Republicans in the Florida legislature and Rick Scott have even less reasons to "just say no" to Medicaid expansion. The costs of expansion are even less than previously thought: New figures, in fact, show that the cost to the states of expanding Medicaid is less than previously thought. In February,... While some are just talking about whether or not fracking in Florida is a good idea (it's not), and legislators debate the issue, apparently an oil company from Texas has just gone ahead and done it here anyway, regardless of what anyone wants or thinks. Can we count on our... Continue reading

He hides his investments from Floridians in a "blind trust." He deleted transition emails that should have been public records even before he was sworn into office. He put up a farce of a transparency website called Project Sunburst. He made FOIA requests cost and time prohibitive. Now Rick Scott... Continue reading

The Florida legislature sunk to a new low today by passing a bill that would shield nursing home investors from lawsuits stemming from abuse and neglect. If Rick Scott signs the bill, he'll be giving a free pass to something the industry already has a history of in Florida. It... Continue reading

In the past, Rick Scott favored Arizona's strict "papers please" immigration laws, he vetoed a bill that would have allowed children of illegal immigrants to get temporary Florida driver's licenses, and members of his staff recently angered his top campaign fundraiser who left his campaign after they made ethnic and... It looks as though the problems at Typepad, in wake of their DDoS attack, have been fixed and the blog seems to be back up. I'm working on a backlog of posts, and with fingers crossed I'll try to post as many that are still current news. However, some minor... Continue reading

If you're a regular reader of Beach Peanuts, you're aware that the blog has been down for the most part since last Friday. This is due to an ongoing DDoS attack on TypePad and is beyond my control. Problems began on Thursday and I haven't been able to gain access... Continue reading

Today Rick Scott was asked again if he thought the legislature should focus on Medicaid expansion, and again he refused to answer the question. He's content to ignore the fact that there will be more and more stories like this one, just as the legislature is. People are dying in... Continue reading

"Hey, Who's In Charge Here Anyway?" Rep. Dennis Ross (R-eally Sorry-I-Keep-Apologizing-But-Never-Change-My-Behavior-FL) demonstrated this week why few Republicans will participate at town halls back home during their numerous recesses that they claim they "need" because they have to do important work back home: They're confronted by voters. Another reason Republicans aren't... Continue reading

We already know that Florida's Republican lawmakers could care less if low income Floridians die without the health care they would have access to if the legislature had allowed Medicaid expansion. After all, Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford has proudly bragged about blocking it, even though his own family befitted... Continue reading

If you're one of those who are waiting for the other voter suppression shoe to drop even though Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner halted Rick Scott's most recent voter purge, this could be it: A victory in the civil rights battle for voting was registered in Florida last week... As Rick Scott touts his support for tuition breaks for veterans and unveils a new campaign video to tell how lucky he was to get ahead in life thanks to a GI bill, his new found support for veterans just ahead of the election isn't really all that surprising. He's... Continue reading

Really? That's interesting, considering that the open enrollment period for ACA ended in March. Since Rick Scott and the legislature refuse to expand Medicaid, perhaps you would be better served taking those complaints up with them. They are responsible for that coverage gap, not the ACA.
The bill not only would expand the Stand Your Ground law in Florida to include firing warning shots, but would allow those who have used SYG to expunge their records if they're later found innocent: An open government watchdog is asking Gov. Rick Scott to veto a bill that would... Continue reading

Who Are You Going To Believe, The GOP Or Your Lying Eyes? Oh the hypocrisy. The religious right and their wing-nut pals are afraid the GOP will be powerless to resist the pull of Sheldon Adelson’s deep pockets and hold their 2016 convention in Las Vegas, but all that money... Continue reading

“To allow people to go into a riot while concealing a gun without a permit is the definition of insanity,” said Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri. “The bill is crazy. It’s absurd.” And yet the Florida House approved a bill to do just that. Because what Florida law enforcement wants... Continue reading

If you've paid attention to the new and improved voter suppression tactics in Florida, especially since Rick Scott bought the governors office, you probably remained skeptical when his beer lobbyist turned Secretary of State Ken Detzner halted the second voter purge recently, after the first one managed to remove legitimate... Republicans continued to claim they aren't conducting a War On Women by blocking even a debate on the Paycheck Fairness Act in the Senate. Senate Republicans voted unanimously on Wednesday to block debate from beginning on Democratic-led legislation aimed at narrowing the pay gap between men and women. The motion... Continue reading

A new nonpartisan study by Pew Charitable Trusts has concluded that states generally did a better job managing the 2012 election than in 2008. There was, however, one exception. Florida: The notable exception was Florida, which had the nation's 49th-longest wait times to vote. Average wait times swelled by 16... Continue reading

There's no bigger force on the right campaigning against the Affordable Care Act than Koch Industries and their counterparts, Americans For Prosperity, who have spent millions in a barrage against its implementation. Rick Scott isn't a big fan of facts. He's also not a fan of allowing the media to question him on the facts, so he avoids both. Now, even though the claim has been debunked by fact-checkers, his political committee "Let's Get To Work" is still running an ad that... Continue reading

Polls Say Mind The Gap Last year Rick Scott saw the writing on the wall, and for a nanosecond he claimed he changed his mind on Medicaid expansion. Then he never brought it up again. Republicans led by House Speaker Will Weatherford blocked it anyway, sending millions of tax dollars... Continue reading

When this year's legislative session began, Will Weatherford stated his and the Republican Party's true goal: Before the session began, House Speaker Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, said his goal was to help Scott "put points on the board" by passing popular legislation. You read that right. It's all about Rick... Continue reading

Republicans in Orange County are now outnumbered by Democratic and third party affiliation, where Latinos make up about a quarter of the electorate. In light of that, comments like this one made by Lew Oliver, the Chairman of the Orange County Republican Executive Committee, certainly won't improve those numbers: "The... Continue reading
