Today I drove 3.5 hours each way to race for just over an hour (11.3 km) in the Nail Can Hill Run. I did the same mad drive two years ago with a friend. We missed the start (let alone bib collection) but ran anyway because we'd gone all that... Continue reading

I could make smoothies but most of the time I don't feel like it. I prefer to just shake and chug. (1) This sounds as if it wouldn't work, but for me it does. 1 scoop plain Sun Warrior (it's raw vegan, in case that matters to you) protein powder... Continue reading

Why am I doing this old-fashioned blogging thing? Two reasons – one simple, one complicated. 1. Simple. I want to spare my friends and family from hearing all the boring-to-them, fascinating-to-me details of my running hobby and related interests (buying, eating, sleeping during the day). There's someone I'm friendly with... Continue reading

I made these but instead of homemade almond butter I used store-bought cashew butter and instead of oat flour I used fine cornmeal. Oh, and instead of coconut sugar I used brown sugar and instead of maple syrup I used coconut nectar (which isn't as nice as it sounds, incidentally).... Continue reading

To do – day before Buy any last-minute needs for race day, including Growling Dog energy drink, stuff from chemist (see other lists) & safety pins Charge iPod, Garmin & phone Cut & smooth toenails Shave legs (note: my... This is important because it was a great list and a big part of why I was having such a good time. Download Marathon playlist. Had it on shuffle (I like surprises). Continue reading

Marathon #3 is 10 weeks from today. Took a week (6 days) off after #2, partly to rest and regroup, partly because I was sick. I don't like not running. My body quickly relapses into sloth mode and my mind starts spiralling into blah. So I'm back on the Hanson... Continue reading

... get my hair cut with a fringe again ... get my hair cut too short for a ponytail again ... buy any more Aveda shampoos (they just don't get along with my hair) ... knowingly mess up my stomach by eating things with wheat in them ... don't go... Continue reading

Still riding a marathon high here. Right up to the night before, I wasn't sure about doing it. Training hasn't exactly been consistent – there have been whole weeks of next to nothing since the first marathon back in January – although recently I have been taking well to the... Continue reading

Loved today. Weather was glorious autumn perfection. Ran a marathon and met my goals: to enjoy it, to run every step (fast Gu sucking and drink gulping aside), to pace myself evenly, not to slam into the wall, and to finish under a certain time (not an impressive one but... Continue reading

Yurbuds. They do what they say they do. Also the sound is good. Toasted blue corn tortillas with pesto. Any meal. First good gluten-free spaghetti I've ever found (San Remo, boring but true). Glorious autumn weather after a blah summer. This (thanks to the end consumer). Training Hanson style. Sleep.... Continue reading

From And then you die by Michael Dibdin There were so many things about English speakers he didn't understand, like Ellen, his one-time American girlfriend asking him, 'Why are all the things I like either fattening or bad for me?' He'd shrugged and replied, 'Because you like the wrong things.'... Continue reading

Pertinent article by Dan Pallotta in the Harvard Business Review, 20 August 2010, found via this article in the Guardian (subtitled 'No pain no gain? Not if you want to get some real work done') Many of us have grown up thinking that if we are properly self-punishing then we... Continue reading

This is an excellent article about yoga for people with scoliosis. I have very mild scoliosis which makes certain poses (notably downward dog) difficult/impossible to do in the textbook way. Because I'm stubborn, crazy and easily psyched out, until I read this it never occurred to me that I don't... Continue reading

By Yishane Lee From the August 2004 issue of Runner's World Why do you run, when did you start? I began running on an everyday basis after I became a writer. As being a writer requires sitting at a desk for hours a day, without getting some exercise you'd quickly... Continue reading
