Try This At Home To make a small room look larger, choose a light-color paint and select furnishings in the same color family. Or, you can paint some of the furniture to match the walls. Consider a pale celery green on the wall behind this console, to create a grander sense in the room. To highlight the console, choose a complement of this yellow-green, which might be in a soft pink-violet family. Light affects color dramatically. Fluorescent light tends to be cool lighting and brings out more green or blue in a color. Incandescent light — light bulbs — brings... Continue reading

Spring Things! Is it coincidence that National Decorating Month and Spring just happen to occur at the same moment? We think not. RSH Butterfly Clips Wiki explains it in this (borrr-ing!) way: Spring fever is a term applied to several sets of physical and psychological symptoms associated with the arrival of spring. In general it refers to an increase in energy, vitality and particularly sexual appetite, often particularly strong in those suffering from light deprivation and thus experiencing lows during the winter months. It is this sense that inspires the use of the term as a title for several o... Continue reading

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC) has a don't-miss exhibit through 5/27 titled, "Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity," that looks at the role of fashion and design in the works of Impressionist masters, such as Manet, Tissot, Monet, and Renoir (and many others). Paintings are exhibited alongside period costumes, accessories, fashion plates, and photographs, highlighting the relationship between fashion, accessories, and art in the mid-and late 19th century, when Paris emerged as the fashion capital of the world. Does art mimic life or is it the other way around? WSJ comments on the exhibit with Five Fun Facts about Fashion in... Continue reading

I don't know about you, but just about now, my heart starts longing for the beach. This North Texas winter has been so mild and nice, especially considering what other parts of the country have suffered, that I have no business pining away for the summer ... which will inevitably be very hot and suddenly upon us! Still, the thought of sun and sand is a constant in my heart... If you still have little ones at home, what better baby sitter is there than the beach? And if you're missing your college students or grads, there's no better draw... Continue reading

Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is set out to expose the essence or identity of a subject through eliminating all non-essential forms, features or concepts. Thanks, wiki. What? In words that make more sense, minimalist could describe a girl I knew years ago. She was stunning, and never wore makeup. She wore the world's plainest clothes. Naturally platinum hair pulled back in a thick pony tail, away from her face. It all worked for her; she turned every head in the room. But at 17, we could... Continue reading

Cuz I'm really not. By that I mean ~ I definitely do appreciate her gift, but I doubt I've ever seen a whole show. Imagine my surprise when I started receiving -- without having ordered -- her monthly magazine. I hardly look through it. But this month, I have stopped on several articles, and it's really got some interesting pages this month! Of interest here ~ Oprah is re-doing her main home. Oprah's had many lovely homes (palaces & mansions!), and in various stages of her success, she's done each home to the absolute finest in last detail, spending a... Continue reading

What's beauty, anyway? It's in the eyes of the beholder, sure. Is that just another way of saying something hasn't met the standards of classic beauty? I'm sure you've heard that even infants will fixate on a particularly beautiful face. We are drawn to what is beautiful. Why? Are there certain proportions, certain lines, certain colors, colors together? Is it a smile? What about in the case of a building? A car? Of course a famous curiosity would be art. Few people realize Picasso was a fine portraitist before his cubist periods. Gustav Klimt -- look into his artistic evolution.... Continue reading

I posted a couple tweets on our FB page (RSH Catalog) this past week about Downton Abbey, the Masterpiece Theater series now in its 3rd season. Great fun, and great fun seeing how far we've come ... and they've come. For one thing, when the series began, they had to 'grow accustomed' to electric lights (and, having lived in Britain, I can tell you that they're still not up to speed with modern comforts as we Americans take for granted. IMHO). Well! Now that we are accustomed to electric lights, and so much more, exactly what else is there? After... Continue reading

When you think about styling, design, decorating, or fashion, the words come up: traditional, contemporary, modern, transitional, eclectic. These styles are fairly self-explanatory, except for 'modern' and 'contemporary'? What exactly are they and what distinguishes one from the other? 'Modern' refers to what we now know as 'mid-century,' or broadly speaking, styling from the 50s and 60s. Those years were pioneering years in so much of our American culture, and indeed the culture of the world. Think Beatles. For better or worse, they changed the world. in a design discussion, the world was changed as well. Stark, pure, bright colors... Continue reading

Look back a few posts, I'd mentioned Pantone's new direction of color for the year. Fashion, merchandising, design, decoration, architecture ~ everything around you falls into a color direction cycle. Had a chuckle as I stood in my bathroom this morning. This wall paper is almost 18 years old. As I start thinking about re-do for bathrooms (faucets, fixtures, & lighting need updating), I realized how much I still love this paper, and sure will hate to part with it. It's in good shape; would I have to get rid of it? No ~ contractor says he can work around... Continue reading

Come this time and temp of year, a girl's thoughts turn to sun and sand. Does it have to be hot to enjoy a beach? No, but it sure helps! I'm a southern gal, so my favorite beaches tend to be along the Gulf Coast -- Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. With a name like Sugar Beach, who could possibly resist? So, it's the week between Christmas and the New Year, and I stopped into our local retailer (who shall go unnamed, but that has a big red/white BULLSEYE for a logo) and what to my wondering eyes do appear? A... Continue reading
