I quit Facebook a while back, after having enjoyed being FB friends with a bunch of people with whom I like being connected. I left because Facebook's price of "friendship" was too high for me. What Facebook wanted – what... Continue reading

aside from the obvious fact that corporate politics remain corporate politics regardless of race or rhetoric, is that when you compromise too much in an effort to be reasonable, a smart and cynical adversary will use it against you. As... Continue reading

The first presidential debate two Wednesdays ago provided yet another reminder of the painfully conflict-averse nature of this president. It drives some progressives crazy that, even within the confines of corporatocracy, Obama could inspire outrage against the brown-shirt Romney-Ryan rabble... Continue reading

says it all: "These politicians just don't realize how important that one $240 check is." – Frank Ballesteros, 62, whose unemployment benefits will run out next week because Arizona legislators declined an extension with federal money. Bottom line: wealthy, corporate-fed... Continue reading

The study, by Dutch researchers Diederik A. Stapel and Siegwart Lindenberg, appeared in the April 8 issue of the journal Science. It found, in field and laboratory experiments, that people were more prone to stereotype and discriminate against others in... Continue reading

Mike: The salient fact here is more basic than you admit: The large-scale repercussions of a worst-case scenario nuclear plant disaster are far worse than those for a coal, oil or gas plant. I am no fan of these, either, since their incremental planetary impact is worse than that of a well-functioning nuclear plant. The problem I cited is with an accident. If you think nuclear power is worth that risk, God bless you. I don't. Ultimately, the solution is breaking the current coal/oil/gas/nuclear monopoly with safer and sustainable energy sources.

Angela: So you believe that mundane or profound differences in everyday treatment, in intra- vs. inter-racial conversation, and in where one feels most culturally comfortable "don't happen." A slew of white, brown and black people I know tell me otherwise. Someone is mistaken here, and the odds tell me it's you. Don't assume, either, that guys are the only gender who look at the opposite (or the same) gender's butts. That's why I deliberately didn't use a gender pronoun there.
Good point, Mushim. Maybe better to have said, "the underlying calendar for all 12 months." White history awareness, after all, doesn't need a special month.

Thank you, Mushim. I'll try for a healthier dinner on Sunday, but just as tasty. I wish you the same.
