Students! You may have heard the unsettling statistic that there are over seventeen million applicants for every graduate vacancy in the UK. The stats may be true. But be not afraid, studious youngster. If you are a new or imminent graduate with a 2.1 or 1st class degree in something mathematical, strong maths skills, very good A-levels (A in Maths), and some Java or C#, we can pretty much guarantee you an interview for a fantastic development role with one of the UK's best employers, a household name whose entry level graduate salary is £28k + all sorts of nice... Well, we’ve made it to the office every day this week, despite ice and plague (flu), but as of tomorrow we will be devoting ourselves to a short spell of festive eating, hat-wearing and bickering. Hooray! It has been a tough year for all, but the next one will be better - just you wait. 2011 is a fine name for a year. After that we have 2012, when we’ll find out the truth of those pesky Mayan prophesies. (My guess is that the world won’t end, but let’s try especially hard to enjoy this Christmas and the next one... Continue reading

Picture it, dire Reader. Deep in HTS's secret mountainside nerve-centre in Digbeth, our lead consultant is scrolling through the latest CV postings on an internet job board. She's looking for a Business Systems Analyst* with strong Business Objects experience (or "strong BO"). Naturally, some of the four million candidates turning up in her search have all the relevant terms on their CVs, but are, on closer inspection, not Business Systems Analysts* with strong Business Objects experience. No: they are golf coaches, mobile aquarium attendants and horse whisperers. But some of the candidates in her search results are Business Systems Analysts*... Continue reading

You are expected to ask questions at job interviews. It's the law. To neglect asking questions is one of the cardinal sins of job interviews - I'd place it somewhere between turning up late and sneezing into your hand then wiping it on the chair. Not asking questions can count against you, resulting in a failed interview, or even, in some cases, death by impalement*. A good question shows you're interested in the job and the company. It also uses up time that your interviewer might otherwise spend asking you difficult questions about your lack of semiconductor knowledge or your... Continue reading

Many* of my Readers enjoy sending me constructive criticism and requests - and you know what? I listen. I listen because it's the fans who make this all worthwhile. That's why I always take care to read every reader's email, no matter how inane, and send a personalised reply, then track them down and leap out at them. They deserve nothing less. Now, many* of my Readers ask me, 'Nick, could you occasionally write bite-sized job-seeking and interview tips that can be consumed without my having to plough through all the usual tedious padding?' Well, today, I thought I'd give... Continue reading

Forgot to mention: HTS Consultant Varun went to the Home Office and the HO people fell at his feet and wept until he agreed to become a permanent UK resident. Hoorah! Our nation is a richer place. We are celebrating tonight by going out for a curry and some happy-slapping. In other news, I’ve missed the Queen’s birthday (again), and tonight Nick Clegg is going to get pincered by Brown and Cameron over his plans to have us all speaking German* and using monopoly money by 2020. And too right. I hope Clegg has a powerful rebuff to their anachronistic... Continue reading

There are responsibilities attached to creating a blog that attracts literally handfuls of readers from all across one’s family. In particular, one has a responsibility to direct those readers away from your own blog and towards other, more interesting blogs. In this area I have been remiss. Too many readers have come here, wanted quickly to go elsewhere, and have not been provided with proper direction. No more! I’ve added to my formerly meagre blog roll a tasty twosome of great sites that you’d do well to look at if you’re involved in job huntin’, recruitin’ or anythin’ else: Simon... Continue reading
