Mild chop, a decent swell, temperature changes and a rough rip around the point... Sounds like another swim with the BnB (or a questionable Friday night on the town). The variance across 700 odd meters of ocean this morning reminds us that it isn't so much the fittest who will... Continue reading

Thanks Rosemary.
Thanks Paul, Also notice the youth in photo #1. He is looking at the beach. Lower body is grounded and strong but upper structure shows resignation... As if an instant before committing to the journey.
Never send to know for whom the bell tolls...

It's known that when you put yourself in a different environment, new genes are turned on throughout your body. These genes encode proteins that are the building blocks for a different version of yourself. A you that you’ve had the potential to be all along, but haven’t yet met. These... Continue reading

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately almost all of the photos prior to the 'lets go' at Shelley were blurred. The symmetry of the second last photo however, was fortunate.

We tend to think of the beach as the place where the water ends and solid land begins. It’s a fair supposition but, even though sand is solid, our beaches are as fluid as the ocean. Harsh storm swells impact the beach and tear it down. Whilst gentle summer waves... Continue reading

You're probably already doing it Inge. I think some coaches talk about spiraling forward from the hips. Oh, and 'vortex' or 'vortices' is probably a better search term than 'spiral' when googling into fluid dynamics and swimming. A.

Spirals appear everywhere in the universe from the double helix of DNA to distant galaxies. Physicists think it's because the spiral is one of nature's most energy efficient strategies. This feature of nature is also the reason our swims are so damn cold right now. Prevailing north east winds are... Continue reading

People talk about deciding to 'live life all-in', as if it's a choice. Life has a start and a finish, it's bounded by death. That means you are already as 'all in' as you're ever going to get... You have nothing to lose, that you aren't already going to lose... Continue reading

Have you noticed the more swims you do, the better you can accurately gauge a course to Shelley Beach? At first you’re sighting every 10 strokes, then you get down to sighting a dozen times, then 6, maybe even less. After a while it doesn’t even matter if it’s rough... Continue reading

Why would a parent want their child to learn, "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game"? You'd think that in today's rat-race it would be wiser to teach them to do whatever it takes to beat the others. Play is an interesting part of... Continue reading

Clever rituals provide a place to find coherence when grappling with the chaos of life. A way to ground our self on something solid and known. Not a grounding anchor to hold us down. More a stable launchpad from which to push off as we move forward and evolve. That... Continue reading

The life of a Sea Squirt (tunicate) is an interesting and cautionary tale. As a juvenile, a sea squirt's early life is spent swimming around exploring it's world. When the sea squirt matures it settles down and, seeking security, attaches itself to a rock. ...Then it promptly digests it's own... Continue reading

It seems I hear more and more people claiming they're "all alone". Being all alone is a bit of a myth. We're as alone as two drops of water in the ocean. If we FEEL we are alone it's because we can't find the energy to experience others. Another myth... Continue reading

When we suspend the stress induced autocraving pathology that's perpetuated as economic policy, we find an opportunity to rediscover a timeless joy and true sense of fulfillment the likes of which can only be created and nurtured from within. In a world of on-demand disconnected disposability here we find ourselves... Continue reading

Life is perceived as snapshots of change, one instant to another. The nervous system processes our reality as 'differences'... Hotter - colder, lighter - darker, louder - quieter etc. You notice these aspects of your external and internal environment as the changes shift back and forth along the relative spectrum... Humans make health over-complicated, mostly because our conscious mind likes to think it's running the whole show... But it need not be so. It's simple, so simple one of the key factors that determines how much illness or wellness you get to enjoy in life is even indicated by the... Continue reading
