All of these questions are variations on "Why did Yahoo! spend one-third of their cash on hand to buy a company that by all accounts is about to run out of money?" Read this post, and hopefully these questions will... Continue »

Had Aila's check-up yesterday, and she is a growing 10 lb healthy gal. No longer the newborn with a round belly and skinny legs, she's got cute rolls developing and a nice double chin. Round cheeks too. She is smiling more at us, and cooing. Cute to watch her begin to communicate. I am thoroughly enjoying her every movement. She still prefers to be cuddled so I walk around with her snuggled up in the moby around me. She sleeps in our bed...while Dav sleeps on the sofa to catch quality zzzzzs...and I relish my snuggle time with her, wrapping... Continue »

Yeah, you heard me right: I'm a coder who has zero desire to ever step foot in events known as "Hackathons". Jeffrey To's article has reminded me that some developers find it puzzling that female developers aren't going to these... Continue »

As a last update before our annual holiday card gets posted, finally, I am ready to share that we're expecting Tesla's little sister in May!!! We are thrilled to bits. I am already almost 5 months, and would have shared earlier, but had some reasons. One was I had a miscarriage earlier. I actually had an "empty sac" before that, meaning my body thought I was pregnant, but there was no fetus (did you know this happens 25% of the time?!) It was mighty deceiving, as I felt pregnant immediately. That passed quickly, and I was actually rather ok with... Continue »

I remember telling my mother that I had a "corazonada" (a hunch) that the baby would come early. She was happy to hear this, and I was so sure that my instincts were on target that I started to wrap... Continue »

In an interesting juxtaposition of timing, two months before my 25th wedding anniversary one of my dearest friends got married. Not only did it give me a chance to see and remember what it's like to be full of hope, so heartbreakingly sweet and also slightly naive, but it gave... Continue »

In order to show my appreciation for my sister, I have to start somewhere around 1985. That was the year I got married, she was my maid of honor and we officially reconciled. Before that, we spent a lot of time not talking and not getting along. Truth be told,... Continue »

Compliments to our chefs. At midnight, Gourmet Live went live in the app store. We all stayed up staring at our screens until the familiar “G” icon came up in iTunes. We smiled and watched the first downloads and the... Continue »

This is one of my favorite fast dinners; the most time-consuming part is pulling the skin off the chicken legs, and you can do that in about a minute. The yogurt tenderizes the meat, making it incredibly silky, and the spices penetrate it, making it sing with flavor. The high-heat of the oven gives it a few charred spots, which... Continue »

I had a Tsingtao with lunch. It reminds me a bit of being in France: The first meal right after I get there, you might have just been able to share a whole bottle of wine with your wife, and... Continue »

I don't remember exactly how I came across A Modern Eden, but they have the most stylish kids apps you have ever seen. I am so serious people. And they also make flash cards, totes and prints, which are all handy when you have a little one around. Very good... Continue »

So last night, I was on the hunt for a TV. I found one on Craig's List that looked promising and after a few emails, I told the guy I'd be on my way over to check it out. He lives in the Haight, which is a short drive over from where I live in the Mission. I don't have a car though, so I started heading over there on my scooter. Knowing that despite my incredible ability to move large objects on my scooter (I once moved everything in my apartment to a new place using only a '79... Continue »

Tesla is 4 years old! She had a list of celebrations for her birthday beginning with a special lunch/cake celebration at her preschool. Her teacher made her the most awesome hat complete with tinker bell and lots of detailed decorations. Every month, the school does a combined special lunch for the birthday kids, and because Tesla started in September, she had to wait all year long to have her turn. She was SO proud. Here she is sharing with Sean. In honor of T's day, we donated a book to the school. T got to sign it : ) Then... Continue »

Now, here's a timely recipe to try out my One Pie Dough to Rule Them All recipe I gave you last night. Try it before the fleeting cherry season is over. Do try, even if you're one of those who couldn't stand the generic, gloopy cherry pie - I'm looking at you Matt. Because this recipe, this ain't your usual, generic cherry pie. It might even be the best cherry pie you'll ever tasted. You try it and tell me. The secret to this pie is the spices. When I was tinkering with my cherry pie recipe, I thought adding some spices to it would be fun. So I went to my spice rack and found a blend that I made for my French spiced bread, Pain d'Epices. It's got the usual cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove, but also with a generous amount of ginger powder, giving it an interesting, unusual character. It turned out beautifully in the first cherry pie I baked for the season. Now I won't ever bake my cherry pie without it again. Spiced Cherry Pie 1 recipe One Pie Dough to Rule Them All (Or use your favorite pie dough, even a store-bought one if you... Continue »
