What a wonderful foundation you were given to build your life upon! Have you ever returned to that old church to listen once more to the beautiful music?

We love Nova Natural! So many wonderful products. We keep their catalogs on hand for the children to look through like a "magazine". :) Thank you so much!

I remember watching in astonishment as a hawk swooped in and carried off one our hens -- mere feet from where we were standing! As you said, it was sad, yet awe-inspiring too! I do believe that it is good and healthy for our children to be immersed in the natural cycle (and reality) of life and death. Those early experiences have given me a perspective that not all city-raised folk seem to have. I'm grateful for it.

I'm not certain if it is, but that stool looks similar to the one made my Elves and Angels: http://elvesandangels.com/collections/growing-ride-on/products/sturdy-stool I know IKEA also sells a wooden step stool that is sturdy and made of solid wood. :)

Gypsy, that's a great idea! I'll bet it would make a lovely quiche crust. Kay and Jodean, it's so wonderful to learn from our grandmas isn't it? They have so much wisdom and sense that we seem to have lost in our "enlightened" modern age. This settles it! I'm gonna have to get me some lard! :)

P.S. Could lard be substituted for shortening in pie crusts? I've used coconut oil that way. P.P.S. A thought on those wonderful oatcakes from yesterday: unless circles are a much-loved shape, you could cut them into squares (or triangles?) with a pizza cutter. Saves a lot of time! :)

Haha! We were just discussing how any meal is better with bacon. :) (We had potato + bacon soup for dinner last night, inspired by your post yesterday...YUM!) So sorry to hear of your coconut loss...but happy for you that you've found an excellent substitute -- and one you can supply yourselves! (As, I imagine coconuts don't grow in Maine.) ;) I wonder if this popcorn recipe could be made even more decadent with a bit of maple syrup added in? Sort of a "backwoods kettle corn" idea? Time to experiment!!
