I'm a little late to the party on commenting on this but I'll add my two cents. I've brewed many batches of beer and 95% of them have been a success. Like multiple people have said, be clean. I will also add that if you don't want a skunky taste, don't use green or clear bottles. Use Amber glass.
UV light destroys the isohumulones of the hops and that's what makes beer skunky.
Our perfected beer was a honey pale ale. We never went full grain but did half grain recipes and used a malt for our wort.
Good luck and enjoy.
In which my son and I make our own beer
Ryan is going to be 22 at the end of the month. For those of you who have been here since I wrote the 13 on 31 post, you now know how I feel every single day. The rest of you can get off my lawn before I call your parents. So the other day, he and I were having a beer together, and Ryan said, "W...
Two years ago I spent 9 weeks traveling from Guatemala to Panama. I only used the internet to book a hotel once or twice. No email, no facebook, no cell phones no nothing. This might be a bit easier for me since my wife and I both have no cell phones...never have.
It was great although I did get very homesick. The cool thing was when I got home I had a lot of stories to share as well as photos. Nowadays people know all about your trip since they saw the photos, read the blog posts, etc in real time. There is nothing to talk about upon your return.
This was how I backpacked Europe in the 90's and I prefer it.
In which Wil goes to Germany (updated)
The following was written about ten hours ago, on another continent. I thought I'd published it before I left, but it turns out I saved it as a draft, instead. Good times. I'm sitting in the lounge at LAX, waiting to board my flight to Heathrow. Sometime tomorrow afternoon, I'll end up in Germany...
Hey Wil, hopefully with an early start you'll be off early enough to enjoy the beautiful weather today here in Vancity. While in town you and if you find yourself in a pub, you should try a couple local ales... Raven Cream Ale or Driftwood Ale. Good beers 'cause tomorrow is going to be rainy again. Have a good weekend all.
two hundred words before six in the morning
When the alarm went off at 5am, I wasn't sure where I was. I mean, I knew I was in bed, but I was on the wrong side of the bed, and why was I awake when it's still dark outside? After a few seconds, my brain finished booting up and I remembered that I am in Vancouver, I sleep on the wrong side o...
Nice and Sunny in Vancity today...
Tomorrow, I go back to Eureka
“What’s the forecast for Vancouver?” Anne asked. “It’s in the 40s and raining,” I said. “Oh, that sounds awesome,” she said, in a tone of voice that indicated the opposite was actually true. “It’s okay,” I said, “I have my scarf and my jacket and my warm hat.” As I listed each of these items, ...
Your readers have good taste in comics. My reading list runs in a similar vein. Morning Glories is great as was the first issue of of Nick Spencer's other Image book "Infinite Vacation". Invincible is great (the delays suck though) as is all of Kurt Busik's Astro City. I like Superhero books that show the heroes in another light (more realistic?). Irredeemable and Incorruptible are interesting takes on the superhero too (Art is so-so on Incorruptible). John Byrne's Next Men was cool too (Haven't read the new issues yet).
I...love...Fables. Willingham is a great writer. Such a great book. I really like Luca Rossi's art on the House of Mystery. I want some of those original pages...can't find them anywhere.
Walking Dead is super good too...
So much to read, so little time...
It's Wednesday, so here's a post about comic books
When I was a kid, I was a DC Universe guy all the way, with rare forays into the Marvel Universe to read a few X-Men books, and the occasional Silver Surfer 100 page spectacular (remember those? I loved those oversized one shots in the 70s and 80s.) I realized last week, though, that the bulk of...
Enjoyed your Awesome hour on Friday. I had to dip out early to catch Frank Quitely. I also missed the Guild panel. So much going on. Maybe next time we'll get a chance to meet. Next time you're in Vancouver...beers and board games?
Emerald City Comicon after action report
ECCC has officially joined PAX on the List of Conventions I Don't Ever Want To Miss. It's well-organized, staffed by competent and friendly volunteers, and has what is, in my opinion, the perfect balance of comics and popular geek culture. This year, I had to leave Saturday afternoon to fly home...
Cool. I will track you down tomorrow. Cheers!
My Emerald City Comicon schedule, and an ultra-limited merchandise thingy
Tomorrow, I head up to glorious Seattle for the Emerald City ComiCon. I'm doing the usual storytellings and autograph signings, though I have to leave on Saturday due to an unfortunately-timed family commitment. I'm hosting an Awesome Hour on Friday at 4pm, and I'll be on The Guild panel with Am...
Hey Wil,
I will be at ECCC once again this year, making the short trip from Vancouver, Canada with a couple friends. I look forward to partaking in your Awesome Hour.
Have a good con!
