Re: [Baby Bargains Book Blog] esme submitted a comment to Confusion, chaos reigns as crib makers race to meet June 28 deadline
Well, your crib will meet CURRENT safety standards. But the new enhanced rules take effect June 28, so it is unclear if something shipping TODAY would meet those rules. Most likely yes, but you can ask Target.
Confusion, chaos reigns as crib makers race to meet June 28 deadline
June 28th---that's the day the Consumer Products Safety Commission has set as the deadline for the baby gear biz to meet its new safety standards for cribs. That means any crib sold after June 28th must meet the new standards . . . and that close deadline has set off a near panic among retai...

New look! Same great bargains! The brand new 9th edition of BABY BARGAINS will be released in April and we're darn excited. The new book is updated and expanded. Here's a quick look at what's new: 1. How to use social media, "groupons," and deal-of-the-day sites for baby bargains. 2. The latest...
Re: [Baby Bargains Book Blog] Jill J submitted a comment to RECALL: Strollers Recalled to Repair by philteds USA Due to Amputation and Laceration Hazards
Hi Jill: Thanks for reading our book, BABY BARGAINS! Glad you found it helpful.
Bad news there: since Ragazzi is out of business, there are no kits available to make those crib rails static. As far as I know, there is no way of making a crib rail non-movable on your own.
You are correct that the Ragazzi cribs were not subject to the most recent round of recalls. However, both the US and Canada are forbidding the resale of ALL drop-side cribs.
Wish we had better news,

Re: [Baby Bargains Book Blog] Meghan submitted a comment to Government bans drop-side cribs
Meghan,
Thanks for your post. Yes, we are updating our book for a new edition coming out in April and well be revising information in Shopping Tips section of the book where drop sides are mentioned. The good news: our recommendations in the 8th edition of Baby Bargains remain the same. For example, the Graco Lauren or Graco Sarah which are recommended as Good options (see page 93) are available now as static side cribs. And the same brands that we recommend in our book no longer sell drop side cribs but you the rating of their static side cribs will still be the same as their drop sides.
Hope that helps,
Alan and Denise Fields
Government bans drop-side cribs
As was widely anticipated, the Consumer Product Safety Commission today voted to ban the sale of drop-side cribs. According to the Associated Press, the government took the move "after the deaths of more than 30 infants and toddlers in the past decade and millions of recalls." This means that...

And the award for biggest lie on a stroller's weight goes to . . .
We're busy working on a new edition of BABY BARGAINS right now---it will be out next spring. For this book, we have a new secret weapon: a portable scale. (And you thought only the folks in white lab coats at Consumer Reports got to play with such toys). Our mission: find out the TRUE weights...
Re: [Baby Bargains Book Blog] Marian Morton submitted a comment to Bonavita crib drawer has mold problem
I hear your frustration Marian---good points. We will warn folks in our next book that if you buy a convertible crib, you should always order the conversion kit at the same time. It is true: crib styles are discontinued and replaced all the time, that is the nature of the nursery business. In Bonavitas defense, however, we should point out that all major crib makers basically do the same thing. Once they discontinue a crib style, the conversion kit may be difficult if not impossible to buy later.

Bonavita crib drawer has mold problem
Reader Kate E. writes in today with this disturbing story: We ordered a Bonavita Hudson crib on January 1st 2008 and the baby furniture store people said it would take 12 weeks maximum, but not to worry because that was the latest estimate possible. So regardless of that, the crib ended up ta...

Re: [Baby Bargains Book Blog] ckj submitted a comment to Drop-side cribs to be banned by end of 2010
Just to clarify: the government has not recalled ALL drop-side cribs (although they have recalled quite a few). The government is banning the sale of NEW drop-side cribs. I would make sure your crib has not been recalled. If not, I would suggest contacting the store you purchased it from and asking if they have a trade-in program.
Drop-side cribs to be banned by end of 2010
The CPSC approved a ban today on the sale of drop-side cribs in a 5-0 vote. The new standards would prohibit the sale of drop-side cribs in stores and their use in daycare centers and hotels. The rules would likely take effect later in 2010, says an AP article on the move. The move comes amid a...

Re: [Baby Bargains Book Blog] Kelley submitted a comment to Reader: KozyPal shopping cart cover maker took money, never shipped product
I would agree Kelly. First, the company should have put a notice on its web site about delayed shipments. THEN, they should stop taking new orders or charging consumers credit cards until they resolve the backlog. And if you want still take orders, you have to return folk emails!

Re: [Baby Bargains Book Blog] Meredith submitted a comment to RECALL: Infant Suffocation Deaths Prompt Recall of Amby Baby Motion Beds/Hammocks
Hi Meredith: Thanks for reading our book, BABY BARGAINS. We agree: this is troubling and frustrating. We recommended the Amby after noting glowing reader reviews of the product, plus it received JPMA safety certification and endorsements of pediatricians like Dr. Bob Sears. We also examined the product in person and did not see any safety issue that are now obvious in retrospect.
It is our goal to only recommend the safest and best quality baby gear. Do we make mistakes? Yes, we do. We try to learn from these situations, make fixes and hope to prevent this in the future. One obvious correction: we will no longer put any stock in JPMA certification that a product meets minimum safety standards.
Meanwhile, we urge all readers to stop using the Amby until they receive the repair kit.

Re: [Baby Bargains Book Blog] Marie submitted a comment to Babys Nightmare? Crib maker, green group in spat over formaldehyde
Hi Marie: Thanks for reading our book and blog. Well, we have expanded our coverage of green tech like organic mattresses over the last couple of years.
Yes, we are skeptical of product claims---but not just green products. When a baby product makes a health claim---green or not---we expect to see some science to back that up. Too often what we see in the baby business is green washing. Or unfounded claims (such as conventional mattresses cause SIDS) clearly made to scare parents and sell organic alternatives.
So if we have any bias, it is for proof and accuracy, not hype and scare tactics!
Thanks again,
Alan Denise
