Ford lost that election because Reagan ran against him for the GOP nomination. After having to defend himself against someone in his own party, he was pretty battered going into the general election. Unless a Dem or strong independent challenges Obama, the same thing probably won't happen.
Unemployment projected at 7.7% in November 2012, highest during a presidential election since 1976
It's a case of good news/bad news, economy style, for President Obama. The unemployment rate will be down to 7.7% when voters go to the polls in November 2012 to pick the next president, a major improvement from last month's 8.9% and far from the 10.1% high it reached in late 2009, according t...
“The city should be seeking the truth rather than trying to carve out areas of secrecy,” said James Spertus, who represents Rizzo."
mmmm....isn't that how this whole thing started?
Bell criminal hearings: Attorneys blocked from questioning former city attorney
Defense lawyers grew frustrated Monday after being prohibited from questioning Bell’s former city attorney about conversations he had with their clients. Attorneys representing current and former Bell officials accused of misappropriating funds were stopped numerous times in the middle of cross-...
His letter to the parole board is his position. Tough on crime...until it's one of your own.
Villaraigosa won't say if he backs Schwarzenegger's decision to cut prison time for Nuñez's son
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa sidestepped questions on Wednesday from reporters who asked if he agreed with former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s recent decision to reduce the prison sentence of 21-year-old Esteban Nuñez, son of former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez. Villaraigosa called t...
Keep in mind prop 13 came about because increased property taxes were was causing people with fixed incomes to lose their homes. The outrage from this was the impetus of the Jarvis-Gann initiative known as prop 13. It sounds like a great idea to make the the tax playing field more even, but get set for a rough ride as reassessed homes go into foreclosure making for an already difficult housing market worse.
Gov. Jerry Brown talks Prop. 13 [Updated]
On his first full day on the job, Gov. Jerry Brown walked right up to the third rail of California politics. As he headed into a meeting with local government officials, he talked about how the state response to Proposition 13's limitations on property-tax rates have contributed to the state's...
Glad it never rains in Southern California.
High winds, cold temperatures will be followed by rain moving in on Saturday
An evening of high winds and cold weather was followed by more of the same Thursday morning, with temperatures expected to dip even lower Friday before more rain hits the region this weekend. High wind gusts overnight hit 61 mph in Glendale and 90 mph in Angeles National Forest, said National...
L3 is a net neutrality issue because of Comcast's financial incentives to protect it's own programming offerings. If consumers find it less expensive to use Netflix than to upgrade their Comcast subscriptions to get movies online, putting restrictions on L3 represents less a bandwidth issue and more an anti-competitive issue. As mergers continue in the online arena, this becomes increasingly important given that cable companies have neighborhood monopolies.
Filling in the blanks on the FCC's Net neutrality proposal [Updated]
The Federal Communications Commission isn't releasing details of Chairman Julius Genachowski's latest proposal for Net neutrality rules, but staffers provided a couple of revealing clues Wednesday. First, the proposal doesn't back away from any of the six principles Genachowski laid out in his ...
I think it's a little unfair to compare it to Broadcast News because most young movie viewers probably aren't event aware of the film so for them Morning Glory will be a new experience. I noticed no one is even mentioning Network with Peter Finch and Faye Dunaway (although when Broadcast News came out there were probably similar comparisons). I like the trailers and, honestly, I could use a little fluff in my life nowadays.
Film critics on 'Morning Glory': Hollywood has a bad case of Knock Off Fever
When my 12-year-old asked me last week if he could see "Due Date," I told him I'd be happy to take him one night, but only after he'd prepped himself for the experience by watching "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." As virtually every critic in America took note of in their reviews last weekend...
We canceled our cable a month ago but kept our phone and internet with the same provider. Movie channels are more important to us than sports but not as important as rent. Sigh... Big Lots sells bins of movies for $3-5. Maybe we'll see 'Glee' in there in a year or so.
Fox sports channels and FX dropped from Dish Network
In an increasingly contentious battle over price hikes, News Corp.'s Fox pulled several of its cable channels -- including 19 regional sports channels -- from satellite broadcaster Dish Networks early Friday morning. The channels included in the blackout were FX, National Geographic Channel and ...
I'm actually kind of looking forward to it. I liked the original (John Wayne doing one-handed reloads on a pair of rifles while riding a horse rocked), but it'll be interesting to see what this new version brings to the screen.
A few questions about the Coen brothers' new 'True Grit' trailer
A few questions about the new trailer for the Coen brothers' movie "True Grit," due around Christmas from Paramount: The trailer gives us hangings, rifle shots, a loving look at a long-neck revolver and some gorgeous glimpses of horsemen silhouetted against the darkened sky. Is this the Coen ...

The Dry Garden: Predictions of La Niña winter
Autumn and early winter are traditionally considered planting season in Southern California because nature can be expected to cooperate. As days shorten and rains come, seeds germinate, newly transplanted saplings deepen their roots and established plants awaken from dormancy. Yet not all year...

White Sox reportedly win claim on Manny Ramirez
Has a team stepped up and claimed Manny Ramirez? And if so, what do the Dodgers do now? ESPN’s Jayson Stark has tweeted the White Sox were awarded the claim. Another report from mlb.com’s T.R. Sullivan said the Rangers put in a claim but lost out to another team, presumably the White Sox. T...
Go Gals! The only thing I'm surprised about is that there weren't already female linemen/women.
Men or women...definitely dangerous work and if this is a typical training class, there was probably a 75% dropout rate (which is average for men or women).
Way to go those who finished and be safe out there!
Don't bag on the ladies, please! When it's raining with the wind blowing and your power goes out, they're the one's who'll be out there risking it all to get your cable back on (your box runs on electricity...remember?)!
First class of women set to be certified as utility linemen
In a yard of 35-foot utility poles in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday, 22 women went through the final certification tests in the first all-female utility lineman class at Los Angeles Trade Technical College. The school has offered the class since 2008, but only two women enrolled in that time...

Norton Simon Museum sends off its geese guests
The sculpture garden at Pasadena’s Norton Simon Museum looks like a Monet painting brought to life. With its serene pond, lush greenery and delicate flowers, the garden is a celebrated museum attraction and a natural draw for visitors. Especially the geese. Last May, a gaggle of Canada gee...
