The first part of this painting was a quickly done line drawing using a bold Signo gel pen. There was no second chance. Look carefully and do it! Once I started, it was easier than I thought. Some watercolor added just as quickly…finished! Whew! Continue reading

It is a treat to live where the spring flowers bloom when they do in calendar pictures… as opposed to being under 3 feet of snow! Continue reading

Taking a break from “serious painting” I playfully embellished my color-test brush marks making this imaginary menagerie. Try it! It’s fun. Continue reading

Happy Valentine’s Day! Although this looks 3 dimensional, it is flat: It is a watercolor blend of a red, orange, purple. I used a bold white Uniball pen to draw the Zentange-inspired lines to make the slight pillow effect. Continue reading

These ladies are dressed for their bookclub meeting, books in hand. The standing one is attired in pages from THE USES OF ENCHANTMENT, Bruno Bettelheim. They may look frivolous, but they take their reading seriously. They are prepared to discuss THE ROAD TO CHARACTER, by David Brooks. Continue reading

These wood models have been beckoning me to dress them for the New Year. Left: Adorned with a striped ribbon top, gold ribbon belt and multi-layered skirt of sheer paper, flecked with gold. Right: In the British tradition, a hat, or fascinator in this case, is the finishing touch. Top... Continue reading

Back home from France, I’m going through my sketchbook: The castle at Azay le Rideau, was closed, but from the grounds of the gift shop, I had this view of the neighboring church. There was just enough time to do this quick pen sketch. I intended to add watercolor later,... Continue reading

I had long wanted to see the famous stained glass windows in Chartres Cathedral. The windows, even more than I expected, were just part of what I saw: Windows almost beyond number, statues of saints known and unknown; and the on- going cleaning to remove 600+ years of grime…a tedious... Along a quiet bike path is The Lenin Cafe. We had intended to lunch here, but, alas, The Lenin keeps erratic hours. Why this name? The cafe owner's daughter wrote her dissertation on Lenin. Continue reading

It was a muggy, hot day in Chinon, when our leader Jane scheduled a wine tour for us before dinner. The tour was in a cave, tunneled under the Chinon castle. I posted a painting of the castle a few days ago. The coolness of the cave was balm to... Continue reading

Our cycle group spent two days in Chinon. Some did more cycling, some hung out and one of us was in art heaven with a free day to paint! The bush and climbing roses are in full bloom, along fences, climbing up old walls. There is a lovely pink rose... Continue reading
