Excellent piece, good sir. Insightful commentary on a familiar classic.
The most brilliant pop song of them all (Full Of Conjecture edition)
Hey gang, we're still here. So, lately, I have been working my way through the tremendously fascinating catalog of Wilco, with immeasurable thanks given to fellow contributor Andrew. There have been numerous back and forth discussions (if only you could read those threads) on the vagaries of the...
Until the day of this post, I never even knew this song existed. I have to thank my cousin for mentioning it on his blog recently. He's a music biz veteran and probably knows more about obscure bands than anyone I know.
Apparently The Clocks just played the Old Shawnee Days festival recently and apparently were terrible...all ballads and no power-pop. A little bit of digging on the interwebs turned this up: http://wilfullyobscure.blogspot.com/2008/09/clocks-st-lp-1982.html.
The Clocks - She Looks a Lot Like You
This may very well be the best power-pop gem of the 1980s that you've never heard. Did I mention they're from Wichita? Also, give "Nobody's Fool" a listen. They're like a Midwestern version of The Cars.

Taj Mahal: Tomorrow Will Not Be Another Day
It was Taj Mahal's 70th birthday yesterday. He was 28 when he laid down this smokin' track. Wish I would've paid closer attention to his current tour schedule; he was in Kansas City two days ago at Knuckleheads, the quintessential venue for this brand of blues. Sigh... Continue reading

Don't be afraid to just call out for a Bowie tune. It'll prompt me to play the one I know best. Cheers.
Under the Bowie Knife: Why I Love David
I apologize profusely for having been absent for such an extended period of time; however, this absence has not been devoid of music. I went on a little spree the last weekend and dug around record shops in KC. I managed to get an original Roy Orbison "Crying" 45 for three dollars in near perfec...
Nice work. Thanks for sharing your love for Bowie with the rest of us.
*SELF-PROMOTION ALERT*
If you come by Bluestem Bistro this Friday, I'll toss in a Bowie tune in my set for ya...I start at 7.

AHHHHH that makes me want it to happen even more. JTE, if you're reading, please, please, please make it so.
Justin Townes Earle, "Automobile Blues"
Just when I think I've seen and heard all the hot licks and funky rhythms he can rip out of a six-string, Justin Townes Earle absolutely destroys this Lightnin' Hopkins tune and throws me for another loop. Nobody's pickin' like this. C'mon, Justin, when's the live/solo blues album coming out?

Sigh...
What great tunes. Just when I think I prefer The Who's version of "Summertime Blues," this one pops up again and reminds me of its simple genius.
You know what we need more of? Vocals with slap echo and cavernous reverb, woody, plucky-double bass, wobbly tremolo-laden guitars and a plain-old boogie beat.
Summertime Blues/Twenty Flight Rock
I don't particularly like summer, but I love this song. I wanted to be Eddie Cochran when I was a kid, these two songs are why. Now, someone explain to me why Jeremy Renner has not been cast as Eddie in a movie of his (tragically) short life. And this beaut from the film "The Girl Can't Help I...
Bohemian Rhapsody On The Way To School
When I was a kid, it was usually The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix or the Woodstock soundtrack in my dad's car -- but he was a Queen fan too. Either way, this rocks. Continue reading

Somedays...
...I miss my friend Shannon. Today is one of those days.
Catching up on some posts I missed while on vacation. The scenario "where Paul and Ringo join Townshend and Daltrey to form The Whotles" is pure gold.
A few words about "The New Beatles"
Good morning gang. Now, I know we really try to foster positivity on this here blog but I feel there is something out there, Beatles related, that needs to be addressed and it's not going to get a lot of positive vibes from me. That something is James McCartney (Paul's son) coming out and sayi...

Underrated artist: Terry Reid
As a follow-up to Eric's post about the lovely Maggie Bell -- and to make another Led Zeppelin connection -- this week I've been spinning Superlungs by Terry Reid, one of the forgotten artists from the across the pond. You can read his full story here, but the long-and-the-short of... Continue reading

Underrated Album v. 3-Queen of the Night by Maggie Bell
If I were to tell you there was a singer out there who was considered "the Scottish Janis Joplin", had an album produced by Jerry Wexler, got a record contract thanks to Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant and had the one and only Jimmy Page guest on one of her records, you'd think this singer was ...
Uriah Heep
File this one under "huh?" I present to you Uriah Heep, one of the corniest and most beloved rock acts from the 1970s that nobody's ever heard of. Led Zeppelin [a band I love dearly] weren't the only ones singing about magic, wizards, kings, birds of prey and other mythical... Continue reading

Machine Gun = maybe the greatest exhibition of guitar playing ever. Ever. If you haven't - but I'm sure you have - check out Hendrix and the Band of Gypsys "Live at the Fillmore West" double LP live recording. It's NASTY.
Underrated Album v. 2-Them Changes by Buddy Miles
Back again with another album that has been lost in the shuffle. Recently added to the Matthews Archive is Them Changes by Buddy Miles. A little background on Buddy Miles, after playing with folks such as the Delfonics and Wicked Wilson Pickett, Buddy founded The Electric Flag with guitarist Mi...
Excellent selection, sir. Timely as well - I've been spinning Band of Gypsys in my headphones during morning workouts and forgot how much I loved the stuff that trio was churning out.

If we're going the tourney route with this, we could actually create a true 64-song bracket -- but that might be quite laborious.
For the next tourney...
I'll skip telling for whom I'm going to vote. If you've been keeping up with my posts, you should know. It seems that '80s one hit wonders was the decided topic for what was going to come next. I'll create this post just so we can discuss how we're going to establish what songs shall be chosen. ...
In my view, they're one of the best rock groups out there today. They've got two excellent songwriters who aren't afraid to tackle topics that others wouldn't dare touch, a solid rhythm section, good, muscly guitars and they're very consistent - not really a dud in their catalog.
I'm not sure what else I could say to "explain" why they're good. Either you like them or you don't.
War songs.
Reflecting on wartime in song is an age-old practice. Alabama born-and-bred singer/songwriter Jason Isbell -- primarily known for his work with the Drive-By Truckers -- has penned some of the most compelling tracks depicting the equally heartbreaking and uplifting stories of Iraq war vets. He sa...
