The Culver City City Council announced the selection of Combined Properties to oversee the design and aesthetic of the 1-acre plot in the heart of downtown Culver City known as Parcel B. Ehrlich Architects of Culver City will be engaged as the architectural firm responsible for the design and aesthetic of the project. Overall, this looks like a nice concept. Quoting Culver City Architect, Tim Petersen of TPA, "Looks like we have a winning scheme for downtown Culver City. I think they at least chose the right architect (Ehrlich), who should be thoughtful in developing the project (if allowed to).... Continue reading

VIA No, it's not LA, but too damn beautiful not to talk about. Iconic architect Frank Gehry’s groundbreaking project is finally complete. Although other residential buildings across the ocean dwarf Gehry’s, New York still retains the distinction of a functional landmark designed by one of the world’s greatest living architects. A staggering amount of detail went... Continue reading

This exhibition, organized by Hammer chief curator Douglas Fogle, brings together two great visionaries of art and language - Ed Ruscha and Jack Kerouac. Both men revolutionized the transparent use of words to document and comment on the shifting character of the American cultural landscape. In 1951, Kerouac wrote On the Road on his typewriter as a continuous 120 foot-long scroll, feverishly recording in twenty days his experiences during road trips in the U.S. and Mexico in the late 1940s. With its publication in 1957, Kerouac was acknowledged as the leading voice of the Beat Generation, a group of writers... Continue reading

This is the most absurd, obnoxious thing I've heard! VIA The 57,000-square foot Los Angeles mansion built by the late TV producer Aaron Spelling is slated for sale to a 22-year-old heiress to a Formula One racing fortune. The home on five acres of property in Holmby Hills has a bowling alley, beauty salon, several gift-wrapping rooms and parking for 100 cars. "The Manor," as the property is known, had a list price of $150 million that didn't budge during the real-estate downturn that sent prices in Los Angeles down by more than a third. The sales price was not... Continue reading

"The Eu/phoria chairs are shells supported by a slender frame. They are part chair and part armchair. They can be adorned with intense colours, in lively Vichy checks or country stripes, in more sober houndstooth, or in supple Alcantara. Changing the fabric changes their appearance completely. They have an industrial spirit and feminine grace, and they are eco-friendly, because the manufacture of the shell uses material left over from woodworking. They are chameleons that can adapt to any surroundings. In the all-black version, they are perfect in any office, they look great in a bar when covered with Chinese material,... Continue reading

Agricultural fields south-west of Perdizes, Brazil, photographed from the international space station. A mix of regularly gridded polygonal fields and circular centre-pivot fields mark the human land use of the region. Small tributary streams (and their adjacent floodplains) of the Araguari river extend throughout the agricultural landscape. The visual diversity of field forms is matched by the variety of crops produced here: sunflowers, wheat, potatoes, coffee, rice, soybeans and corn. The Orange River serves as part of the border between Namibia and South Africa. Along the banks of this river, roughly 100km (60 miles) inland from where the river empties... Continue reading
