She's the Man is a modernized version of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. When adapting Twelfth NIght the writers modernized the characters and the situation but also added a feminist viewpoint. Instead of the using Viola's motive in Twelfth Night of wanting to be with the guy she likes, in She's the Man her purpose of dressing as a man is to achieve her own goals and prove that woman are just as good as guys at sports. Society tries to force Viola into becoming a stereotypical woman but Viola objects to the role and breaks away from the stereotype. Viola's mother... Continue reading
While i was on the website WAM! I found an article titled "Still Far from Gender Equity". This article got me to start thinking about when and how women's portrayal in the media will change. The article references statistics on how many woman are major participants in the creating of the media we see. It was eye opening to see that only half or less percent of jobs in the media were women. I think that the statistics found in this article gives evidence to why women are often objectified through media. Since there are more men in the media... Continue reading
I believe Richard Corliss is correct in his assertion that readers think the book is better because they have a perfect version in their mind. I have read a lot of books about alternate worlds and these books contain a lot of imagery to create the new world. Sometimes I feel like the books are meant to only be seen in the readers' heads. They are alternate universes after all and are not meant to be based in our world. In books with magic, time travel, etc I feel since these events cannot occur in today's world the movies make... The comedy Mean Girls is about a girl named Cady who moves to Evanston after being home schooled while living in Africa. Cady then has to experience high school with barely any knowledge of what teenagers act like. She then meets the Plastics, a group of popular mean girls. Satire is shown throughout both Cady's little knowledge of high school life and of the Plastics meanness to everyone else at school. One example of dramatic irony is when Cady first arrives at high school. She does not have any experience with high school or any school since she has been... Continue reading
Last year a show called Outsourced aired on NBC. The plot of the show is that the company a man named Todd works for is being outsourced to India. He is then sent by his boss to train the new Indian employees. Todd and his employees go through many situations that involve the differences between life in America and India. Throughout Outsourced the stereotype that Indians are ignorant is highlighted and then satirized. . One character on the show is named Gupta. Gupta depicts the stereotype that Indians are ignorant through all of his dumb actions. One example is that... Continue reading
In The Last of the Mohicans the idea of Rugged Individualist. A Rugged Individual is supposed to be tough, an individual and sharp. All these characteristics are shown through Nathaniel's and the Frontier settlers' life. The settlers show they are sharp by being able to navigate the forest and rely on themselves for food to eat. Nathaniel shows that he is sharp and street smart by not burying his beloved family. When Nathaniel sees that his friends that stayed behind are dead he is sad but knows if he buries them they could be tracked. Nathaniel thinking about his own... Continue reading
The Scarlet Letter portrays the conflict of Individualism vs. Community. The same conflict can be seen in the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast. When the audience sees Belle for the first time she is off to the bookstore to get a new book. A song then begins with the villagers singing about how strange Belle is. The villagers talk about how she is "never part of any crowd." Then later on they comment on how she has "her noise stuck in a book." All of these judgements about Belle made by the townspeople lead to her being an outcast... Continue reading
Holding the spot as the number 2 top grossing film of all time Titanic is known by many people around the globe. The surprising thing is that the Producers of Titanic used Romantic characteristics when creating the story. The movie is based around a upper class girl named Rose and a lower class boy named Jack. Rose is engaged to a rich man named Cal to earn back her families good name and money for both herself and her mother. However, on their journey to America on the Titanic Rose meets Jack and already feeling trapped in her life starts... Continue reading
My childhood, like many other people, was filled with Disney movies. One Disney movie that uses Romanticism is Pocahontas. This movie demonstrates the importance of nature in Pocahontas's life. In the song "Colors of the Wind" Pocahontas expresses the influence of nature on her life and how John Smith should appreciate his surroundings. Pocahontas living in nature and knowing more than John Smith about it demonstrates the Romantic thought from Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay "Nature" that leaving society will allow people to fully understand nature. Pocahontas teaches John Smith how to enjoy nature a nd learn from it. In one... Continue reading
Commercials in between your favorite television shows seem to only be trying to sell you their product. In addition, they use different logical fallacies to persuade you to buy whatever they are selling. In this commercial for the Nissan LEAF the creators use an either/or fallacy. In the beginning everyday life is shown with the seemingly simple replacement of electricity with gas. The viewer before they know what the creator is trying to say already has the thought that everything running on gas in their head before the announcer even says anything. Then once the announcer says "Then again what... Continue reading
Although I did not expect the conclusion to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, I do believe it provides a good conclusion to Oskar's story. I agree that it was disappointing that the key had no correlation to Oskar's Dad other than him having bought the vase. I thought the key would be the solution to Oskar's grief and that afterward he would accept his father's death. Unfortunately, my predictions did not come true. The ending to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close did, however, resolve Oskar's grief in another way. The feeling of loss is concluded by Oskar recognizing that his... Continue reading
In this Allstate Ad the mayhem guy is pretending to be a teenage girl while driving a car. There are many stereotypes for teenagers and girl drivers portrayed in this ad. At the beginning, the viewer sees a pink SUV in a parking lot. THe pink SUV is the first example of a stereotype by implying all girls like pink. Next, the commericial supports the notion that all teenagers and especially girls are distracted drivers. The first time the Mayhem men is shown he has a cellphone in his hand. He then says "My BFF Becky just texts and says... Continue reading
In his speech on Thursday night President Barack Obama declared that his new bill will not only put the unemployed back to work in existing jobs but also create plenty of new job opportunities. Obama uses Pathos and Ethos in order to persuade congress as well as the American viewers. At the beginning, Obama uses Pathos to convince congress to pass his bill. He has the audience empathize with the unemployed construction workers who are eager for any job. Obama then tells the audience his bill will solve this problem by using these construction workers to build schools, railroads and... Continue reading
