Jude has recently shown an interest in learning how to sew! We came up with this fun little project which just happens to make a fabulous valentine gift. I must admit, crafting with a creative and head strong kid can be a serious lesson in collaboration and patience. I'm so... Continue reading

This easy craft makes a great last minute gift! With just a few affordable supplies and very little time (seriously like ten minutes!) you can create these rad wire and stone rings and pendants. I love taking requests for handmade gifts. This year my littlest sister wanted chunky, slouchy, leg warmers and I was more than happy to knit them up. Not only did they turn out really cute, but they were a breeze to knit up. I thought I'd share this easy pattern... Continue reading

I've been on a major self-help kick lately. I blame my podcast addiction. I'm one of those grown-ups who misses school and podcasts have helped fill that longing for sitting in a lecture hall. It all started when a friend recommended Magic Lessons. I've got to be honest, Elizabeth Gilbert... Continue reading

2015 sure went by in a flash! My baby turned one and my first baby became a kindergartener! I experienced a huge shift in contributor work (I went from tons, too much really, to a manageable amount). The blog didn't see the attention it deserved last year, and I have... Continue reading

Hi Susan, Im sorry I didnt get back to you sooner, the holidays are such a busy time! My mother made that cowl without a pattern. It is simply knit straight in garter and then seamed. She used a chunky yarn but to match the hat in worsted you and simply cast on enough stitches to make it about 8 inches wide and knit until it is about 17 inches long. Happy knitting and thanks for reading! - Carla small + friendly: maker and mama
Every year at Christmas my family tries to do something nice for a family in need. This year I partnered with GoFundMe to take that kind gesture to the next level. In October our neighboring county suffered one of the most devastating wildfires in California's history. I found one family... Continue reading

I love giving handmade gifts. I decided special free printable handmade gift tags were in order, lest someone thinks I simply bought them a present. Or worse still, dares to give a less than thrilled reaction. These pretty tags have a great sense of humor. I think my favorite one... Continue reading

I got such wonderful response from my first knit hat pattern, I decided to write another one! This hat starts the same way, but the ribbing goes all the way to the top. It is super stretching and can be worn cuffed or slouchy. This pattern is written for a... Continue reading

The wants: they travel in the air, through the net, and into the mailbox. Catalogues, pinterest boards, ads, instagram accounts, they all contribute to a false feeling of need. A desire for more: more clothes, more travel, more toys, more time to create. The wants hit our house hard and... Continue reading
