So, another ugly win produced another stunning three points. If only pretty things were successful, then Donald Trump would never have achieved anything! Within minutes of the Rapids' 2-0 win at Columbus Crew, the following stats appeared online to highlight the recent run of form. First 5 games = 2... Continue reading

As a sporting occasion, the Rapids' win over Toronto wasn't a great spectacle, but it's a win Not every team which graces the grass at Dick's Sporting Goods Park will leave the keys to the safe in full view. Some will turn up with their most prized possession fiercely guarded... Continue reading

Some questions tougher than others as Denver enters off-season It’s been a very difficult week in Nuggets Nation. Difficult for the coaches, players, staff, fans – and yes the announcers! I’ve been tired, depressed and surly. I haven’t shaved since the Mile High Crew lost Game 6 in Oakland and surrendered their first-round playoff series 4-2. As an aside, I shaved a few hours before Game 6 and cut my chin badly – perhaps foreshadowing what was to come. So, what have I been doing since the season ended? Answering questions about your Denver Nuggets. At the gym, gas station,... Continue reading

It takes 16 victories in the playoffs to win the NBA Championship. For the Denver Nuggets, one down 15 more to go. Saturday’s victory over the Golden State Warriors was the Nuggets’ first in a playoff series opener since 2010 – and it was sweet. The Mile High Crew beat a good Golden State team, despite playing without two of its best players, Danilo Gallinari and Kenneth Faried. Not many teams in the NBA could have accomplished that. Of course, not many teams have a player like Andre Miller, who scored 28 points – 18 in the fourth quarter –... Continue reading

Mapping out the path for Denver to reach the NBA Finals The Denver Nuggets can win the West. There, I said it. You heard it, and that’s all there is to it. Even with forward Danilo Gallinari out for the season, opportunity knocks for the Mile High Crew. How? Let’s examine some playoff scenarios for the hometown team. Say the Nuggets finish as the No. 3 seed in the West and matchup with the No. 6 Golden State Warriors. Denver would have home court – the best home-court advantage in the NBA. Plus, they have confidence playing the Warriors, as... Continue reading

Before I get into Missy’s latest venture, I just thought I would remind you that we are just a month and a half away from saying farewell to one of our favorites here in Colorado. Missy will graduate from Regis Jesuit High School on May 20th. She’ll always be ours, but soon she’s headed off to the big wide world of college at Cal. Do you remember your final days of high school? That was a long, long, time ago for me, but I do seem to remember this magical excitement in the air. What I don’t remember is really... Voting for NBA Coach of the Year is a tricky proposition. Is it the coach of the team with the best record? Is it the coach of the team with the biggest improvement from last season to this season? I say it’s the coach that does the most with the talent he has available. That’s why George Karl should be named NBA Coach of the Year. First, let’s look at the accomplishments of the Denver Nuggets at this point in the season. The Mile High Crew is 45-22, 23 games over 500. This is one of it’s best records in... Continue reading

I canʼt wait until Wednesday night! The Nuggets are hosting the New York Knicks, with more story lines than room on the book shelf. Itʼs gong to be an electric atmosphere at Pepsi Center for so many reasons! First, letʼs start with the obvious. Yep, this is Carmelo Anthonyʼs first trip back to Denver since “the trade” in February 2011. A couple of years ago, maybe Nugget fans would relish his return by booing him every time he touches the ball. I ask the question: Why? Everyone seemed to get what they wanted in the trade. Carmelo headlines a storied... Continue reading

Your browser does not support iframes. We’ve all been waiting for Ty Lawson to step up and go to the next level. In my opinion he has done that. Right now – at this very moment – I believe that Ty is one of the top five point guards in the NBA. Here is my top-five list – as of March 2013: Chris Paul, Tony Parker, Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry and Ty Lawson. Forget about Rajon Rondo, Derrick Rose, Deron Williams, Jason Kidd and Steve Nash. They are either out of commission or on the other side of midnight. Let’s... Continue reading

Well, after winning eight straight games and 14 of 16, the resurgent Denver Nuggets head out on the road for a tricky four-game trip. They will play four games in five nights against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets. How will the Nuggets do on this trip? Here’s my Marlowe rundown on the opponents the Mile High Crew will face. First up, the 14-34 Cavaliers. Sounds like an easy win doesn’t it? Well, think again! Yes, the Cavs have the third-worst record in the NBA. Yes, the Nuggets have already beaten them once at Pepsi Center,... Continue reading

I said this Tuesday night in the Post Game show when the Avalanche beat the LA Kings 3-1 at Pepsi Center, chemistry will outweigh talent the majority of the time. I am certainly not suggesting any lack of talent on the side of the burgundy and blue, but what I am saying is that a strong bond on any given line, is stronger than the best hands or most creative player on the other line. Matt Duchene centers a line with Captain Gabriel Landeskog and P.A. Parenteau. The top line will always go toe to toe with the opponents top... Continue reading

It doesn’t get any better than beating the Lakers at Staples Center in L.A. Yes, I know there are a number of other teams in the league that you love to beat, especially on the road. Winning at Utah, at San Antonio, at New York, all very desirable. But in my opinion, winning in L.A. is the ultimate. Part of it is the Lakers storied history….16 NBA Championships. Part of it is the Lakers star-studded lineup. Then throw in actor Jack Nicholson and all the celebs, and you have the makings of the ultimate road win! By the way, in... Continue reading

I was laying sideways on the couch next to the fireplace, sipping a glass of red wine late Friday night when my younger brother Casey came up with the ultimate vacation idea. Now, let me preface this first by saying, like any good vacation, you must be willing to fork over a little dough. This is not a weekend at Bernie’s, or a 24-hour slop-fest in Vegas. This is the real deal. But, I will offer two different versions in hopes that the bait will be attractive enough to get the most frugal of fish, as well as the man-eaters.... Continue reading

It’s not fun to watch the news anymore. Seriously, I find myself not blinking, mouth wide open, absolutely shocked with what’s going on in the world. The first fifteen minutes of every newscast is brutal. Fiscal cliffs, murder-suicides, the crisis in the middle east, lockouts, massive storms, and heartbreaking stories about abducted children. It makes it difficult for me to lay my head on the pillow, close my eyes, and fall asleep with all of these horrific things happening around us. So what are we to do? How do we change this world? Let’s be honest, we can’t change the... Continue reading

I guess former Nuggets Coach Doug Moe was right— most of the time free throw shooting decides the outcome of close NBA games. Monday night in Salt Lake City, Utah the Denver Nuggets lost a game, 105-103, to the Utah Jazz because of very unfortunate free throw shooting. The Mile High Crew missed 14 free throws making just 18-32 for 56.3%. Meanwhile, Tuesday night in Los Angeles, the Lakers lost at home 79-77 to the Indiana Pacers. In that game the vaunted Lakers missed a whopping 20 free throws, making just 23-43 for 53.5%. Interestingly, the Nuggets and Lakers meet... Continue reading

With 17 of their first 23 games on the road, I am not surprised that the Denver Nuggets record is just 4-4. During this stretch, with multiple games and crisscrossing one-night roadies, there were going to be bumps in the road. One of the bumps hit Monday night when the Nuggets were beaten in Phoenix by a sub 500 Suns team. The conditions were right for an upset—Nuggets were playing their 5th game in 7 nights. They were coming off a euphoric, exhausting, double overtime win at Golden State. Meanwhile the Suns, had just suffered their worst loss of the... Continue reading

“Not a creature was stirring not even a mouse.” Clement Clarke Moore The plane ride home from Miami to Denver was as quiet as I’ve ever seen it. No loud music, no big laughs, no jokes, no storytelling. Players, coaches, staff, and assorted media types were all subdued after a 0-3-road trip to start the season. To make matters worse, the Nuggets lost a road trip ending heartbreaker to the NBA Champion Heat. In my mind, there are two categories of close losses: Games you COULD have won but didn’t really deserve to. And games you SHOULD have won but... Continue reading

Did you see what I just saw? Up 24 points, laughing, high-fiving security guards, raising his arms in triumph. Not So Fast PHIL! Remember who is on the other side of the field. In the first half, yeah, you kicked our butts. Gloat all you want in the locker room at halftime, but don’t forget about the eye in the sky, the 20 million people also watching the football game. Who’s laughing now? As the new host of The All Sports Summit, I want to bring the fan perspective into the sports we care about. I know what you were... Continue reading

Andre Iguodala…new Denver Nuggets’ uniforms…and Missy Franklin all have one thing in common…gold! Nuggets newcomer Andre Iguodala won a gold medal at the recently concluded 2012 London Olympic Games. If you haven’t seen him play—get ready to watch the best 2-way player to hit the Rockies since Bobby Jones! Yes, Bobby Jones. For those of you that don’t remember, Bobby played offense AND defense in the same game! What a novel idea. Jones was a big star in Denver in the mid 70’s, later with the Philadelphia 76ers, and finished his career as an 8-time All Star, and an NBA... Continue reading

The 2012 Olympic games in London are over. And boy am I tired. I announced 53 beach volleyball matches in 13 days—sometimes doing as many as 6 a day. The stories at the volleyball venue, Horse Guards Parade, were memorable. Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings won their 3rd consecutive Gold Medal and established themselves as the greatest beach team of all time. During their journey, in a quarterfinal, Misty and Kerri met Italy. One of the Italians, 21-year-old Marta Menegatti, had said that Misty May had always been her idol. Before the match, our reporter Heather Cox got... Continue reading

Seriously. Did you? One day at my favorite little watering hole, a place called Extra Innings, I sat next to my friend Joey Chambers. We were talking about the Olympics, golf rounds and sipping on our beers when Joey paused and said without hesitating, “You know Kyle, my mom once told me, Joey, if you don’t do anything all day, just make your bed. That way, you can say, I did something today.” I cackled out loud from the sure randomness of the outburst, but it got me thinking as we continued to chat…Did I make my bed today? The... +LONDON 2012 – Maya Starks Hands down the Summer Olympics is my absolute favorite sporting event. With a few exceptions (equestrian, rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline) I find myself completely absorbed in the competition. Blood, sweat, tears… the Games has it all. It’s one of the only major sporting events where you can’t say, “Maybe next year.” It comes down to one chance and if you blow it you have to wait four long years. Hopefully, you’re young enough to make it next time around. So before I give my Olympic highlight thus far let me send a huge glass of... Continue reading

So I bought my first magazine for Fantasy Football on the 4th of July weekend. Might as well throw that thing away. Since then, there have been about 8 different convictions, suspensions and blown knees. All that studying and reading up on my sleeper picks can be flushed straight down the toilet. So much has changed already and we just only started Training Camp 2012. You can sit on any bar stool in America and argue that Aaron Rogers should go before Arian Foster. Or maybe your cup of tea is a little slice of “Rice” from Baltimore. Whoever you... Continue reading
