I was quite delighted at the arrival of a (rather absurdly large) package yesterday, finally my Beckett Simonon shoes had arrived! To refresh your memory, I took a chance on this startup shoe company that offers high quality shoes at much lowered prices due to the fact that there are no middlemen involved. I had very high hopes considering how I fell hard for the Grant Wingtips on the website, having already read some mixed reviews, I anxiously opened the very cute box to discover some pretty solid shoes! I think it is important to recognize the fact that these... Continue reading

One of my New Year's resolutions was to wear sunscreen every day. Now that I'm pushing thirty I am really trying to focus on protecting my skin the best I can. We start losing collagen and firmness in our skin in our late twenties so I am hopeful that my new regimen will help keep my skin looking young and smooth for years to come. I have tried many an SPF in my day and can say that the Josie Maran Argan Oil Daily Moisturizer w/ Broad Spectrum 40 spf is the best I have used. As per my new... Continue reading

Apparently I am totally out of the loop on all things Jillian Michaels because I just found out about her new book being released next month! According to the manufacturer you will learn to: • Utilize Jillian’s insider secrets for optimizing your fat-burning potential • Dispel myths and avoid diet trends that will damage your metabolism and make it harder for you to lose weight • Banish self-sabotage, build support, and cultivate lasting motivation • Navigate and circumvent every possible pitfall presented by any situation or circumstance you could come up against—from weight-loss plateaus to travel, budget, and time constraints... It's that time of year again! The time when the best reality show on television breathes life, color and plenty of sequins into a dull and grey Winter. Last night marked the premiere of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 5 and as per usual it did not fail to disappoint! I have been pathetically obsessed with this show since day one and it just keeps getting better! If you are unfamiliar with the premise, first crawl out from under your rock and then catch up, most of the seasons are currently available on Netflix. I won't go into too much detail... Lately I have been feeling like my cardio routine has been getting a bit... predictable. I know it's best for our bodies to change things up so that we don't get too conditioned (and thus expend less energy) and HIIT (high intensity interval training) for the treadmill is just the thing to get me out of my rut. My usual treadmill experience involves a 2 minute warm up at 3.5 followed by a 33-38 minute run at a steady 7.5 pace with a 1.0% incline. This usually results in a ~500 calorie expenditure and anywhere between 4-5 miles. However today... Continue reading

Even though we are in the dead of winter and the weather is depressingly cold, I can't help but think about this Summer and the beach! There is nothing I love more than a trip to Rehoboth. Maybe it is the fact that my birthday usually falls on Memorial Day weekend but there is nowhere I'd rather be than hanging out at the beach. Ironically enough I'm not actually a huge fan of being ON the beach. I don't mind sitting on a towel for an hour or so but I'd much rather be shopping walking around town than sitting... I'm actually not much of a fragrance person. I think it has something to do with the fact that while growing up my father practically forbade any scented products in our house. We used to get in trouble for chewing Bubblicious watermelon gum because it apparently smelled too fragrant! So I think I have some deep-seated fear that anytime I use a product with scent it will most definitely offend somebody's olfactory system. That being said one of the few fragrances I use is pictured above, Encre Noire by Lalique. I should let you know that I really can't stand... Continue reading

January is almost over so I figure I would share with you some of my favorite things to nosh on lately. While not all of these choices are the most healthy they can easily fit into your daily allotment of treat foods! Seapoint Farms Dry Roasted Edamame - This is definitely one of my most favorite snacks ever! It is perfect for when you are craving something crunchy and salty but don't want to indulge in pretzels or chips which have basically zero nutritional value. These delicious and satisfying little beans are perfect as is or sprinkled on top of... Continue reading

Anybody who knows me knows that, just like Liz Lemon, I absolutely adore Ina Garten. When it was announced that she would be appearing in Wilmington to speak (probably about her fabulous big shirt collection) I knew I had to go! In all seriousness I am expecting her to give some really great advice on both cooking and entertaining. If you've ever watched an episode of Barefoot Contessa you know that Ina knows how to entertain, and do so in a classy, unpretentious way! It also doesn't hurt when she occasionally throws shade at Sandra Lee. Every recipe I have... Continue reading

I'm actually pretty thrilled to be sharing this information with you, my last official day working as a indentured servant "legal administrative assistant" was Friday, January 18th, 2013, woo hoo!!!! For reasons I won't horrify bore you with, my departure was a long time coming. During my four year tenure I learned a lot about myself and also met some amazingly wonderful people that I am so happy to have in my life. I knew I did not want to languish in a career in which I hold absolutely zero interest, and one of my goals before turning 30 (next... Continue reading

I know, I know, another workout DVD!! Well like I said this time of year is kind of a nightmare at the gym so I've been trying to do the bulk of my working out at home. Since I get bored easily I like having a large library of options and my latest purchase is from one of faves, Jackie Warner. Bottom line, her 30 Day Fast Start is HARD!!!! What makes this different from most of my other DVDs is this one is pretty much all strength training with little-to-no cardio. However instead of the usual straight forward strength... The latest addition to my exercise arsenal is a classic, the exercise ball! I had one years ago which was undoubtedly lost in one of my 43 moves, but my newest one comes by way of Max Fitness. What is so great about this exercise ball is that it comes with a foot pump to assist in the grueling (and often dizziness-inducing) blow up process! It still took a good twenty minutes or so for the ball to inflate completely but I have to admit it definitely beats blowing into that little straw and passing out. What I love about... When embarking upon a new, healthy lifestyle people often struggle with coming to terms with eliminating certain things from their diet. Usually the types of foods that are now "forbidden" are of course all the things that we seem to enjoy the most: cookies, cake, chips, french fries etc. Of course going from eating pretty much whatever you want to promising yourself that you will "never have another french fry again!" is a pretty difficult transition and quite frankly, nearly impossible! Even those of us with iron will power struggle with nearly impossible-to-resist cravings from time to time. I'm sure... Continue reading

As a guy, even I am envious of Cameron Diaz' amazing arms! They are lean and toned in a way that shows she really works for that kind of definition. I'm hoping that by Spring I too will have some enviable arms and can more confidently rock one of the million tank tops I have! I found this great 10 minute workout by FitSugar with Cameron's trainer, Teddy Bass, which is what I assume an abbreviated version of the workout he puts Ms. Diaz thru! Continue reading

So I recently took a chance on a startup shoe company, see those babies above... only $79.00 with free shippingg, how could I resist??!?!! If you're wondering how any quality shoe can be less than $100, Beckett Simonon's "shtick" (hey, we all need one!) is that they skip all the marketing/advertising/middlemen aspect that most companies utilize (which is where the high mark-up usually comes into play) and ship directly from their factory. I'm nothing if not a supporter of a small business! Even though my shoe collection is alarming rather large, I have yet to find a really cute, everyday... Continue reading

Hello, my name is Michael and I'm addicted to Amazon! Much to the chagrin of both my boyfriend and the UPS man (I'm sorry!!) I can't stop buying things off Amazon!! Seriously, is there anything they DON'T have?! In the past few weeks I've purchased exercise DVDs, the first four seasons of Roseanne, vintage books, a stability ball and a stethoscope (a gift!) among other things. However I am pretty excited for the two purchases I made today (after promising to go on an Amazon moratorium last night, of course!). Anyway... First up is Durham's Queen's Delight (insert joke here)... Continue reading

First I apologize for the crappy picture above, I got so excited with actually eating them that I failed to take any workable photos of the delicious chickpea tacos. This is one of my favorite recipes and it is so easy that you could easily make this on any weeknight. Pair it with some organic tortilla chips and perhaps a beer and you have yourself a filling, delicious and easy meal! Ingredients: 1 Can (15 oz) of Garbanzo Beans (preferably low-sodium) 1/2 Medium White Onion Tortillas/Taco Shells (your preference, I used the Archer Farms whole wheat tortillas) 1 TBS of... I've been using the Clarisonic Mia for about a month now and feel like I'm ready to offer my preliminary review! My skin has always been somewhat of a struggle for me, while I certainly (and fortunately) have not had to deal with major acne problems I found myself constantly dealing with minor breakouts, especially around my jaw-line. I have been blessed with oily skin (it has taken me a long time to see that as a blessing) and because of that am often the victim of annoying and gross whiteheads. I've cycled through many a cleansing routine, from the... Continue reading

Upper-body strength has always been something of a struggle for me. I consider getting through 10 consecutive push-ups a major victory. Perhaps it's due to having been cursed blessed with my mother's tiny wrists or the fact that I've never consistently worked an upper-body routine but either way, I'm pretty weak from the waist up. In an effort to increase my musculature in 2013, I recently purchased one of those door-frame pull up bars, specifically one made by Iron Gym. It took about 20 minutes to put together and, with some trepidation, I decided to give it a little test... Continue reading

Music is an essential part of my cardio routine. There is nothing more heartbreaking than pulling up to the gym only to realize that you left your MP3 player on the kitchen table! I don't know how people workout without listening to music, but trust me those people must be crazy exist. Like most Geminis however, I cycle through obsessions relatively quickly, therefore I usually update my workout playlist at least once a week if not more, however here are the songs that are currently pushing me to keep going on the treadmill: Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding || I... Continue reading

I had heard about the benefits of Tabata Training a few months ago and after doing some research came across a DVD by Amy Dixon called Breathless Body. For those unfamiliar, Tabata training is a form of HIIT (high-intensity interval training) which is built on the premise of doing 20 seconds of intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest, which is then repeated 8 times for 1 cycle. Breathless Body is composed of 8 cycles, yes that means you are doing sixty-four drills at 20 seconds each full force. Needless to say, it is exhausting! The first time I... Continue reading

There's nothing like a new year to inspire some new gear, and when I saw these Brooks Adrenaline GTS 11 running shoes on HauteLook for $22.00, yes TWENTY-TWO DOLLARS for Brooks (!!!!), I knew I had to get them! I got the last pair available and they just came today! I took them on their inaugural run at the not as crowded as I feared gym today. As with most new shoes my feet are feeling a little gnarly but I'm sure these will be broken in in no time. Continue reading

For both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner I made a Quinoa Salad and I'm happy to say it was a huge hit with both crowds. This is a great main course dish for non-meat eaters as the quinoa is both filling and high in protein, and with the rich flavors of the dried cranberries, walnuts and apple it truly captures all the flavors of the season. I toasted my walnuts in a dry-skillet (and let them cool) before I added them to the salad. Please note that this recipe is an adapted version of one I discovered on FineCooking.com. Ingredients: 1-1/2... Continue reading
