To the parents: I know that this is one of the most difficult moment in your lives. You may be searching your heart and wondering why you have not been seen. Can’t they see your intentions? Don’t they know that you would never hurt your child? Why don’t they go... Continue reading

I was exhausted in the year 2000 I was working 6 and 7 days a week. My caseload was overwhelming and difficult. The crack epidemic was destroying generations of families. You had a mother, grandmother and other relatives all on crack. You had babies being born and being placed up... Continue reading

Summary In the beginning there is excitement that has not been tempered by the knowledge of what is real. The excitement brings hope and joy to the table. The excitement makes you think about all of the possibilities of work that you will be doing. The excitement makes you disregard... Continue reading

What I am very much aware of in CPS is that I would say “all” of the individuals that I encountered in my career had good intentions. All, including myself, at times would have a negative impact in spite of their intentions. So we have this law and this particular... Continue reading

Decisions and directions are always changing. There is a fluid nature in the work. There is a fluid nature in how and when you make decisions. I had to learn quickly how to make a decision and how to live with the decisions that I made. This code differs from... Continue reading

There is a knock on your door, standing there is a person with the police saying “I am with Child Protective Services I would like to interview you and your child:” These are dreaded words in certain communities. This is a parent’s nightmare. The parent may quietly let you in... Continue reading

The more cultural awareness that a worker had the more of a client’s humanity could be seen. However in 1997 there were not many individuals that had a broad experience. I think that their lack of awareness was also part of the time. It was a strange thing to observe... Continue reading

The more cultural awareness that a worker had the more of a client’s humanity could be seen. However in 1997 there were not many individuals that had a broad cultural experience. I think that their lack of awareness was also part of the time. It was a strange thing to observe of how you could make functional people less functional by stripping them of their cultural identity. In 1997 the world of CPS did not allow a lot of autonomy for either workers or parents. There was a cookie cutter approach to CPS and a one size fits all forms... Continue reading

This is my third excerpt from my book about Child Protective Services When the realization that I may be a part of the problem not just a part of the solution, I reflect on what is my intention. I know that I want to do minimum damage. If I were... Continue reading

The Beginning In thinking about my story the hardest thing to figure out is the why, how, who. It would be easy to give a one sentence answer to those questions. Why? Because I wanted to be of service. How? As a CPS worker. Who? To the family and children... Continue reading

This is the first post of my new blog. I am both excited and scared at the same time. Walking into the unknown is always a scary moment. Should I give in to the fear or march bravely forward. Maybe my first step should be to explain my new blog.... Continue reading

Download Romance 2 This is the first post in my book, A Gift From The Journey. I wrote this post as a response to an observation of a person who has a lot of drama in their life. I have been asked whether I think that stage two is boring. I find stage two to be peaceful. It is my belief that it is in Stage two where the real relationship starts. I hope that you enjoy the podcast. If you have any questions, let me know and I will answer them in a podcast. Continue reading

I sometimes wonder where are all of those random acts of kindness. I think that they are hiding. Or maybe I am not looking in the right place. I remember one of Oprah's shows where she was encouraging us "regular people" to have a random act of kindness. Would the world be a "better" place if we thought that being "kind" was just as important as being "rich", "beautiful" or any of the other status dreams that we have? In this world we would brag about how many kind acts that we did in a day. We would be competitive... Continue reading

I was given a Gift today by Dan who left a comment: "Dan said: Well, once, a philosopher (I forgot who exactly) said that a person cannot forgive unless she receives sincere apologies from the offender (or the person who did her wrong). I am a person who gets angry very fast and let go even faster. So I couldn't agree that one cannot forgive without apologies, but after I paid attention to what actually happens during that forgiveness process I realized that I actually never forgave those people, letting go is different from forgiveness, the first time that I... I know that I have not written for awhile. Just busy with life. I also did not have anything new to really write about. I recently had a conversation with a friend that got me thinking about something new. The conversation was short and like many conversations it followed many streams of thought. My friend has recently retired and she was planning the new phase of her life. If any of you have read any of my other posts I usually refer to life in its various seasons. There is the spring season full of promise and growth, the summer... Continue reading

I have been watching the news and observing how Congress is behaving. I have also been observing the different scandals that have been erupting. It is curious to me because a lot of these scandals are done by those in power. There has been movement from those that are looking for consensus in the political arena to those that just want power. Whether this is personal power, political power, financial power there is something in common with those that are in the pursuit of power. There is the assumption that "they" hold the answers. There is also a one up... Continue reading

Wouldn't it be great if politics did not exist. If the underbelly of society, culture, government, jobs and family did not involve the back door working of the game. Now I say this understanding that it is a dream of mine that will never be realized. Politics are involved in every aspect of human nature. It would be naive of me to believe that I just had to be a hard working individual, keep my nose clean and that I would somehow be rewarded for being a good "Girl Scout" . Alas politics is even in the bedroom you have to be... Continue reading

I have been in a transition this year. I have three friends that visit me whenever I am in a transition. Woe is Me, Life Sucks and Why Me Lord. Now these friends and I have very long conversations with each other. They are mostly telling me about what not to do or what I can't do or why even try. One of the first signs that they are visiting is that I start losing interest in people, places and things. Matter fact, the most important thing that they tell me is that I can't let anyone know that they... Continue reading

When I was in my summer season of life I interviewed with IBM for a sales position. One of the questions that I was asked was "what is the difference between rejection and refusal". My response was that rejection was something that was personal and refusal was just not wanting what was being offered. I think that it is easy to confuse the two in life because both may make you feel bad. Your self esteem takes a blow. For a minute, lets take a look at the difference between the two. If I tell you no and you believe... Continue reading

I recently had a conversation with someone who told me that finding a man was very difficult. What I said to her was that finding a man is easy, when you are ready. The key to that statement is "when you are ready". I have often found that when I am longing for a relationship or when I have thought that I would never be in a relationship again. It was me that was preventing me from being in a relationship. Sometimes, my blocking myself came from my own romantic muses of what a "relationship" should look like or what... Continue reading
