A Glimpse at the Missouri Weekly Weighted Average Feeder Cattle Report Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold unevenly steady, from 5.00 lower to 5.00 higher, except yearling heifers over 800 lbs. 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Holstein steers 2.00 to 10.00 higher. Yearling feeders are considered in short supply as they are trickling into sale barns rather than pouring in by the load, the way buyers would like. Cattle buyers who double as row-crop farmers are leaving their seats at the auction empty as harvest continues to push forward. Wheat needs to be sown and some are even... Continue reading

Several auctions were closed early week in observance of the Labor Day Holiday, which resulted in fewer receipts for the state as a whole. Much of the state did received rain over the last week a general 2-3 for most but some reports of up to or slightly over 8 inch fell in spots. Although still in drought status; conditions are have greatly improved over the last week and many producers now even seeing a shade of green as a fresh growth of grass is evident in pastures. This week’s supply was moderate to heavy with steers out numbering heifers by a larger than typical percentage. Another notable in the supply was the number of steers over 600 lbs which few really expected to see any time this fall. Producer’s moods did get a boost upward as rain was forecasted and began to arrive late week when the remnants of Hurricane Isaac approached. Even with the possibility of heavy rain, farmers are ready to welcome as much or little as they can get. The general consensus is that even if it comes faster or heavier it could soak... Although buyers are very concerned with health of the feeders due to stress from heat and dust, and are very aware of poor feeding margins, demand remains moderate to good. Even though the current supply is being fueled by lack of pastures and water, the long term outlook of lower numbers is present in the minds of everyone in the industry. Demand is moderate to light. As typical even in non-drought situations, light weight bawling, unweaned calves have a more difficult time generating excitement in the auction ring and once current drought factors are added in this lack of excitement has become multiplied. Yearlings which require less days on feed and fewer bushels of the current record high 8.00 plus corn are finding more moderate demand but still are far from the levels just a few months ago when buyers were only concerned with ownership and willing to buy at about any price. 550 lbs steers are now averaging 46.00 per... After the light holiday week offering of last week nearly all barns were back to the business of selling cattle this week. The supply and demand was moderate, although a few barns in the most drought stricken areas of the state had a heavier supply for this time of year. The cattle industry continues to be overwhelmed by grain news as crop conditions continue to decline each week. The USDA report released this week dropped projected corn yields by another 12 percent placing average projected yields below 150 bushels per acre. To view the full report, visit the MDA Market... This week’s supply of feeders was moderate to heavy with light to moderate demand. Trucking and transportation of feeders has become a problematic issue as buyers are dealing with many unweaned and unworked calves which are highly susceptible to the added stress of high temperatures. The lack of moisture and triple digit temperatures continue to force more cattle to auctions around the state especially in the south central and southeast areas of the state. This week’s supply was light to moderate as many of the normal Monday auctions were closed in observance of the holiday, which had an impact on receipts. Dry conditions throughout much of the state, especially in the south central and southeast, are forcing producers to make the decision between feeding and marketing cattle. Given current price levels many producers have made the decision to market early rather than feed what little hay they have produced thus far. Compared to last week, feeder steers were mostly steady with some strength shown on load lots and the greatest weakness coming on the fleshy calves. Holstein steers sold 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers went mostly steady to 2.00 higher, although locally many reporters noted particular strength on those heifers coming in load lots, especially the yearlings.
