Clean-up and stabilization of the Fukushima reactors continue. Actually, Unit 1 bottom head has achieved 100 C reading, which is approaching a cold shutdown condition. I really don't think that they should declare a cold shutdown until they get continuous recirculation through a heat exchanger established. Continue reading
After viewing all parts of the presentation from the above link, I think bureaucracy created the critical situation occurring at the Fukushima power plant. Proper venting techniques documented in a procedure would have saved the primary containment from rupturing. The idea behind venting is to release a little radiation to ensure that one does not release significant amounts with a containment breach. Apparently they permitted the containments to fail in at least two of the units thereby allowing significant radiation to be released to the atmosphere. Continue reading
