I highly doubt your dentist spends the weekend drilling cavities for free. They might attend a conference now and then but nothing like what developers expect from one another. Do we ever get a break? Just because one prefers learning on the job during business hours instead of sacrificing weekends coding up video games no one will ever see doesn't mean they're bad developers. In fact, they may just be smarter because they found a way to get paid to learn.
