Awhile ago, I wrote about the lessons this year has taught me. As I entered my 30th year of life on Sunday, June 9th, it felt right to think about and share some of the stuff I’ve learned in life so far, in no particular order. These are probs nothing... Continue reading

I admit it: every year, I enter to win the HGTV Dream Home. They’re always located in an interesting place, executed with thoughtful & locally-inspired design, and full of unique details. This year, there's also a Smart Home! A few weeks ago, I was really excited to be invited to... Continue reading

I've always been a fan of West Elm, but I especially love the way they've made a point of working with independent artists and artisans lately. Whether this comes from a genuine love for craft, is a play to make a giant company feel more friendly, or a little of... Continue reading

This past weekend, I got to do something CRAZY fun. But first, a little back story. Ever since I started getting to do a little design work in my job several years ago, I've been pretty obsessed with Pantone. You might remember the roundup I did when they announced the... Continue reading

That’s my grandmother above, enjoying a nice day on the porch in her playsuit. Isn’t she a knockout? Now that warm days are here again (both in NYC and in my hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, from where I'm happily posting this), I’m looking forward to spending a lot of time... Continue reading

I was at Ikea for the second time in two weeks (ugh!) and came across the super-zany rug below. I didn't buy it, because it doesn't really have a place in my small apartment, but if I had a beach house, this would definitely go in it! It's only $39.99,... Continue reading

CHANGE. It’s hard for most people, and historically, it’s been especially hard for me. But it’s also the only way we move forward, and I’m slowly learning that good things do often follow that nervous, unsettled, what’s-going-to-happen-next feeling. Continue reading

I used to be a HEAVY sleeper. Just ask my mom - I'd yell, roll around, mumble incoherently, and when awoken, ask some question that seemed to make sense in the context of whatever dream I was having, but in actuality sounded like total gibberish that I later giggled about.... Continue reading

Hayley - great question! Because I'm on the second floor of an apartment building, I didn't worry at all about what the shade looks like from the back. It's not really a pretty sight! If I were going to do this in a kitchen, like you mentioned, I might try using a thin fabric on the back to cover the edges of the folded fabric. Janet - Another good question! I didn't have any trouble with the problem you mentioned...is the fabric heavy? Or perhaps it's pulled too tight across the shade?
Hi DPL! I think I definitely would do MUCH thinner coats than I did. If the shoes had been lighter then I also would've tried this with actual leather paint - because they started out red, I wanted to make sure I used something that would really cover. I would totally do this again, but It definitely depends on the type of shoe. The loafers, for example, crease a lot when walking and require a lot of flexibility...a shoe like a strappy heel sounds like it would fare much better. I'm so glad you tried this!

As you've probably noticed, I haven't posted anything here since the end of 2012. The truth is, I'm feeling a little bit, well, stuck. The start of 2013 has brought with it lots of change, much of it uncomfortable and, if I'm honest, unwelcome. When I look back to when... Continue reading

Living in a pretty small space in NYC (what my family might call 'tee-ninesy'), I'm always on the lookout for ways to maximize space in my current place and ideas for what I'd do if (fingers crossed) I'm lucky enough to have more square footage in my next one. House... Continue reading
