I celebrate Valentine's Day with my husband; we usually buy something a little splashy (some extra lovely champagne, or some caviar, or both!) and have it just at home on our own. I can't bear the set menus and crowded restaurants on V Day itself.
PS: for the purposes of the giveaway, I spend enough time in the US to still qualify as "resident!".
{giveaway} stella and dot sierra necklace
**This giveaway is closed! Winner is announced at the bottom** I love a statement necklace. When I was trying to define my signature style, I knew that oversized and dramatic pieces of jewelry was part of my look. So when I got a chance to preview the new Stella & Dot Spring collection, I...
New Year Wisdom
A friend (hi KK!) posted the Dalai Lama's 18 Rules for Living on her Facebook page the other day, and I've been thinking about them ever since. Some of them are really easy for me, and some of them I've struggled with since, well, forever. Here they are: 1. Take... Continue reading

Thank you for the gentle kick in the pants! I also feel overwhelmed at the long list of things I need to get accomplished in the next few months (that I should have accomplished over the last few months). I won't get it all done, but if I at least make a good *dent* in it, that is progress and not failure.
start where you are
I get overwhelmed. There's so much to do in the moment. There's so much to catch up on. I have lots of ideas, and lots of half-finished projects. I am just now learning that there is no finish line. My mantra for 2012 is Start Where You Are. It's impossible for me to catch up on everything...
I couldn't love it more, Sharon!
Limewood Hotel, my perfect getaway
Limewood Hotel is my favourite nearby place to go when I want to get out of the city. Here's why: It is exactly a 1.5 hour drive from our house, which is completely bearable. The rooms strike that perfect balance of cozy + luxurious... not too formal and not too rustic either (and more import...
I love that Marmee quote from Little Women, Gwen! I haven't read it in a while; thank you for the lovely reminder.
What an amazing post, Megan. I was never a girly girl as a kid either, and I never felt ANY pressure to be one to fit in, but I can see that marketing to children is completely different now than it was 30 years ago. I don't have children yet, but I watch my friend's children get bombarded by pink sparkly princessey ballerina type things, (cakes, clothing motifs, iphone apps, toys) and it feels really abnormal and single-focused to me. Why not love horses, or the stars and planets, or dinosaurs, or birds, instead of ONLY Disney princess/Barbie things?
I love the thought that you put into parenting. Your girls are lucky.
the confessional: i might be failing my daughters
I still see babies when they sleep A few weeks back, Dacey was sick (again) and so after the doctor's office, I took her to the grocery store where she got to pick out canned soup. We never, ever buy canned soup unless someone is sick, and it's a bit of a treat/tradition for the ones who need h...

Good heavens, this looks absolutely delicious! I love anything nutty/caramel-y. I'm definitely going to try this.
aunt bills brown candy
While Mondays are usually reserved for all things Mommy, it's Christmas! Which means everything is in happy chaos, including HH. So enjoy my mom's take on this famous holiday treat. Making this caramel/fudgy candy has been a tradition in my family for as long as I can remember. My mother mad...

We also used to do a big Chrismas for everyone, and then eventually we started drawing names for the adults and gifts for all the children. THEN we stopped even doing that (for the adults) because it just became so rote. Everyone asked everyone else's wife/mother/husband what they wanted within a certain budget, and of course, that is what they'd get. No surprise, no thought, just ticking a box on the list. (This sounds really depressing!!) Now we just get together and have a big partay, the kids get lots of toys, and it feels really great. No pressure, no traveling on planes with loads of heavy presents, just lots of enjoying the family being together.
gifting
It's a rainy day in Los Angeles, and I'm sitting close to the fire, coffee mug in hand, smug because I don't have any more Christmas shopping to do. This is not because I am overly organized during the holiday craziness. No, this is because our family wiped out the giving of adult gifts. At ...
It looks great! I've just ordered it for myself. In the future, this looks like a great gift for foodie friends.
Gift Guide, Day Thirteen
A Great Magazine I often find myself looking at Lucky Peach and thinking, “I wish we could have done that at Gourmet.” The magazine is fearless, irreverent, well-written and brilliantly art-directed. It’s an entirely new generation of food magazine. If you haven’t seen it, you should. And if ...
You're absolutely right about the customer support aspect of Typepad; they're fantastic. I've just started blogging recently, and they are great at answering all of my stupid questions! I read a few reviews of blogging services before I chose a service provider, and Typepad seemed to get consistently good reviews. Also, almost all of the blogs I liked the look of (including yours!) were Typepad.
thinking of starting a blog? consider typepad.
**I am not being paid or perked by Typepad for this post. ** People frequently ask me questions about blogging, specifically about how to get started. I feel like there is a lot of good information on the internet about finding your voice, blogging regularly, and blogging your passion. What ...

A little reality check, or The Story of Stuff
This video for the The Story of Stuff is one of the best and most thought provoking things I've seen recently. Many of the issues Annie Leonard discusses are issues that are on my mind a lot lately, particularly as our planet's population recently hit seven billion. I especially love... Continue reading

I love Fall (or 'Autumn' as it is referred to in London). The scent of dried leaves everywhere is gorgeous, I have an excuse to drink even more tea than usual, and I love layering on cozy soft cashmere clothes.
{giveaway} mother's tree of life necklace from lovefeast shop
***UPDATE*** winner announced at the end of the post. Thanks, everyone! My bloggy friends ChrisAnn and Kristin of the LoveFeast Table have a LoveFeast shop filled with things I've been drooling over for months (these velvet plush pumpkins caught my eye and I don't even a big Fall decor girl, ...

Good heavens, Seamus is absolutely gorgeous! So unique and so friendly looking! We have a rescue Lurcher who is just fabulous. And a Whippet. and a Jack Russell. I'm stopping at 3 dogs unless we move to the country which is highly unlikely. Good on you for rescuing Seamus; I wish you many happy years with him.
puppy love and the wiggle waggle walk
This is our dog, Seamus: Seamus is in our lives because of people like you, who read my blog and supported Anne and me when we decided to celebrate the memory of our awesome dog, Ferris, and did the Wiggle Waggle Walk for the Pasadena Humane Society in 2009. Anne wrote: Just over 8 years ag...
