A funny thing happened on the next part of the journey in that we slipped into a "crossing the state of Texas time warp" where the GPS and MapQuest time to destination no longer worked and by midnight, after 14 hours of road trip and 6 hours still to Marfa, we decided to stay at a Comfort Suites in Fredricksberg Texas (other side of San Antonio). It was here that Rich seemed to become violently ill with some type of gastric virus that he attributed to too much stay awake junk food since nobody else fell ill. Continue reading

As we walked down the road a bit we passed an old building with a mural of a man on the side. Lou stopped in her tracks and said, “That’s my husband Jon, God I miss him.” Jon died almost 40 years ago yet there he was staring down and he and Lou were having a moment. It’s nice to know that a love like theirs...... Continue reading

The event was fabulous and packed to capacity. It was as much a musical performance by the trio of Tom Sancton, Barry Martyn & Fred Lynne as it was a lecture. Tom’s clarinet playing is just as smooth and sweet as it gets, he learned from the best. Barry Martyn is not only a great drummer and singer; he is an entertainer that plays the crowd even while he lectures Continue reading

I realized in that moment that this Saints Super Bowl win was much bigger than football, this was about an underdog city coming back and being cheered on by an entire nation. We truly are America’s team, maybe the worlds, Miracles do happen! Who Dat! Continue reading

I apologize to Bill and explained that mom and I had discussed not doing that. He smiles and says, “no apology, it would not be your mother if she did not do that, it’s the great part about her, she believes in Rockmore and advocates for him.” ........You learn something new every day – especially not to apologize for your mom if she did not ask you to Continue reading

Without doubt, the most interesting and awkward moment of the visit was provided by Noel Rockmore and his large 34X58 inch oil, Leda & the Swan, where it was considered more acceptable to depict a woman in the act of copulation with a swan than with a man. Continue reading

We ended this day with a lovely dinner with one of Rockmore’s New Orleans friends from the mid 60s through the 80’s. This person had just been one of the French Quarterites that lived in the village that was Rockmore’s domain. He had arrived from England and made his way at first as a teacher and then as a writer. He was enthralled and captivated by the Jazz music scene and did a book on George Lewis (jazz musician) which gave us the best insight into Bill Russell (jazz historian and favorite subject of Rockmore). He also did an excellent... Continue reading
