Not an opinion but, rather, a clarification, based on the following facts: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is a political organization comprised of 57 members, a "collective voice of the Muslim world". The Organization was established on September 25th, 1969 as a result of the "criminal arson of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem"** (Excerpts are taken from OIC official Web site). Although Article 2 of the OIC's charter reads that "Member States are sovereign, independent and equal in rights and obligations", one of the 57 members is 'Palestine' which is not a state. Most OIC members are Muslim states, but some, especially in West Africa, are - though with large Muslim populations - not necessarily Muslim majority countries. A few countries with significant Muslim populations, however, such as Russia and Thailand, sit only as Observer States, while others, such as India, which has the world's third largest Muslim population (about 10% of the world's Muslim population), is being blocked from joining (by political rival Pakistan). In May 1979, following its Camp David and peace agreement signings with Israel, Egypt - one of the most populous Muslim countries (population of over 82 million) was suspended from the organization (5 years later it was re-admitted). Human Rights Watch - an international non-governmental organization that conducts research and advocacy on human rights - says that OIC has "fought doggedly" and successfully within the United Nations Human Rights Council to shield OIC member states from criticism, except when it comes to criticism of Israel. For example, when independent experts reported violations of human rights in the 2006 Lebanon War, "state after state from the OIC took the floor to denounce the experts for daring to look beyond Israeli violations to discuss Hezbollah's as well." Human Rights Watch is further concerned by OIC's apparent unwillingness to recognize as terrorism acts that serve causes endorsed by their member states. In a meeting in Malaysia in April 2002, OIC delegates rejected any description of the Palestinian fight with Israel as terrorism. Their declaration was explicit: "We reject any attempt to link terrorism to the struggle of the Palestinian people in the exercise of their inalienable right to establish their independent state with Al-Quds Al-Shrif (Jerusalem) as its capital." In fact, at the outset of the meeting, the OIC countries signed a statement praising the Palestinians and their "blessed intifada." The word terrorism was restricted to describe Israel, whom they condemned for "state terrorism" in their war with the Palestinian people. ** On Aug. 21, 1969, an Australian Christian named Denis Michael Rohan set fire to the podium of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Israel arrested and tried the mentally deranged arsonist.
