On Being Single – Advice for Myself at the Beginning of The Capstone Experience No, I am not here to give you relationship advice – at least not in the romantic sense. Instead, as I look back on my capstone journey I reflect on the opportunity for personal growth that I chose to take out of the experience. My advice? Before you begin your project, step back and assess the resources you have available. No, I don’t mean the number of Post-its you own (although I do love Post-its). Instead, take a moment from the rush of the day. Sit... Continue reading

This week promises to be quite a marathon. There are a lot of small parts that need to be woven together by the end of the week. And, I look forward to gaining greater peace of mind as I get closer and closer to the finished deliverables. Despite the work that is done so far, I still feel a gap between what I envision the potential for the deliverable where it stands today. The only thing standing between the two is time and focus, aided by good nights of sleep and bottomless cups of coffee. I have been grateful throughout... Continue reading

As this week begins, my main concern is making sure my efforts are working towards delivering recommendations to my client in the best way possible. Since my client is not a marketing expert and is a team of one, I am concerned with making sure that I do not deliver a bunch of academic jargon or recommendations that are not translatable into action for the business. With this comes a great amount of time. I am grateful for the templates I built at the beginning of this process. However, extracting deliverables from research has been very individually time consuming as... Continue reading

Throughout this process I have grown my appreciation for team work. Team work offers the ability to work through a problem with varying perspectives and skill sets. It breaks up tasks, helps with emotional support, and holds its members accountable. Since I have been working independently on my capstone project, this week I have been reflecting on how despite the solo activities of my work, I have valued peripheral “team members’” contributions throughout the process. For example, this weekend I met a peer for coffee to discuss our projects. The simple opportunity to verbalize the Big Picture process in a... Continue reading

This week’s interviews were full of valuable insights. The professionals I spoke with pleasantly surprised me by how willing and seemingly excited they were to share their knowledge and wisdom. And, there is no doubt in my mind that brides LOVE to talk about their weddings! After over twenty hours of interviews in the last week I am more than excited to start digging in to find patterns, themes and clarify influencers and the “moments that matter”. Since I was able to conduct all of the interviews myself I feel that I have a pretty good grasp of what direction... Continue reading

One of the three targets identified by my client has been wedding parties. If a stranger were to judge what I do based on the materials on my desk and the appointments on my calendar they would probably guess I was in the wedding planning business. This past week has been full of wedding chat and promises to reflect what I have scheduled for this week. It was only fitting that I ended my week in a bridesmaid’s dress as a part of a high school friend’s wedding party this Saturday and that I begin my week planning for another... Continue reading

“Cincinnati is one big small town.” I have heard multiple people express this to me this week as I have been exploring (among other things) the way information travels in the Cincinnati area. Lucky for me, the city is full of special events, from festivals to small gatherings. And, I am grateful to be able to be on-site and conducting research locally, which allows me to gleam better understandings and deeper insights than what I would find online or over the phone. This month is dedicated, in part, to building a thorough understanding of target consumers, their needs, desires, current... Continue reading

Perhaps the most entertaining part of this past week for me was finally being able to see my client perform live! Being on-site always provides unexpected insights – in this case a poster listing peer band names, observations about how the crowd engages, how management of the venue functions, on-site advertising, and more. It was a valuable opportunity to see my client “doing their thing”, something that I was happy to see validated much of what my client and I have discussed regarding hopes for change. By the end of the band’s first set, a crowd that started rather stagnant... Continue reading

A recent topic of conversation with some of my peers was personality tests and exploring how each of us approach certain situations differently. I find the capstone experience an interesting opportunity to build greater self-awareness and understanding, as well as learn how to adjust to others who are different. Nothing shocking – but nonetheless meaningful. For me, every step of this process will be an opportunity to better understand how my unique way of looking at things can be managed deliberately and constructively to be an asset in marketing projects. Overall, this week has been one of self-discovery – reminding... Continue reading

A Drag Queen, A Wedding, and a Killer Band During my initial client meeting it became clear to me that my client is dedicated to delivering a quality sound and a fun time through each of the band’s performances. I spent the meeting listening and asking questions to hone in on the most important courses of action for me to take over the next two months. The time flew by. And, by the end of our meeting my mind was swimming with various (and at times, conflicting) directions, challenges, and ideas. My client’s world is composed of diverse venues, clientele,... A requirement to wait invites an opportunity for reflection and self-evaluation. Kindled by anticipation for my capstone assignment, the days leading up to the “grand reveal” were full of such times. I could only imagine what was possibly coming my way for my final chapter as a master’s student here at The University of Cincinnati. However, I could not have guessed what was coming next. When my assignment was revealed I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I will be serving an entertainment group as a student consultant. Fueled by curiosity, the post-reveal era has been one full of investigation,... Continue reading
