I love this Michelle Jonas Dress! It is the perfect dress for the rainy blustery weather we have been having here on the island. For those readers who live on Maui, you know that it gets totally muggy on a rainy day. The moisture in the air has me craving clothes that cover from the rain but also breathe and look beautiful. The skirt on this dress is a wonderful twirl of gauze with lace cutouts and just moves with you and the atmosphere so well. The halter neck thrusts my bare chest forward a bit more than I am... Thank you sweet Marian. Dries can do no wrong.

I am in awe of Dries Van Noten! I feel this man secretly whispers to my wildest dreams. The look of his Spring 2011 Collection is that great tightrope walk between the delicate and strong, always with the thoughtful eye on unexpected mix of prints, colors, embellishments that is so intimately Dries Van Noten. The designer drew inspiration for the collection from the now deceased Belgian Painter Jef Verheyen. Verheyen's inspirations were to create paintings that really captured the beauty of light. The result of this inspiration is a dream like quality to the clothes. This collection speaks volumes to... Continue reading

New Zealand is my other home. The other half is from there, so I have definitely done my time in good ol' NZ. Aside from New Zealand's breathe stealing natural beauty, culture, ICE CREAM, is it's amazing fashion scene. If you haven't heard of designers like Karen Walker or Stolen Girlfriends Club, some brushing up is in order. The city of Auckland is the biggest in the Pacific, so they are the fashion epicenter for us Island Sirens. One of the designers I adore in New Zealand is Trelise Cooper. Her aesthetic has that feminine whimsy that that makes you... Continue reading

Boots are that one fall thing that I go ape over!
While the rest of the world gets ready for fall, Hawaii stays loyally season less. That means that most of the wonderful coats and knits etc. from all the fall collections are admired from a distance. That, or we just go on Christmas holiday someplace cooler where we can wear all our cold climate clothing. One thing us hot weather residents can get away with are gorgeous fall boots that I personally wear all year long. I am loving all the python embossed leather if you couldn't tell. These Burberry Prorsum boots catch my eye. I know, the python theme... Continue reading

Quite Frankly, I love Maki Nomiya! I know that sounds so hellishly 90's of me but she is pretty flippin amazing. Pizzicato Five is one of my all time favorite bands EVER. Gotta love the Japanese for being so totally dope in that off beat way! Maki's style has been something I have always been delighted about. I cant say that my style is very similar to her but I still find her pretty inspiring regardless. She did the whole costume 60's and 70's look so well but with that fantastic Japanese reworking that made her so ultra kawaii. I... Continue reading

I am finding myself drawn to animal prints for footwear right now. I think it is because of all the South American fiction writers I have been reading lately. All those passionate tales of harsh dry weather or treacherous jungle terrain. I feel transported to rugged and exotic places full of wildlife. There are always at least five pairs of shoes that I totally lust after at any given moment. Right now these two top my list. The Giuseppe Zanotti leopard wedge boots were a bit of a surprise for me since Im not the biggest fan of the line.... Continue reading

Last weekend (sorry for the late post) started with an unexpected surprise from my second older brother Ian. Ian has been living on the East Coast delightfully wrapped up in the East Coast art scene (check out his work here). I was totally over the moon when he dropped back home unannounced for a visit. He is here for a month of RR and also to visit our friend Orlando Reyes. Orlando participated in an artist's residency with another talented friend, Favianna Rodriguez, at the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center. Orlando and Favianna were the featured artists in The Politics... Danny-Joe is such a talented wig maker and colorist. For as small as Maui is, it is paradise and it attracts many people of talent. I feel so fortunate to see the creations in his wacky wig world. He is also the sweetest, most chatty person. Bonus!

I really hope they get pulled and featured for that cover shoot in California. They are crazy! The second one is blowin my mind. How did he do that?

On Friday I went to visit Rutz Salon in Kihei where I have been getting my hair done forever. My red color needed some TLC (Major TLC!) and Rutz is the place I go because red is a tricky one. My colorist, Danny-Joe, is also a wig maker. In the past few months he and Rutz owner Linda, had entered a wig making competition. They haven't received the results of the competition yet but I am so blown away by what Danny-Joe came up with. These are wigs made entirely out of pool noodles! You know the ones, the long... I am constantly searching with a passion on line for that one unique piece. The one that when I think about it I cannot believe that it is actually in my wardrobe. There is just a certain kind of elation you get when a piece resonates with you so much. Something so special, so timeless, so one in a billion that no matter how much you searched around, it all seemed worth it. For some time I have been reading from many other bloggers about the wonderful London based designer Anita Quansah . Her pieces have such an amazing sculptural... Continue reading

This is deviating a bit from my fashion exploits but I am so happy for the summer Obon festivals here in Hawaii! Hawaii being the multi-cultural place that it is, it is a joy relishing all of the different cultural festivals here. These many cultures impact island life so much. Obon (or just Bon) is an over 500 year old Japanese Buddhist custom in which families honor their deceased by cleaning and decorating the graves of their ancestors. The ancestors spirits are supposed to visit their respective family alters at this time too. There is also a huge festival hosted... Continue reading
