It happened this morning, Wednesday, July 10th, 2013, at 8:48 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time, the earliest it's ever happened for me. It was at Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County, Colorado, my local patch. I was (literally) running a quick errand, and I heard it: seen? Then again, louder: seen? Then one more time: seen? And then it was over. But it has happened. Next thing you know, the Snow Geese will be flying south for the winter, and the juncos, and building snow forts, and sledding, and Christmas counts and all.

Think for just a moment about a typical birding festival. Well, alright, each bird festival is special in its own way, proving once again that the brilliant and diabolical opening sentence of Anna Karenina is the greatest lie of all time. Nevertheless, there are a few points of commonality among... Continue reading

Certain topics inevitably arouse the passions of ABA members. Should Hawaii be admitted to the ABA Area? Should heard-only birds count? Outdoor cats, anyone? And, as the latest issue of Birding once again attests (James Hill, “Details, Details,” p. 16), we birders sure get fired up about the proper care... Continue reading

We noted yesterday that we at Birding delight in running articles with surprising content. Case in point: Paul Hess’s “News and Notes” in the current, January/February 2013 issue. Hess starts the coverage with an item on the recent falcons-aren't-related-to-other-raptors news that has surprised so many of us. But it’s Hess’s... Continue reading

Much has been written of late about the decline of “joiners.” The problem is especially acute, it is said, with young people. To be sure, many commentators have remarked on the near absence of today’s young people from bird clubs, state ornithological societies, and bird conservation organizations. Is that true?... Given this response, should we revisit the duck quiz?

In Part 1 of the Jan./Feb. 2013 Birding Photo Quiz, we had to contend with twelve different ducks. This time it's a whole lot easier. Just a single photo. Here: The photo is from Granger, Williamson County, Texas, in mid-February. Have at it! P.s. And when you're done with Parts... Continue reading

Andrew Guttenberg, a junior at Montana State University, created the official artwork for the 2013 ABA Bird of the Year, which graces the cover of the January/February 2013 issue of Birding magazine. Here Guttenberg tells us about some experiences that have inspired his nighthawk art. About the Cover: January/February 2013... Continue reading

Hello, everybody! In keeping with recent tradition, we're going to try to work out together some provisional answers to the Photo Quiz in the current (January/February 2013) issue of Birding magazine.
