I don't know about you, but I reckon it's been a relief to actually need blankets or a doona instead of sweating under a sheet in the middle of April. While warm mornings are lovely the crisp morning air has been quite welcome I feel - what we expect of... Continue reading

Very true, Shelley. It's not a race (except for the A team, ok) so there is NO REASON to even think about swimming over the top of someone. If there is less than your body width between 2 people, there is not enough room for you to swim between them. Guys. Some women are faster than you. Breaststroke kicking in a crowd is never a good idea What IS a good idea is to look ahead of you frequently. This mitigates the risk of a head on collision. Here endeth the grumpy old woman rant.
To those celebrating Easter today, Happy Easter. As it commemorates the resurrection of Jesus, I guess happy is an appropriate wish. Yesterday was the last day of daylight saving, and early this morning the clocks went back one hour. On the plus side we will have brighter light for the... Continue reading

I survived. Great blog, Michael, as usual

The final swim of the Summer Badge Series was meant to be last weekend, but conditions were rather ordinary, so it was pushed out a week. This is what greeted swimmers this morning - hello Autumn! Note the pond-like conditions and lack of wind - you'll have to take my... Continue reading

Good morning and happy weekend, dear reader. This (gorgeous) morning I arrived just in time to follow the 6:30 starters down to the water, and on the way met up with the ever photogenic Michele and Martin This pooch was waiting patiently for its human Down on the shoreline I... Continue reading

Morning all! Fewer people today, possibly being kept away by the dark clouds, intermittent rain and greatly reduced parking due to the Sun Run ending at Manly Beach. The Cole Classic will be held tomorrow and I'm going to start with information about this today rather than putting it at... Continue reading

Good morning everyone, and what a gorgeous morning it is. The past few days have been still and close - humid and not much wind. It almost feels as though late summer is holding its breath in anticipation of the transition towards autumn with its crisp, clear air and cool... Continue reading

Hello to all the bold and beautiful friends who got out of bed early to hurl themselves into the 22.5 degree briny depths this Sunday morning. All 620 of us, including 60 newbies including several family groups. Welcome newbies, I hope the early start was worth it and that we'll... Continue reading

I knew today was going to be a Good Day when someone who was parked right across the road from the surf club pulled out just as I was drawing level with their vehicle. The gods of parking must have decided that it was my turn, and for that I... Continue reading

Conditions the past few days have been perfect for open water swimming in our little corner of the ocean. Sunny, calm conditions, gentle southerly swells and warm water temperature. Many swimmers have been happily anticipating completing a 6km swim, taking in the splendid sights of Shelley Beach, the Queenscliff boulders... Continue reading

On this last day of they year can we all please reflect on what it was that made 2017 for us, and what some of the best things were that we can be thankful for? For me the winner must be a continuing return to good health after overcoming a... Continue reading

Hearing distant thunder early this morning, I made a quiet wager with myself that the 6k and 10k swim would be called off. Betting against yourself is the best bet there is because there are no losers, but more on that later. Despite the conditions, over 300 bold and beautiful... Continue reading

Hi Lisa, thanks! I get that effect with my phone. The latest iPhone operating system version (IOS11) has a new feature in the camera app that lets you do it. I can show you on Sunday or Monday. Otherwise look for iPhone Photography School on FB, there are quite a few free instructional videos including one on how to use this feature

While driving to Manly this morning I heard an interesting piece on the radio about the forecast weather patterns in Australia. It appears the tropical Pacific Ocean is approaching La Niña thresholds, and we are verging on a La Niña alert. This likely 2017-18 La Niña event is forecast to... Continue reading
