A Listed Life: To Muse & Amuse
From the red rocks of Utah, and the ocean of the wild west
Two writers curious about life, and exploring our world with questions and lists
Interests: We enjoy writing, reading, learning, and conversing with friends. We love challenging and being challenged. We pass time observing, participating, and trying to figure things out. We take breaks. To listen to music, cook, garden, walk, travel, decorate and day dream. One finds peace in the mountains, the other at the water's edge. We place a high value on laughter, paramount being the all out belly laugh.

Roger Ebert, journalist, author, film critic, died on Thursday after a long battle with cancer. You may not know who he was, or vaguely recognize his name.... Continue reading

"Spring shows what God can do with a drab and dirty world." ~ Rainer Maria Rilke I am soooooooo ready for spring! For tulips and daffodils. Warm breezes and sunlight with my morning coffee. For sandals and hummingbirds and journaling on the courtyard chaise. For the opening of the fresh... Continue reading

"The sounds of silence are a dim recollection now, like mystery, privacy and paying attention to one thing - or one person - at a time. " ~ Maureen Dowd I've kept this quote on my desk for months now, affirming what I've been feeling, yet unable to put into... Continue reading

“There are only two seasons -- winter and Baseball.” Bill Veeck I’ve also heard, there are two seasons, baseball and the void. The goal in the void is to get to baseball. Anyone who knows me knows I’m insane for baseball. It’s a life metaphor for me, poetry animated, passion... Continue reading

"You know you're getting old when the candles cost more than the cake." ~Bob Hope For the most part, I don't think a lot about getting old. When I do, though admittedly not with a lot of humor, I am usually pretty pragmatic about it. So pragmatic that I'm taken... Continue reading

“One of the things about democracy, or an open society, is that it’s an argument, it’s a constant argument and people are going always to be saying things you don’t like.” ~Salman Rushdie Above grammar aside, I liked this interview with Christiane Amanpour and Salman Rushdie. They converse about similarities... Continue reading

When eating bamboo sprouts, remember the man who planted them. ~Chinese Proverb I recently had a blog I pen recognized by WordPress editors with their Freshly Pressed distinction. For an unknown author contorting and creating through the frustrations and joys of writing, this was big doin’s. I couldn’t fully appreciate... Continue reading

"Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable." Kenneth Galbraith 1969 When it comes to politics, I waffle between outrage and despair, agreeing with Galbraith, I fear. So, I, for one, will not be watching the coming three-ring circuses, better... "It isn't the big pleasures that count the most. It's making the most of little ones." ~Jean Webster With all the hoopla of the Olympic games, the emphasis on medals won and records broken, it's easy to forget these words of wisdom. Not that I belittle the achievements (I've been... Continue reading

"You never know what is enough unless you know what is more than enough." ~ William Blake For as many times as I've asked myself and others, "When is enough enough?", I've never heard a response like Blake's. Wish I had. Makes so much sense. Unfortunatley, I've come to this... Continue reading

"All of us carry an inner perfectionist. (A critic, a cynic, a skeptic, a censor. Name it what you will.)" ~ Julia Cameron Cameron calls hers, Nigel. I've dubbed mine, Cruella. Cruella, my incessant inner critic. With her wild, streaked hair and dagger fingernails. Cruella delights in reminding me of... Continue reading

"The real heroes aren't the people doing things; the real heroes are the people NOTICING things, paying attention." By this definition, there are very few heroes among us. Those who dare to pay attention and name what they are noticing seem to be quickly marginalized. Maybe that's why Augustus, a... Continue reading

"Make me a list. I work better from a list." ~ Hubs It might be marginally true but I haven't seen much traction. "Each day comes bearing its own gifts. Untie the ribbons." - Ruth Ann Schabacker Having kept a gratitude journal for years now, this isn't exactly a novel idea for me. I usually can create a list of 10 "gifts" to be grateful for every day. Except when I don't feel... Continue reading

Lying in bed in a germ-i-fied state, I'm stunned. I rarely get sick. I've never had a flu shot and I don't use hand gel. I wash my hands with soap, keep them off my face and drink plenty of water. Done. Good to go. How did this happen? Then... Continue reading
