Thanks for this blog post! I love the idea of labeling groups by goal level. I agree that teaching with goals in mind is we should approach teaching. It really does send a message to the students we work with that we believe in their success and what we know that they can achieve their goals, especially since they my not hold that belief themselves or know that they can do it.
I appreciate that CEC makes it a goal to stay updated on new laws and regulations. I come to this sight often, that it makes it nice that the information I need is in a central location. I agree it is very important to know this information. I especially like what was said about how the law takes some responsibility off of us, as special education teacher, because the decisions are made for us.
This is such a helpful post. Though I do not experience many meltdowns, I agree that it is important that teachers be prepared and have a plan. Two things really stood out to me. First, I like what you said about remembering that you are the adult and that it is important to keep control of yourself. It's easy to lose your cool in these type of situations and take things personal. I also like that you emphasized that the end result is student compliance and we need to make sure that we are sticking to that. So many great points. Thank you, again!
I like how you took a concept that is not easy to understand and turned it into a meaningful lesson. The GRIT survey is a good way to begin a lesson because it captures their attention right away. Also, I liked how you gave examples of people they could relate to, again that keeps their interest. It is great that you allowed for your lesson to take a turn. Sometimes as teachers we make lesson plans expecting them to go a certain way and when there are "interruptions" we do not take the time to address them, but move pass them, continuing the lesson we have in mind. Lastly, I like how you provided an application aspect to the grit lesson where they can practice it and be recognized for their hard work. Great blog entry and great lesson!
Thanks for sharing this post! It was a wonderful reminder to me of the importance and the benefits of collaboration. I am the type of person who likes to be in control and tries to do things on my own. I end of taking more than I can handle and become extremely overwhelmed as a result. I was reminded that I need to collaborate more. There is a greatness in coming together and sharing skills and creativity. I am student teaching at a school where half of the teachers share students while they teach a particular school. I agree that it is a great model to students when they see their teachers working together!
This is a well written blog! You made so many important points. I love your definition of high expectations. I also like what was said about accommodations; how you never put anything in place- a behavior plan, a modification, a support- that you do not already have an idea of how to take away in the future. Fading prompts and accommodations is so important because we want students to be self-sufficient. This is a good rule of thumb to guide the accommodations and prompts we make. It helps guide the decisions we make and makes them more strategic. As a student teacher, this has given me a lot to think about and put into practice. Thanks!
Lorin, This is such a wonderful entry! I enjoyed reading it and watching the videos. They were very moving. I love how you approached your disability awareness efforts at your school. I am student teaching in a classroom where there is a mix of students with mild/moderate and severe needs. This is a different experience for me, but one I have come to appreciate, knowing that I may work at a school that has a similar set-up. The mild/moderate students interact everyday with the students with severe needs, however I'm not so sure that they completely understand their disabilities. Other student come into the SPED classroom to read or interact with the studentst as well, but they are in the same boat of not knowing what their disabilities entail. I think your ideas of watching videos and providing a lesson around them is a great and I intend to try them out. Thanks!
