William Blake's journey and experience in "Dead Man" is one of the most intriguing and interesting I have seen. When we first started watching the film in class I had a lot of trouble relating the film to the the two books we have read, "Song of Solomon" and "Heart of Darkness." However, after thinking about the film more, and my last blog post about Milkman's maturation, I have realized the extreme growth in William Blake. Blake comes to a new territory, slightly frightened and confused, as seen when he is on the train and is "weirded out", if you... Continue reading
While reading Song of Solomon, I have noticed that Milkman seems to be extremely underdeveloped and immature in character. Although physically mature, Milkman seems to never have grown up at all, which has occured because of his extremely sheltered life as a child. I believe that precise point of Milkman's maturation would have to be during Chapter 11 while he is in Shalimar. Milkman first is treated as an unwanted outsider while he is in Solomon's store, he gets into a fight and then is invited hunting because of his "broken bottle" skills. When Milkman changes out of his nice... Continue reading
On page 156 and 157 Guitar and Milkman are talking about the nature of white people because of Guitar's involvement in the Seven Days. I thought Guitar's thoughts about white people being "unnatural" was very interesting, however not accurate at all. From Guitar's point of view the white man is "unnatural" because he kills for fun, power, attention, money, or land. I don't understand why Guitar believes this to make one "unnatural", in fact, I would assume that killing for any other reason than these would make one unnatural. Humans are animals, White, Black, Asian, Middle-Eastern, all of these races... Continue reading
Schindler's List, in my eyes, is an almost perfect fit to the tragedy archetype. Schindler's List, directed by Steven Spielberg, depicts a dramatized version of factual events during the 1940's when Nazis had control of Poland. Oskar Schindler is a wealthy business owner who is making a lot of money from providing services for the Nazi Regime. He hires Jews to work in his factory in poland so he wont have to pay them as much money. At the beginning of the film it is noticeable that one of Oskar Schindler's character flaws is that he feels the need to... Continue reading
Edmund The Bastard, a very interesting character in Shakespeare's King Lear. He is a classic Shakespeare villain, a close relation to a central character, plots to kill and deceive in order to obtain land and money, show the world that bastard born children are equally smart, skilled, and natural as normal people....wait what? Yes Edmund is a villain looking to gain money and land, these are his motives. Hidden away is a more important motive for Edmund's villainous actions, Edmund actually wants to do something good. He is standing up for children who aren't born out of wed-lock. “Now, gods,... Continue reading
Gefunden Found Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Translation: Hyde Flippo Ich ging im Walde I was walking in the woods So für mich hin, Just on a whim of mine, Und nichts zu suchen, And seeking nothing, Das war mein Sinn. That was my intention. Im Schatten sah ich In the shade I saw Ein Blümchen stehn, A little flower standing Wie Sterne leuchtend Like stars glittering Wie Äuglein schön. Like beautiful little eyes. Ich wollt es brechen, I wanted to pick it Da sagt' es fein: When it said delicately: Soll ich zum Welken, Should I just to wilt Gebrochen... Continue reading
