February is Westminster Kennel Club month for anyone who breeds, exhibits or owns purebred dogs. It is THE celebration of our passion, the two nights a year that we get our World Series, our Kentucky Derby, our Super Bowl. It is now also the beginning of "slam the purebred breeder"... I've been part of a discussion on Facebook in the last couple of days regarding docking tails on one of the breeds I raise, show and love - Pembroke Welsh Corgis. Both of my breeds have docked tails. One much shorter than the other, but both docked. This isn't going... Continue reading

If the AR activist's have their way - this Beauty wouldn't be here - Clarken Ziyadah Dangerous Beauty at 12 weeks old. There has been quite an uproar in the last couple of days about a tee shirt being sold on an internet store - it's pretty heinous - "Save... Continue reading

Our beautiful Sussex Spaniel puppies went to their new homes last week. I usually place them a little later, but these were big, bold, smart, active puppies and they were ready to be in their forever homes. This was our first litter of Sussex. They were quite an adventure -... Continue reading

I stopped writing for a few months. All the usual stuff, busy with work, busy with clubs, busy, busy, busy, period. On December 22 we had a lovely new addition to our family, in fact 7 new additions! Our darling Sussex Spaniel, Gidget - Ziyadah Clarken Making Waves, had her... Continue reading

I blog a lot about what makes me angry and what concerns me. I decided I needed to compose a positive entry tonight. Tonight's blog is about animals and humans and why we care for each other. I grew up in the '50's. It was a time of burgeoning suburbs,... Continue reading
While that may be true in CA, it's not elsewhere. I'm on Pet-Law and actually started my own list because of the serious right lean on that list. However, HumaneWatch.org can't be called anything but conservative as is BlueDog. I don't mean to generalize, but the vast majority of those who I've posted with on the anti side are hard core right leaning folks. I also saw and continue to see a lot of those protesting AR meetings along side our "friends" the Tea Party. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one Laura.
Update on the Goldfish Lady - they commuted her sentence and she's off the bracelet - only has to do community service now. WOW - how lenient :-(
Yes, I do think e-collars will be outlawed, or at least they'll try. There are already people calling for it in the UK, land of the AR fanatic.

Tonight's blog is a little bit of a mish mash. There have been several things in the last few days that have upset me. Obviously, it's easy to see I get tweaked fairly easily if anyone has read my other blogs. Let's start with the Governor of MA signing the... Continue reading

In general, most staunch animal welfare anti animal rights supporters are conservatives, but there are a few of us who are progressives politically and do not support animal rights. We are few and far between, but we do indeed exist. It can be problematic to be pro animal welfare and... Continue reading

At this year's Westminster Kennel Club dog show in Madison Square Garden, right in the middle of Best in Show, a pair PETA activists ran into the show ring and proudly waived signs stating "Mutts Rule" and "Breeders Kill Shelter Dogs Chances". They were quickly and quietly escorted from the... Continue reading

At a recent National 4-H conference, the HSUS somehow wangled a special session where they were able to not only hand out a brochure about "humane" treatment of farm animals, they also got to speak to the 4-H kids. There is something just wrong about that on so many levels.... Continue reading

The UK has done it again. I'm not going to bore anyone by publishing the entire law, but a new law in England requires parental consent for the purchase of ANY animal from a pet store for any minor. Okay, at first glance this seems reasonable. I actually did this... Continue reading

Recently the state of MA passed a law making it illegal to have a licensed veterinarian perform a simple procedure often called "debarking". It's also called bark softening (a more correct term) or devocalization. Bark softening is a procedure that takes very little time to perform when done correctly and... Continue reading

In my usual perusal of online news and MSNBC (I admit it, I'm an MSNBC junky) I came across the news that Bob (spay and neuter them) Barker has donated 2.5 million dollars to PETA for the building of their new offices in Los Angeles. I must admit - I... Continue reading

I read an article today online about a couple who are members of a religious group in Oregon. This group eschews traditional medical treatment and believes in laying on of hands and prayer for healing. I would never and will never condemn someone for their beliefs. HOWEVER, and this is... During a recent ongoing discussion (I use the term loosely) with several rather rabid animal rights supporters, I was accused of being less than bright, of faulty logic, of misunderstanding the term speciesism, of supporting “rape” of animals by humans while at the same time opposing it, among other things.... Well, that's the point, though Liz. I think there's room for everyone. If it's wrong to breed a litter of Pems, it's wrong to import a dog - it's not "wrong" to do either! Thank heavens you "imported" Sophie! Elvis would be devastated without her!

I walked into a local bank today and there were posters advertising an upcoming fundraiser for our local shelter. I noticed that the dogs pictured weren't any dogs at our shelter, but even more curious was that under each pictures was a caption proclaiming the "mix" of that dog -... Continue reading

A friend told me today that you can't argue with stupid - it's a good message. Of course, I still do try to argue with stupid, I'm just stubborn that way. Recently, a new website was launched - humanewatch.org. I didn't post a link to it because I have some... Continue reading

Sometime in the last twenty years, words have changed meaning. I don’t understand that. I know times change, and I swore I’d never say “When I was a girl…” when I was a girl. But words have meaning and I’m tired of the perversion of them. Let’s start with adoption.... Continue reading

I've already received some excellent feedback and I appreciate it. I thought I'd share a little about who I am and who I am not. This blog will never be about "tea parties", right wing agendas, gun rights, or how the federal government is out to get us. I am... Continue reading
Sheila - I will be discussing Pete Singer and Gary Y, as well as Steve Hindi - SHARK, the beneficiary of Bob Barker's largesse.
