My advice to future students: Understand the scope of the project from the beginning. Ask a bunch of questions, even if you think you've asked enough, ask more. Don't schedule any big or small life events, or plan on seeing your friends and family too often. Don't collapse inwardly when you realize after ten hours of writing that spell check won't find instances of your dyslexia using words that contain the same letters as the word you meant to use just in different arrangements (resources/recourses... I wonder what else I've hidden in there). To my previous point, find a good... Continue reading

Last week I had an unpleasant review with Drew. After taking in his feedback and reviewing the deck I'd showed him, I realized that I am still doing something that has plagued me both in school and in my career—I fail to put everything in my head down on paper in my first pass. Drew preaches that brevity is a virtue but in my case sometimes it is my weakness. I tend to partially express things, I question the relevance of pieces of information until I'm barely communicating my point. I also don't always work linearly. Sometimes that works, but... This weekend was my time to sit down and pull everything together that I have so far. I've gone through each of the analyses from my charter, some have been more fruitful than others. I was able to review and incorporate data from the main survey, though I'm still conducting some in-person interviews this week, so next weekend I'll go through and reevaluate with the full data set. I have waves of feeling good about where I am and then waves of panic that I haven't turned up anything insightful. I think I have the foundation for my recommendation but... Continue reading

Sorry I missed last week's post and this one is coming in late, I've been sort of losing track of what day it is. Even so its not like me to miss deadlines—I'll add a calendar reminder for these posts. I've been working on research, primary and secondary over the past two weeks. I've got a survey out to the target market and another one going out to a group that advises the target market. The response volume hasn't been as great as I was hoping, so I'm leaving it open a bit longer than I'd planned. Having the QCA... Continue reading

Sorry for the late post! The days/weeks are starting to blur and I completely lost track of the fact that yesterday was Monday. I'm maintaining a low level of anxiety over this project. I'm waiting on my client to release the mailing list to me to send out my primary research survey. I have a two other research deliverables (a secondary survey and in-depth interviews) but this one is going to be essential to me really being able to dig in to the analyses. I do hate this point in any project, where I feel I'm so far in but... Continue reading

I had a great meeting with my clients on Friday afternoon. We were able to work through narrowing down the goal for this project. The product they are developing will eventually be very robust, and will target many different markets, but for the purposes of capstone, we were able to limit it to one group, to give more clarity and focus to my research. With that change, I’ll be going through and reworking all of my analyses I’ve done so far. I think it will still be helpful to have gone through these once already, even though the target was... I had my first check-in with Drew today. It was really helpful to get fresh eyes on what I've been working on, especially because I'm starting to wander off track (whoops!). Even with my list of questions, highlighted capstone fieldbook, and knowing that the main thing I needed to get from the first meeting with my client was a clear goal, I didn't quite do that and now I'm in a nebulous zone. This isn't new to me, or unique to marketing. This is something I've experienced in my career, especially with new partnerships. For my part, I am very... Continue reading

This week went really quickly. I was in touch with my client over email—we had discussions about the first of three surveys that will be used to gauge target market needs. On Tuesday I will be attending QCA’s Entrepreneur Boot Camp, their annual seminar out of which the idea for this new product (Startup College) had developed. I’m going to be interviewing some attendees and asking them to fill out a survey. I’m also planning to have some informal conversations and observing this group as they are a sample set of our target audience. I will also be contacting some... Continue reading

Week Three I’ve finalized the charter with my client. I had a very productive meeting with Scott (the client) and Sally (the advisor). I think I’ve said this before but having Sally involved has been really helpful since she is familiar with the capstone project and has been very helpful as we define the scope of the project. I feel good about the outline and the deliverables we landed on. There were not many changes that came up in our meeting, a few things were more clearly defined, which is great. I also feel that there is flexibility with this... Continue reading

I’m currently in a nerve-wracking period where I am going through the field guide and assessing everything that needs to be done, but not quite checking anything off my list just yet. I’ve put together a draft of the charter with deliverables and a timeline and sent it over to my client for review. It’s been a few days and I haven’t heard anything back so that is also a little stressful—I know I can’t expect immediate responses but I do want to make sure we stay on track. I’m also nervous because the more time that passes the more... Continue reading

I’m really excited to get moving on this capstone project. On Friday I met with my client, Queen City Angel, and a colleague who has worked with capstone student consultants in previous semesters. It was very helpful having someone in the room who had exposure the capstone project—to raise some astute questions keep us on track and in scope. The conversation went well, we were able to cover a lot of ground as far as company background, the framework for the project and how we would work together over the next few months. I’m really pleased that I’ll be working... Continue reading
