We didn't use hard wood in this application. It's vinyl and it just looks like wood. I have had plenty of clients use wood in a basement. Especially high-end new construction. I don't suggest it but clients don't mind if they have to pull it up, even after being informed about the pros and cons. And they can control for moisture, with a new home, unless Sandy or some other big one hits... :)
Basement Remodel Underway
It's a basement and the starting point is rough. There are a lot of technical issues, beyond my area of expertise. What happens is the contractor tells you what you can do and you work from there. So he came with his subs. Then he brought the structural engineer. See all those poles? They hold...
Thanks Craig. I tell you, it was so weird....
By All Means, Come into my Office to Insult Me!
It's a beautiful fall day. The door is open. The sun is shining. A woman in her 70s pops her head into the door and asks, "Are you bored." I think to myself: this is an odd way to start a conversation. I look up from a desk full of paperwork, "Why do I look bored?" Her response, "Well it's just...

The wonder of the world is that there are so many choices. In real life these are graceful and elegant but certainly not everyone's cup of tea.
Hardware and Lighting: the Jewelery of a Home?
Hardware and lighting can really make a difference in a home's decor. Mostly, I see hardware and lighting as the elegant supporting actor. Otherwise your house looks like: "hi I am a light," everywhere you look. Of course there are times when calling attention to hardware and lighting are called...

AbbeyK's Summer of 2012
This summer was hot and dry with plenty of work. Like any summer, a few breaks here and there. Family visits, a few weekends away. Lots of gardening. Summer evening walks, my favorite. Perhaps the most important part: I got engaged, how delightful! And then Labor Day comes and it's like bam: Fa...

It's done. Just waiting on the furniture! That can take a long time.
This Renovation Is Not an Optical Illusion
The basement remodel is nearly complete. This is for my client whose house was featured on This Old House (R) a few years ago. Floors are in and cabinets installed. Before and current are attached. I promise you: it's the same space with similar camera angles! Bet you couldn't te...
They are Benjamin Moore historic or Americas colors. The gray reminds me of the color of tree bark. So soothing.
Bold Wall Colors for a Cambridge Greek Revivial
I love color! New clients recently purchased a Greek Revival just North of Harvard Square in Cambridge. It's a historic house, but their tastes run modern and bold and they are not afraid of color. How fun! With a 2-year-old and a move around the corner, they understandably wanted some work done...
Vornado sells Boston Design Center
Just read about this. The Boston Design Center changes hands. Changes in how business is done already happening in NY and LA. Wonder what this means for Boston? Rumors have been flying for some time now. Time will tell! Vornado... Continue reading

AbbeyK, You Should Know Better Than to Leave the House Looking Like That!
The line at Pete's in Lexington stretched all the way to the back of the store. This is not usual for an early Sunday morning. Nor is it typical for me to be out of the house in my gardening finest: rolled-up jean shorts, sandals, a big, white over shirt and a large rimmed hat. It's a look that ...
Great advice. My worry about the look is only half serious.

Terry, maybe you don't have to dress, but I don't need to look like a schlub, either? :)

This house has never flooded in over 100 years. We ran moisture checks, there is a whole house dehumidifier and we even checked dampness for the correct product to use to glue down the floor-- it's a vinyl.. No worries. This kind of job always starts with approximate measuring at the rough. This basement is just a playroom!
Think the Job of Decorator is Glamourous? Think Again.
The basement remodel continues. Those plans I drew for the permitting had to be re-measured based on site conditions so we could plan for plumbing, cabinetry, and the rest. This is one job where site conditions takes on a whole new meaning. To get the plumbing in, they had to take up the cement ...
Thanks everyone. Furniture is now ordered and the room should be finished soon. Bathroom already is!

Typically you run it straight, unless space is very formal and grand.
Stair Case Runner Options
A client recently decided to add a stair runner on the main stair. They just had a baby and some homeowners prefer a carpet on the stair if they have kids. One thing for sure, it helps with noise!!! So I inquired, what are you looking for? A pattern, a solid, diamonds? Something that looks like ...
Ok be right over!
