International law does not address the numbers of casualties but rather the methods. International law does address the difficulty of self-defense against those who do wantonly violate those laws. Hamas does use human/ civilian shields. That is a war crime. Hamas does launch rockets from homes, hospitals, schools. The rocket that killed the Israeli child was mistakenly thought to come from a UN school. Ok, not UN - was from a Hamas school. By placing launchers in civilian areas, Hamas itself transforms civilian targets into military ones. Israel is acting legally by targeting Hamas launchers. Hamas is not acting legally by placing their citizens in such positions. War criminality is not defined by optics. Unfortunately, Hamas is expert at the use of those optics to generate hatred against Israel. Do you wonder at the lack of Arab outcry against Israel? Did you note that Hamas is also attacking Fatah? Please don't let horrific pictures and appearances blind you to the facts and the parameters of international law. And above all, don't forget: Hamas goal is the destruction of Israel. In the wake of Hamas actions, Israeli response is remarkably restrained.
