To keep my training strong throughout the 09-10 winter, I scheduled myself for an olympic distance triathlon on April 11. More than twice the length of my previous tri finish. In San Diego. With Navy SEAL type people. So with substantial money and pride invested, I proceeded to excuse away really digging into my training. But I showed up in San Diego excited if not completely ready to go. Let's get the ugly news out of the way upfront: 4:09:00 finish with splits of 50:01 for the 1500m swim, 8:29 in T1, 1:26:30 on the 40K Bike, 8:25 in T2,... Continue reading

A Google search for "beginner half-marathon training" returns 801,000 hits. I haven't done a rigorous statistical analysis, ut the gist of those pages is advising armchair athletes to spend 10 to 12 weeks running somewhere from 6 to 20+ plus miles a week, generally ending with some sort of period where you do less running for a few weeks before the race. To prepare for the Seattle 1/2, I ran four times in 19 days. This is stupid. To be fair, I had been doing a little bit of running, maybe 3-4 miles tops and some boot camp workouts to... I dominate Trivial Pursuit. Watching Jeopardy with me is unpleasant for most people. No problems in school. Standardized tests are a joke to me. But I am absolutely stupid. And have been for most of my life. When I was 6, I wanted to be a race car when I grew up. Since I haven't grown up, this dream remains unfulfilled. When I was 11, I decided against the easy merit badges during my first week at Scout Camp. Kids from the Bronx are wholly unprepared for Small Boat Sailing. I'm not sure how many times I took an aluminum... Continue reading

A little tough to type this one with a sprained wrist, which I did not sustain crashing my bike on ice. A mild 26 degrees in Seattle yesterday morning, could there be better weather for bike riding? I insisted on meeting my friend Jessica for a breakfast ride. I did not take the less steep, zero curve route down to the trail. Even after seeing all the frost outside. And knowing it was below freezing. And obviously too early for the barely-visible sun to do much about either. No, I had to ride my warm-up hills. Did I bail when... Continue reading

Adventures in Stupid, the idea: An entertaining read on a formerly supersized but still plenty plump guy dragging his fat ass through physical challenges aimed at more fit people. The stupid was to lie in the nature of the events themselves. Working out and training are smart. Pushing yourself is also smart. But there’s a hazy line where the utility of extra effort is limited by diminishing returns. Past that line, further effort creates a mountain of moronic. The first marathon was some Greek soldier hauling ass for 26 miles, saying his piece, then dropping dead. Marathons are stupid. A... Continue reading
