As this course comes to an end, I have looked back on our project to see what I would suggest that future students do differently. Although there are not many things that I would have changed about our approached, there are some ways the process could have been improved. One issue I ran into was that I spent too much time researching in the beginning. We spent more than half of the semester just reading about the new technology and the market. While some of that was definitely necessary, we ended up getting really far in the weeds on certain... Continue reading

With less than 2 weeks until we finish our final presentation, we have our work cut out for us. During our initial presentation, our client contact and others offered many suggestions and asked to see many additional things in the final presentation. This means that we need to do a lot of work to bring that up to date. Additionally, they have asked us to produce a survey so that we can gain further insight from users or non-users of the technology. I spent several days working on the survey and spoke to several GE personnel about it to make... Continue reading

Things are definitely getting hectic at this stage. Last week we presented our initial presentation to our client contact and a few other employees. The hardest part of this presentation was deciding upon a message/value proposition for each of our verticals. Having been entrenched in all the details of the machines and the technology and the financial data, it was hard to take a step back and get an big picture view. Drew was helpful in this step because he has some knowledge of the product but could provide a good outsider's look at it. He helped facilitate some discussions... Continue reading

This past week marked an important transitional period for our group. Up until this point, we had been diving full-force into the research. We dug through annual reports on line, read blogs, read journal articles, called industry professionals, and visited plants. Now, however, it's time to take all that we have learned and put it into our deliverables. This can be difficult because we have gathered SO much information. It will take time to sift through it all and organize the important information in a succinct fashion. To add pressure to that, we will be having a preliminary presentation on... Continue reading

This week we have been asked to discuss a little about our backgrounds so that classmates can come to us for insights if our backgrounds align with their capstone projects. I have professional experience in Energy markets since I worked for several years at Schneider Electric. I have professional experience with client management from the same company. I also know a lot about household products in international markets since I lived and worked with a family in France. I have some legal exposure since I interned with a law firm for several years when I was pre-law. In general I... Continue reading

This week was geared mostly toward making phone calls to experts who have special insight into how this new technology works and what some advantages/disadvantages are in the industry. I was able to have several very helpful conversations with professionals who were more than happy to explain things to me. After having these conversations, I feel like I am noticing some significant trends and commonalities between what my contacts have told me. This is very exciting because it means that we are getting closer to honing in on our objectives. I have a lot more confidence in what the main... Continue reading

This week I feel like I have gained some more clarity into the topics we are researching. I have started to get a better understanding of who the players are in the market and what the main demand drivers are. I started an Excel document that compares all the different potential customers based on what they sell, how much they had in sales, money in R&D, etc. This is going to help us focus our research so we know exactly what kind of information we need to be looking for. This process has included a heavy amount of reading. Reading... Continue reading

This week we had our first full-team, formal meeting with our contact at GE. We were very excited to have the opportunity to meet with her and discuss some of the questions we had accumulated over the previous couple of weeks. An hour, though, is not a long time when you have many, many questions. We created a meeting agenda that listed some specific points of discussion but with such a short time-frame and so much to cover, it was difficult to take a deep dive into each discussion point. That said, we did get some very pertinent info from... Continue reading

This past week has been largely focused on reviewing information. Last week I posted about drinking water through a firehouse. I had spent that week gathering as much information as I possibly could on the subject and throwing it all into a Word document. This week, however, was about organizing that information in a way that made sense in order to truly understand what we knew and what we still needed to find out. To attack this, I made my messy Word document into a PowerPoint which separated information thematically. This week was also about sharing information, both within our... Continue reading
