This is me, feeling my best at 35. Baby weight mostly lost (thanks to the 17 day diet and my motivation team of Jodes and Jay), hair done, new dress on and a rum and coke in hand before a night of crazy dancing. It was quite the year, 35. I never realized how much two kids was going to shake me up. Of course I should just be saying how wonderful my children are and how grateful I am that I had this year with them, which I am. That is the right thing to say. Truly though, it... Continue reading

I just purchased my very own copy of 'A Field Guide to Now' by Christina Rosalie, one of my blogger heroes. This is the book that I backed (along with many) quite some time ago through Kickstarter. So excited to see the book come to fruition and to be part of it. It also excites me how anyone who has a dream can find new and interesting ways to reach them. Kickstarter is such an amazing tool for any creative person with an idea who just needs a little help to make it happen. The video below doesn't really do... Continue reading
